The rise and rise of mummy bloggers – how you can join in

Back in the early 1990s, nobody could ever have imagined how the internet would take off and become such a huge part of our lives.

Nowadays we all shop without leaving our homes, find information in seconds, and broadcast our own voices into cyberspace, without giving any of it a second thought!

One aspect of the web that has really taken on a life of its own is the blog. What started off as a few simple web-based diaries has boomed into a multi-million pound industry we now call the ‘blogosphere’.

Among the biggest bloggers are ordinary mums or expectant mothers just like you. There are hundreds of thousands of them, sharing details of their pregnancy and family life – everything from morning sickness to the latest maternity fashions! Some are even famous, while others get the opportunity to review the latest maternity and pregnancy products.

How to start your own mummy blog

1. Let your unique voice shine through

Try pretending you’re talking to someone you know well if you get a bit stuck with this. Don’t be tempted to swallow a thesaurus either – it’s better to keep it simple and readable than overly fancy.

2. Post regularly
Try to post at least once a week in order to build up the maximum number of followers. It’s a good idea to decide beforehand how long each one will be – if you know you have to write an essay each time, it’ll put you off – and a notebook for ideas will prevent writers’ block. Don’t forget to invite comments and follow others to generate traffic too.

3. Don’t fall into the trap of ranting
It’s good to have opinions, but try to be fair even if you have to say something negative rather than letting your emotions cloud your vision. Also, avoid responding to trolls who post in your comments section, hard though it may be!

4. Be very careful with your personal information
Your blog shouldn’t feature your specific location and you might not even want to name your children and partner – other bloggers refer to them as things like ‘Darling Husband’, ‘Spudlet’ and ‘Himself’ for privacy.

5. Blogging about fashion during pregnancy
One popular topic often covered by mummy bloggers is maternity fashion and how to style your bump. We feature regular guest blogger contributions on our own blog and these fabulous blogging mums have covered topics such as:

Why not give blogging a go and see if you can become an active part of this thriving bloging community?

What’s on your pregnancy reading list?

Pregnancy is a wonderful time, full of changes and new experiences – but this can also mean that it can be a time of unease, and never quite knowing if what you are feeling is normal. They do say that knowledge is power, and aside from treating yourself to some beautiful new maternity clothes from Seraphine, many women find that reading up on pregnancy helps them to feel more prepared for the inevitable changes to come.

There are books to help with every aspect of pregnancy from morning sickness to labour. Of course the internet is a fantastic resource, but nothing beats snuggling up in your favourite maternity jumper and settling down with a real book in your hands!

Everyone experiences pregnancy differently, so we’ve rounded up a few of our old favourites and some new bestsellers as our suggestions to you, and you can make up your mind which ones are right to help you through your pregnancy.

What to expect when you're expecting
What to Expect When You’re Expecting – by Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel

This is a real pregnancy classic and has been reprinted time and time again to impart fresh advice to new generations of mothers.
It takes you through your pregnancy month by month and also has a special section for frequently asked questions that could prove invaluable when you wake up in the middle of the night in a panic about something that could be a completely normal feature of pregnancy.

Birth and Beyond – by Dr Yehudi Gordon

In his bestselling tome, the gynaecologist addresses pregnancy as well as the first nine months of the baby’s life – and it’s aimed at dads as well as mums!
This is great for parents who are looking into both conventional and complementary techniques for bringing up baby and the A to Z section is sure to be well thumbed once your baby is toddling.

The Day-by-Day Pregnancy Book – edited by Dr Maggie Blott

Anyone who grew up with Dorling Kindersley books will know that they are renowned for their excellent photographs and diagrams and this one is no exception. It’s remarkably detailed and clear – and the hour-by-hour rundown of one woman’s labour is a stand-out plus point. Full of advice from experts, you’ll definitely want to keep this one on the bedside table for reference.

pregnancy bibleYour Pregnancy Bible – by Anne Deans

As the name suggests, this book aims to be a comprehensive guide to all aspects of pregnancy and birth, and is especially good for its chapters on the health and wellbeing of the mother.
It has been reprinted numerous times so is fully updated and has received some excellent reviews over the years.

