Heart Radio’s Charlie O’Brien on pregnancy, proposals & little treats

Charlie O’Brien is a radio presenter for Heart and gets up at 3.45am to host a breakfast show. She is also a lifestyle and popular culture blogger and runs her own blog realgirlramblings.com. Charlie is expecting her first baby with fiancé – radio and TV presenter Jk (Jason King) who also works for Heart. They live in South East London with their very lazy lab, Isla.

I’m discovering that looking good in pregnancy DOESN’T necessarily come easily. I had ridiculous, misguided illusions of being all glowing-looking for 9 months with thick glossy hair and a cute little bump that would just magically appear at 12 weeks. A bit like the lady on my pregnancy vitamins packet?! Wrong! From being a small size 8, I felt bloated and lumpy literally from Day 1. I’ve also been ridiculously tired, a big part of which I put down to getting up before 4am five days a week to host a radio show. Under-eye concealer has become my best friend. I did also have a tricky start to my pregnancy and had to be on a lot of medication, which added to the general feelings of grottiness.

Add to that the bizarre changes in my skin (adult acne anyone?) and the tough time finding things to wear, and I am probably the complete antithesis of the romantic preconception I had about pregnancy!

Charlie O'Brien in Seraphine

So at 21 weeks I’ve decided to take the bull by the horns and do something about it. I’ve booked in for a facial this week and next weekend I’m off for a delicious spa break with the girls. I was also quite literally over the moon to stumble across Seraphine whilst googling ‘nice maternity clothes’! I’m so excited to try some of the dresses, so I don’t have to be in the same one pair of maternity jeans for the next 4 months! When you work on the radio, you can literally wear your pyjamas to work if you want, it’s not very glam. But I think every woman wants to look her best from time to time, especially during this very magical, but sometimes tough time.

Life has actually been a bit of a rollercoaster recently because as well as expecting our first child together, my partner Jk also proposed to me last week! We were on a cliff top in Cornwall so I was wearing trainers and a hoodie at the time! But we’re going to go for some posh cocktails (non alcoholic for me of course) at the hotel where we had our first date, so I’m looking forward to dressing up for the first time in ages and feeling good about the way I look. Although I expect we’ll be home by 10pm in front of the TV with a hot chocolate …

I do think us ladies have a tendency to neglect our own needs a bit in pregnancy. We’re so focused on making sure baby has the right vitamins, we’re eating the right foods, and doing everything by the book that we forget about ourselves. So if you’re feeling the same as me – do something lovely for yourself. Book a manicure, order a pretty maternity dress or just have a bubble bath. After all, we might not have much spare time in a few months!

Charlotte Hawkins Starts the Week in Style in a Stunning Seraphine Dress

Did you spot the Seraphine dress on Good Morning Britain this week? The gorgeous Charlotte Hawkins started the week in style on Monday morning, presenting the ITV breakfast show in our Claret Red Knot Front Maternity Dress!

The dress suited her perfectly, and the sassy red shade looked stunning next to her peachy complexion and blonde hair. She styled it simply with a single gold bangle and a classic pair of shoes for a polished professional look with a soft feminine vibe.

The dress itself is the winter incarnation of one of our all time best selling styles, which is already a huge hit among the ladies of TV land. Both This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby and media personality Claire Sweeney loved the Blue Knot Front Maternity Dress this summer, and Charlotte’s red dress has appeared on US entertainment show Access Hollywood, so she is certainly in good company when it comes to her maternity fashion choices!

Designed to flatter the curves at every stage of pregnancy and beyond; the knotted detailing at the empire line draws the eye to the slimmest part of the body, and creates flattering gathers of fabric which drape beautifully over a growing bump. We are sure that Charlotte, who is expecting her first child with husband Mark in February next year, will get plenty of wear out of this ultra versatile little red dress over the party season.

When it comes to style, Charlotte seems to have taken pregnancy in her stride so far. With all the glamorous layering and accessorising, winter is an exciting time to be expecting, and we can’t wait to see how she develops her look to suit her changing curves over the coming months.