The New Contented Little Baby Book – by Gina Ford

Love her or loathe her, Gina Ford is a fixture on the bookshelves of mums up and down the country. Some swear by her techniques and others insist they don’t work at all, so you might want to give this book a read and see for yourself where you stand. Her methods are based on routine so could be ideal if you like order – and you may find you’re converted if your baby starts sleeping through the night!

Hopefully this has provided you with a few ideas. And of course, never forget that a mother’s instincts are a powerful  thing, so you don’t have to follow the advice given in the books if you don’t agree with it.

Finally, it is always wise to ask the advice of your GP or health visitor before making any changes to your routine, just to be on the safe side. Happy reading!

Find out our favourite apps to take you through pregnancy – and beyond

We barely go anywhere without a smartphone in tow these days, which is why an encyclopaedic library of apps is now available for us to download and interact with both at home and on the move. You no doubt already have lots of favourites, from news providers and shops to GPS locators. However, did you know that you can get scores of apps that have been designed specifically with pregnancy in mind? The reason we ask is because we’ve seen lots of them cropping up on our phones and tablets lately, so we thought you may be interested in a round-up of some of the best.

Some are just for fun, while others could prove really useful, so we’ll break them down into categories below.

Pregnancy advice and information

As soon as you find out you’re pregnant, you’ll no doubt have 1,001 questions to ask. While some of these can be fielded by friends and health visitors, it’s handy to be able to look up snippets of information too. This is where advisory apps really come into their own. They can cover everything from calculating due dates to how big your baby is week by week, meaning you’ll have the equivalent of several books in your pocket to check up on at any given time.

Try:

  • What to Expect – from the people behind the bestselling book What to Expect When You’re Expecting (Free)
  • BabyCentre My Pregnancy (free)

The name game

Coming up with lists of baby names is a fun way to pass the time on a train journey, but you might want to check the meaning of some, or have some random ones suggested for you. Enter the apps – they’re just like the books you can get, but much more portable and interactive.

Try:

  • Baby Name Generator
  • Baby Names
  • 50,000 Names (all free)

Keeping you occupied

You’ll probably find you do a lot of waiting around for appointments when you’re pregnant and it’s annoying if you’ve got nothing to do. Why not keep a couple of games on your phone or tablet to distract you and keep you occupied? They’re not just for kids and they might help prevent the dreaded baby brain if you choose puzzles.

Try:

Where’s My Water? (69p)

Words with Friends (free)

What’s the Phrase? (free)

Scoring style points

If you shop with Seraphine, we know you’ve already got great maternity style. However, it’s fun to keep on top of the trends by checking out what bloggers, fashion experts and other people are wearing too. Lots of apps provide daily updates on what to wear for certain events, which colours are in vogue and much more, so keep a few handy and you’ll never commit a faux pas again.

Try:

  • Guardian
  • Daily Mail (You Inspire)
  • Style Star Fashion Advice (all free)

During labour

Keep your smartphone handy when you go into labour, as you may find it’s really useful for things like timing contractions if you want to be sure how frequent and long-lasting they are.

Try:

  • Contraction Timer Lite (free)

When you’re breastfeeding

Once the baby arrives, you won’t have as much free time for playing games and looking up articles. However, that doesn’t mean apps can’t still be useful. Check out some of the great breastfeeding ones, which allow you to record how many feeds you’ve completed, alert you to when the next one is due and can even produce graphs to tell you if you’re on track with your feeding goals.

Try:

  • iBaby Feed (free)
  • The Breast Start App (free)

We’d love to know what you think – have you used these apps? Or do you know any others that could be useful for expectant mums? Do drop us a line in the comments section below!

Choose the right maternity swimwear style for you

Summer is now well and truly upon us and we don’t know about you, but we can’t stop talking about our holiday plans! We think that one major advantage of being pregnant is the fact that the pressure to have a bikini beautiful body for your summer holiday is well and truly off. There is no need to diet like a maniac, and those extra legs bums and tums classes you usually try to squeeze in before summer (ahem) are there if you want them, but really there’s no need! All you have to do is embrace your blossoming bump and revel in your new pregnancy curves!

To celebrate this fabulous fact, why not splash out on some beautifully cut maternity swimwear! Our styles are specifically designed to provide support and flatter you in all the right places. We have put together this simple guide to the best swimming costume styles so that you can find the one that makes you look and feel fantastic!

One piece

Gone are the days when the bikini was the only acceptable form of swimwear for a fashion conscious girl. The one piece swimming costume has made a triumphant return this year so if you invest in a stylish maternity one piece you will be bang on trend and feel 100% supported. Try our classic black halter neck swimming costume for a touch of vintage poolside pinup glamour as well as all the coverage and support you need.

Bikini

On the other hand, a bikini can be a great choice during pregnancy. It’s great for the early stages when you won’t need much extra support, but equally fabulous for showing off your bump in the later stages of pregnancy! Lookout for a good maternity bikini with a fold over bump band to roll up or down for more or less coverage – you can adapt it to suit you! Jessica Alba took our cute purple and pink bikini away on holiday with her during her first pregnancy to relax by the pool.

Tankini

A tankini provides a great versatile middle ground option with all the coverage and support of a one piece, as well as the option to roll it up to give your bump some air. You can adapt it depending on how you feel each day! Why not try our red polka dot tankini to bring some retro Riviera chic on holiday with you. Or opt for our black flared strapless tankini for a glamorous look with a handy skirt to skim over your hips.

Cover up

A nice floaty maternity kaftan is an essential for your summer holiday suitcase. Perfect for covering up on your way between the pool and the beach, it will keep you cool and is also a great way to prevent sunburn. Specifically designed to fit the pregnant figure, the flowing fabric will skim elegantly over your bump.

So whether you’re hitting the beach, relaxing by the pool, or splashing around in the paddling pool in the garden, make sure you invest in some quality maternity swimwear to keep you feeling fabulous and supported throughout your pregnancy.

Maternity wear – will you go fitted or flowing? – GIVEAWAY (CLOSED)

Virtually every time the fashion magazines publish pictures of red carpet events featuring pregnant celebrities, a debate erupts over their maternity wear. We’ve seen it time and again since we started writing for our website – there is always a barrage of comments and opinions about whether expectant moms should be wearing fitted or flowing clothes.

However, the celebrities themselves often seem to come down firmly in one camp or another. Lots of them wear figure-hugging dresses every time they appear in public, while others tend to stick to tops that skim loosely over their bump for the duration of their pregnancy.

But which will you choose? To help you out, we’ll present examples of each and suggest some outfits that could help you get the look.

Fitted and figure-hugging

Some women absolutely can’t wait to show off their bump and don’t mind who see it – they’re pregnant and they want the world to know! It’s not generally acceptable to go around with your tummy sticking out though, so the next best thing is a dress that clings to those curves and displays it in all its glory.

Celebrities who have adopted this approach in the not-too-distant past include Hilary Duff, Camila Alves and Jessica Simpson, with Jess telling Us Weekly: “I like wearing things more fitted. You want to show off your bump! It’s just so fun.”

Halle Berry is also showing she’s not afraid to wear fitted gowns to big events, having sported several lately.

Get the look with Seraphine:

Flowing and flirty

At the other end of the scale, there are women who aren’t at all keen on having everyone knowing they’re pregnant. If you have a friend or colleague who adopts this approach, it’s entirely possible you won’t even know they’re expecting until the third trimester. They tend to wear printed tops and pants that draw the eye away from the belly, or dresses that skim rather than cling as a cunning disguise. That’s not to say they wear anything remotely tent-like, though. They’re still fashionable, but subtly so.