A Royal Trend Setter – Meet our Most Coveted Maternity Evening Gown

Have you ever had a dress so  gorgeous that everyone wants to know where you got it? One that turns heads and attracts compliments everywhere you go? Well royal equestrian star Zara Phillips and Sky Sports Formula 1 presenter Natalie Pinkham have, and know all too well the power of a dazzling maternity evening gown!

Some of you may remember that around about this time last year, Zara – expecting baby Mia Grace at the time – looked stunning in our Colour Block Silk Maxi Gown at the Boodles Boxing Ball. What you may not remember however is that at the event, she was pictured looking lovely with her close friend Natalie.

Zara Phillips in Seraphine

And apparently Zara’s dress made a big impression on her friend, as last week, over a year later; Natalie was spotted wearing the very same Seraphine style!

Natalie wore the stunning blue maternity evening gown from the Seraphine Luxe Collection to a charity dinner held at Kensington Palace for children’s health charity Sparks, and looked utterly gorgeous.

Natalie Pinkham in a Seraphine Luxe Gown

It’s easy to see why stylish mums-to-be can’t get enough of this beautiful maternity evening gown. It is made in luxurious stretch silk and inspired by traditional oriental design, with origami pleats at the front and short kimono style sleeves. The striking colour block style in ultra marine and azure blue flatters every skin tone, and the silk sash ties can be secured at the front or back to highlight the empire waist line, making the most of your blossoming pregnancy curves.

They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, so we’re sure these lovely ladies wouldn’t mind us taking a little style inspiration from their looks – after all, a gown this gorgeous is simply too good not to share!

Being able to offer a fashionable looking shoe that has real health benefits is very exciting, and I hope you will enjoy wearing them as much as I enjoyed developing this new venture. The creation of ShoeTherapy meant a lot for me, as I myself have experienced the discomfort of back ache so I know how incapacitating it can be.

Autumn Makeover: Master the hottest seasonal makeup trends

The days are getting shorter, and the ankle boots are quickly replacing those summery sandles – there’s no denying it now: we are in autumn! And with the changing seasons comes a whole host of new beauty trends to explore and experiment with. Pregnancy is the perfect time to get creative with your makeup, so check out our list of key styles for this season, and see which looks take your fancy!

Precious Metallics

metallic makeup trend

From Rodarte’s high shine bronzed lips to Donna Karan’s sultry silver eye shadow, the models strutting down the AW14 catwalks were bedazzled with sparkling metallics. This season try vamping up the classic smokey eyes look with a dusting of shimmering gold or silver eye shadow. Work this look with a chic black outfit, and match your jewellery with your metallic makeup!

Wear it with:

Charcoal Woven Back Nursing Jumper
Tailored Black Cropped Maternity Trousers

Crazy Colour

Colourful makeup trend

Don’t wave goodbye to your bright summer shades just yet; vibrant neon colours applied in bold painterly strokes are set to take the colder seasons by storm this year! Dior’s sparkling blue eye shadow was a sight to be seen on the runway, and Chanel’s sweeping eyeliner styles in neon pink, teal and lime green stole the show. Dare to be different this autumn and accent your eyes with strong sweeping colours!

Wear it with:

Evergreen & Navy Nursing Wrap Dress

Retro 60’s Style

Retro makeup trends

Every new season draws inspiration from fashion decades gone by, and this autumn is all about the swinging 60’s! The wide-eyed lash-tastic looks at Versace, Rochas and Gucci were created by building up the model’s lashes with multiple coats of mascara and several sets of falsies. Rock a 60’s inspired look this season with doll-like long lashes, a bold liquid eyeliner flick and a striped maternity tunic!

Wear it with:

Blue & Black Striped Cowl Neck Tunic
Faux Leather Detail Maternity Treggings

Off Duty Ballerina

Soft pink makeup trend

Inspired by the Ballet Russe; the hair at Diane von Furstenberg was tied back in classic ballet buns, and the soft makeup in pastel shades of lilac, pink and nude created an ultra feminine look. This style is perfect for softening an androgynous trouser suit at the office, and will look fantastic paired with those iconic pink coats (which by the way, are stylish as ever this season!)