Celebrities who have dressed like this include the Duchess of Cambridge, Rachel Zoe and – remarkably – Kim Kardashian. OK, so Kim wasn’t demure all the time, but we did see her in a great beige dress with a flowing hem just a few weeks ago and it really suited her.

Get the look with Seraphine:

So, which is best?

You might expect us to make a choice at this point and advise you accordingly on what maternity clothes to wear – but we’re not going to. Why not? Because we know you’ll be fabulous whatever you decide to embrace. Besides, why should you stick to one or the other? Go for what makes you feel good and change from day to day. If you’re feeling outgoing, wear a figure-hugging dress. When you just want to blend in (or you’re at work), try a flared tunic.

At Seraphine, we design each and every item with the pregnant form in mind so you can be sure you’ll look amazing, whether you’re in bodycon or flowing silk.

With mocktails this good, you won’t miss alcohol at all!

Although a debate pops up every so often among health experts on the topic of drinking alcohol during pregnancy, we prefer to stick to the official advice, so we recommend sipping on nothing stronger than lemonade for the entire nine months (or from the time you find out you’re pregnant).

It’s funny though – as soon as you are told that you can’t have something, all of a sudden you want it ten times more than you did before! This is often the case with drinking – especially during the summer, when you’ll probably be spending a fair amount of time at BBQs and garden parties where everyone around you will be indulging in nice cool glasses of  their favourite tipple.

But there is an alternative to knocking back endless cans of diet coke or water and possibly feeling a little sorry for yourself. How about trying some tasty mock cocktails – mocktails – this year? There are lots of great recipes around and many of them taste so good that you won’t miss the alcohol in the slightest!

There is also an added bonus for pregnant women, as mocktails are usually full of fruit juices and so contain lots of extra nutrients for you and the baby. Throw in the fact that they’re usually lower in sugar and calories (as long as they’re not cream-based) than fizzy drinks like cola, and they really are the perfect drink for expectant yummy mummies.

So, how do you create the perfect mocktail? Master mixer Ryan Magarian from Liquid Relations told Fit Pregnancy it’s all about symmetry. “When you’re replacing alcohol with water, tea or juice, you still want a perfect balance of all ingredients. Just like a real cocktail, a mocktail should never be too sweet or too syrupy,” he explained.

You should aim for crisp flavours – not just a mish-mash of different tastes because you’ve piled everything into one glass – a dash of colour, and something to decorate your drink when you present it. Don’t forget that colour can come in the form of fruit or tinted glasses if you’re making something like elderflower-based drinks that won’t appear bright. And to add to your five-a-day, look out for recipes containing pomegranate, orange or acai, as they’ll provide a real boost of antioxidants.

Here are some of Seraphine’s favourites to get you started.

1. Ray of Sunshine (from Baby Centre)

Fill a two-litre jug with ice and add two tablespoons of lemon and orange sherbet mixed into a paste with a little water. Pour in 50ml of apple juice and 50ml of pineapple juice. Top the jug up with sparkling water or lemonade and serve with umbrellas.

2. Mango Fizz (from Wayne Collins at BBC’s Something for the Weekend)

Place two scoops of mango sorbet and a tablespoon of ready-made fruit salad into a highball glass, then pour in two teaspoons of passion fruit syrup and two teaspoons of grenadine. Top up with ginger beer and serve with a long-handled spoon.

3. Juicy Ginger (this one is great if you’re getting morning sickness)

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add 100ml of apple juice, 50ml of pear juice, 20ml of lemon juice and one medium-sized piece of grated root ginger. Shake well and strain into a highball glass filled with ice. Top it up with ginger beer and garnish with a slice of apple.

If you throw a summer party and serve up mocktails like this, we think even guests who can drink will be queuing up for them – why not make up a few ideas of your own and share them with us too?

A maternity fashion show sponsored by Seraphine!

It looks like a fabulous time was had by all at the charity maternity fashion show held at Saffron Walden Town Hall on Wednesday evening – the pictures speak for themselves! Here at Seraphine we were proud to sponsor Beauty, Bump and Baby and were very happy to see some of our gorgeous dresses lighting up the catwalk. We think the models looked stunning in our Mock wrap polka dot dress  and our vibrant Colour block maxi. We also love the daring figure hugging styles on show, they remind us of our bold Blue body con dress. We were really impressed with the high quality maternity fashion on show, and we think it’s fantastic that all of the money raised is going to a good cause. A huge well done to all involved, you all look magnificent!

Break the rules for great maternity style

Everyone has heard fashion commandments like thou shalt not wear socks with sandals – they’re passed down by magazines, friends and our mothers to prevent us making faux pas that might be embarrassing in public. However, while certain advice may still apply, we think some of these rules are outdated. We’re here to show you how breaking them can result in great maternity style that will really make you turn heads this summer.

1.     Horizontal stripes

You probably think that horizontal stripes are best avoided, but this definitely isn’t the case. Particularly during pregnancy, they can actually really flatter your figure and make for a cool nautical feel. Try maternity dresses in white and navy, or a top in darker colours paired with jeans to see what we mean. Alyson Hannigan often wore stripes when she was pregnant, so check out some past photographs online if you need some inspiration.

Get the look with Seraphine:

2.     Patterns with prints

There was a time when you would never have seen spots mixed with stripes or geometric put with paisley, but this has gone out of the window as we get more adventurous with what we wear. Summer 2013 is the season of the print, so why not make the most of it and adorn yourself with more than one? As long as you go for similar base colours or complementary hues on the maternity clothes you choose, it’ll look avant-garde rather than appearing as though you ran through your wardrobe covered in glue.

Get the look with Seraphine:

3.     Mixing black with brown … or navy with black

It’s often said that black and brown don’t go together, but look at women in many Mediterranean countries and you’ll see this isn’t the case at all. Black and tan look particularly nice as maternity fashion choices, as frequently demonstrated by Victoria Beckham. Likewise with navy and black – we don’t know who first said you shouldn’t wear them together, but they were wrong. However, mix them fairly evenly rather than just wearing, for example, a black dress with brown shoes, as this can look accidental.

Get the look with Seraphine:

4.     Clashing colours

If there’s anything that the long-running trend for colour blocking should have taught you, it’s that clashing different hues is absolutely fine, contrary to popular belief a few years ago! We especially like to see bold shades coming together, as it creates a really summery feel. For example, maternity tops that are bright pink will look eye-catching with azure as opposed to just black. Even shades you wouldn’t think would go together (like rust and fuchsia, or purple and orange) can be dazzling – it’s just a case of trying them out and seeing what works.

Go on – be a rebel and break the rules this summer!

Here comes the summer – Find what your maternity holiday wardrobe needs

There’s nothing better to perk up your spirits than some sunshine, whether it’s on a bucket and spade break in this country or on foreign shores. The sudden return of great weather in the UK has got us thinking about maternity swimwear and all the other items you might be wanting over the coming weeks to ensure you’re ready to hit the golden sands and feel fantastic about your body.

Don’t be concerned that it’s difficult to dress for warm weather now you’ve got a bump, either – all you need to do is invest in a few pieces that will build you a comprehensive maternity holiday wardrobe and you’ll find it’s a breeze. This part is really key to body confidence – don’t try to make your old beach wear stretch and change to fit you now, as it just won’t provide the support you need. For instance, past bikini tops may buckle under the pressure from your expanding chest, while bikini bottoms even from last year could start travelling southwards as you move. Neither makes for a good look – and it could prove embarrassing!

Instead, take a peek at Seraphine’s swimwear collection, as everything has been designed with pregnancy in mind for comfort, support and a really flattering look. Here’s a quick taster of some of our favourites.