Wear it with:

Blush Pink Wool & Cashmere Luxe Maternity Coat
Tailored White Cropped Maternity Trousers

Winter Style, All Wrapped Up: Choosing Your Maternity Coat

Winter is coming! It may be a little way off just yet, but right now is the perfect time to start thinking about one of the most exciting fashion decisions you’ll make this season – Choosing your winter maternity coat! Your coat will define your winter style more than any other piece in your wardrobe this season: It will be the final flourish to your outfit, and the first impression you make – so make sure you choose wisely! Check out our top 5 tips and discover the perfect winter maternity coat for you.

1)      The Neckline

Maternity coats

Look out for styles with detailing around the neckline or shoulders – this will balance out your pregnancy curves and draw attention up towards your face. A wide collar or feminine draped neckline is perfect, so our Black Wool & Cashmere Maternity Coat with its feminine draped collar is a great choice. But if you’re broad in the shoulders, be careful to keep the detailing neat and minimal.

2)      The Fastening

Seraphine maternity coats - parka

When it comes to keeping you and your bump cosy, finding a coat that closes over your curves is a must! Wrap coats with self-tie belts work wonders, but why not go one better and invest in a double zipped style like Our Khaki Maternity Parka. You can adapt the fit for before, during and after pregnancy.

3)      The Fabric

Seraphine maternity coats black and grey coat

The trick to creating a streamlined silhouette is to choose a coat with just the right drape. Our woolen coats are softer than ever this season, made in a premium blend of  Italian lamb’s wool and cashmere, with a silky inner lining – the ultimate winter luxury!

4)      The Length

Seraphine maternity coats long line coat

In the length department it’s all about what suits your shape. A ¾ length coat like our Wool & Cashmere Two Tone Maternity Coat will cover your hips and thighs, and is perfect for showing off long legs. If you’re more petite, long coats may tend to swamp you, so opt for a slightly shorter style – mid thigh is perfect!

5)      The Style

Seraphine maternity coats - puffer jacket

When it comes to style – the world is your oyster! A girl will never go wrong with a classic woollen coat, but there are plenty of other options out there. You could work a continental après ski vibe with our brand new Maternity Puffer Jacket, or try urban utility chic with our Khaki Maternity Parka – anything goes!

Happy shopping mamas!

Team Seraphine Smashes Fundraising Targets in Aid of Care International

We couldn’t be prouder of our Seraphine team members who took on the Prima Solutions Adventure Charity Challenge last weekend in aid of Care International.

Not only did the Seraphine team complete the grueling day-long charity challenge in good time, but together they raised £2946 for the charity Care – smashing their £2000 target, and earning them the award for the highest fundraising team!

The event took place in the stunning surroundings of Exmoor National Park in Somerset. Teams from all across the fashion industry arrived to idyllic views of rolling hills, lush green forest and gentle babbling brooks; but this was no relaxing countryside ramble… The fashion industry teams had come to complete a marathon distance in a day: 17k on foot, 16k by bike and 9k in a canoe! … (yes we think they’re mad too!)

Check out the video from last year’s event to see the kind of thing they got up to…

The Seraphine team leader, Finance Director John Bailey had this to say:

“It was definitely a challenge to complete the course, but our determination and teamwork kept us going – along with a ready supply of chocolates and biscuits to keep up our energy! We are proud to have been the team to raise the most funds for Care – a charity that works within the fashion sector improving the conditions for the women who work in our industry supply chain. It’s a worthwhile cause and an enjoyable challenge, so Seraphine will be looking to compete again next year.”

The charity Care International supports some of the world’s poorest people, setting up grassroots level projects to help fight poverty. Money raised by last week’s challenge will go towards projects to help poor garment workers, shoe makers and tailors around the world to start to expand their small businesses and work their way out of poverty. As part of the fashion industry, this work is dear to our hearts, and we are so pleased to be able to help.

It’s not too late to donate!

The team exceeded their target of £2000 by almost 50%, and donations are still coming in. If you’d like to donate to this worthy cause, simply visit our Just Giving Page and give what you can.