Swimwear

We have plenty of swimwear to suit all tastes, whether it’s a maternity bikini, tankini or one-piece you’re after. You’ll soon notice that all or items have special adaptations to suit your new curves – the bikinis, for example, have roll-top fabric on the bottoms where they meet your tummy, so you can pull them up or down depending on where on your bump you want them to sit. One-pieces are very on-trend this summer, while tankinis offer the best of both worlds – you can move them around if you want some air to your middle, or keep the top pulled down.

Get the look with Seraphine:

Cover-ups

We all know it’s not a good idea to get too much sun, so cover-ups are an essential for both beach breaks and picnics in the park. If you’re heading to the coast, you want something you can fold up into a bag so it’s easy to carry, but that also looks great when you pull it on. A maternity kaftan is the perfect solution, as it’s light enough to keep you feeling cool and also offers plenty of coverage. Go for one with plenty of shaping though, so it’s flattering as opposed to tent-like!

Co-ordinating pieces

Even if you plan to do little else but relax on your holidays this summer, you’ll still want to leave the beach at some point. Consequently, make sure you pack plenty of maternity wear that can be thrown on quickly, leaving you comfortable and free to go exploring. A combination of maternity shorts, maxi skirts, light tops and dresses is your best bet, as this mini-capsule wardrobe will leave you covered for every eventuality. You can even mix and match it with your swimwear for an easygoing vibe.

All you need to do now is get your case packed and be ready for the sunshine – don’t you just love summer?

How your pregnancy hospital bag can feature style as well as substance

Some great outfits in your hospital bag will be a real confidence boost before and after you give birth. You’ll no doubt have been told already that it’s a good idea to have a bag packed, put in the hallway and ready to go to hospital once you reach about 36 weeks of pregnancy. There’s no telling exactly when the baby will arrive and you don’t want to be scrabbling around in your wardrobe for clothes while you’re trying to cope with the early stages of labour, after all! It’s not going to be like packing a holdall for an ordinary weekend away though – what on earth are you supposed to take?

On top of all the practical items that your midwife and other mums will be able to fill you in on (like sanitary items, water, lip balm, baby clothes etc), we’d recommend putting together a few different outfits that will ensure you still feel like your stylish self both before the birth and afterwards. Don’t forget that you’ll have lots of visitors once the baby is here – and although they’re technically there to see your new arrival, you won’t want to feel like you’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards, especially if they’re armed with cameras. Here are our top tips about what should be in your hospital bag.

Something cool and comfortable

Hospitals can be really hot, so it’s a good idea to pack plenty of light layers and natural fibres. Don’t forget that you might be sitting around for a while before everything starts as well, so a couple of changes of clothes are best. Take some long-sleeved tops and a cardigan or two, as well as some maternity leggings, as they’re really comfy for lounging in.

Maternity Nightwear

The chances of an overnight stay are high both before and after the baby comes, as labour can take time and midwives usually keep you in if this is your first baby too. Make sure you don’t forget nightwear – this will ensure you don’t end up in one of those awful hospital gowns! You can go for pjyamas before you give birth, while a nightie is best for during and afterwards, especially if it has button-down panels to aid breastfeeding.

Get the look at Seraphine:

Nursing clothes

Speaking of breastfeeding, you’ll need nursing clothes too. Items that are specially adapted will mean you can feed your new baby comfortably and discreetly, which is ideal when you’re not used to it yet. A good breastfeeding top will also appear stylish in all your visitors’ photos, so they won’t know it’s not a regular top. We’d definitely recommend a shawl too, in case there are lots of people coming and going.

A going-home outfit

Finally, don’t forget a fabulous outfit for when you’re let out into the world as a yummy mummy for the first time. You’re best off with maternity clothes, as your tummy is still likely to be quite swollen and the rest of your body might feel tender, but choose good ones and nobody will know anyway. Maternity jeans with a nursing top are always a good choice, but a dress might be nice if it’s a sunny day.

Start packing now and you’ll have one less thing to worry about, plus you’ll definitely be the most stylish new mum on the ward!
