Getting into Maternity Wear – By Ana Santi, Deputy Editor at Drapers

Ana Santi is the deputy editor of Drapers magazine and has worked in the fashion industry for over eight years. She is currently expecting her first child and plans to look fabulous whilst pregnant. All the images used are of Ana wearing our Dove Grey Multiway Maternity Dress at her sister’s wedding.

Ana Santi - Seraphine maternity

It was the water cooler that did it. Whilst refilling my glass, a fellow officer worker did a strange double-take at my stomach: an expression somewhere between surprise and embarrassment. “That was one hearty bowl of pasta she must have scoffed down at lunch” were probably her thoughts.

In fact, I was 21 weeks pregnant and, jeans aside, I was still wearing my normal clothes. But I knew then that it wouldn’t be long before I needed to buy new stuff, and the thought scared me.

I’m a fashion journalist, so what I wear matters. I also like tailored clothes. Two factors that, when combined, don’t make for easy, carefree maternity dressing.

So I decided to consult my pregnant friends and those who already had children. They told me: Invest in skinny jeans. Avoid skinny jeans. Buy normal clothes a few sizes bigger. Don’t buy normal clothes a few sizes bigger. Buy cheap maternitywear – you’ll be sick of the sight of it after the birth. Invest in quality.

At first, the mixed messages were overwhelming, but I soon realised that they made perfect sense. These are friends with their own, individual styles. They dress to suit their tastes and body shapes. They like to – and do – look good, and did so whilst pregnant, but without altering their pre-pregnancy style.

From then on, I actually started to get quite excited about a maternity wardrobe and showing off my bump in a proper pregnant way. Whether I’ll regret it later on, I’ve decided to go for quality (I may have a second child later on) and buy several key pieces for each season. Any excuse to buy new clothes…

But the first thing I did was go through my existing wardrobe. I counted two short, loose dresses that I can wear with tights right from winter through to summer. I found, right at the bottom of a drawer, another short black dress that I haven’t worn for years (don’t ask me why, it’s still pretty) with a sort of empire line (but without being billowy; silhouettes that are too loose-fitting can actually make you look much bigger than you are) that will be perfect for smart work occasions. My legs are probably my best feature, so I realised that shorter lengths on skirts and dresses and skinny jeans would be good investments.

Still in my wardrobe, I saw that a floral print skirt with an elasticated waistband would be perfect for spring, as will several loose fitting tops for summer. One friend pointed out the brilliance of blazersthey maintain a fitted silhouette and you can still fit into them. I have a couple of those in my wardrobe.

I then made a list of clothes to buy. I’ve invested in three pairs of skinny jeans: black for winter, grey for all seasons and cropped white for spring and summer. I’m considering buying just normal blue jeans too…

I also bought a smart white shirt and a short grey skirt, which is really versatile and can be worn with or without tights. That’s it so far (underwear aside, of course).

Also on the list but not yet purchased (buy in stages as you don’t know how big you’ll get how quickly) are stretch jersey or cotton tops. I’ll be buying these as soon as the weather allows me to put away my jumpers and the bump gets too big for existing tops. Figure-hugging maxi dresses and a pair of shorts are also part of the summer spree.

Finally, don’t just think about clothes. Flat shoes are on-trend right now and will be next season too, so invest in those. Several of my friends swore by great pedicures during pregnancy. And experiment with make-up and jewellery.

But the most important thing is to be yourself. If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you care enough about how you look during your pregnancy, so have fun with it. My bump won’t flatter a jumpsuit this summer, so I’m considering some dungarees instead. Every cloud…

Holly Willoughby loves our blue colour block maternity dress

Our favourite ITV presenter, the lovely Holly Willoughby was spotted in another Seraphine maternity dress this week!

This time the blossoming mum-to-be looked gorgeous in our Blue Colour Block Maternity Dress on Monday’s episode of This Morning!

Pregnant Holly Willoughby with Phillip Schofield on This Morning

This is the second time Holly’s rocked a Seraphine dress on the programme, and she seems to have a lot of love for light blue shades, as last time we saw her looking fabulous in our Blue Knot Front Maternity Dress (the blue version of The Duchess of Cambridge’s favourite pink maternity dress).

Holly looked stunning in the Seraphine style – the asymmetric empire line flattered her figure perfectly, and the striking colour combination of deep Persian blue and light aquamarine made her golden hair and complexion simply glow!

She styled her smart casual look with simple gold jewellery, flowing hair and fresh clean makeup for a put-together look that would work perfectly at the office, or for a stylish summer party!

Holly and her TV producer husband Dan are already parents to 5 year old Harry and 3 year old Belle, and are expecting baby number 3 later this year. Super Model Doutzen Loves Seraphine Maternity Maxi Dresses

Doutzen Kroes has done it again! This time the stunning Dutch super model and firm Seraphine fan enjoyed a family day out at the park, looking fantastic in another Seraphine maternity maxi dress!

The expectant mum took some time out on Tuesday to relax with her DJ husband Sunnery James and their three year old son Phyllon Joy Gorré in a park in the trendy Tribeca area of New York. The family looked to be making the most of the sun, and enjoying their last few months as a trio before Phyllon becomes a big brother with the arrival of a brand new baby girl!

The dress Doutzen wore is our Aqua Draped Maternity Maxi Dress – the perfect choice for a sunny afternoon; it’s stylish, flattering and incredibly easy to wear. The vibrant aqua shade of this dress worked perfectly with Doutzen’s blond hair and creamy complexion, and the cross-over empire line design made the most of her blossoming pregnancy curves!

Doutzen let her maternity maxi do the talking, styling it simply with gladiator sandals, a tan over-the-shoulder bag, a pair of delicate gold necklaces and a few tribal cuff bracelets. She continued the minimal look with a fresh face and her blond locks pulled back in a messy bun. The overall effect was simple and elegant with a relaxed boho twist.

This is the second Seraphine maternity maxi dress Doutzen has donned, as she was spotted earlier this month looking fantastic in our Navy Blue Crochet Back Maternity Maxi Dress. And she’s not the only stylish celebrity mum to love our maternity maxi dresses. In fact they have rather a devoted celebrity fan club including Jessica Alba, Alyson Hannigan, Zara PhillipsDania Ramirez and most recently Christina Aguilera!

Baby names – Guess which celeb baby name means “pig” in Punjabi?

Choosing baby names for your little ones is one of the first decisions you’ll make for your children – and it’s a big one! They will live with the names you choose now for the rest of their lives. It will be the first word they learn to spell, and the first way that they will begin to shape their own identities… so it’s worth putting a bit of time and effort into finding the right one!

Here at Seraphine our maternity dresses are our babies and each one has it’s own special name – meet Jolene, Tessa and Blossom for example – so we understand a little of what you go through.

Girl Names

Choosing baby girl names can seem daunting at first, but can also be a lot of fun – there are just so many options! Will you be thinking about nature names like Willow, Lily or Ruby?  What about literary names inspired by your favourite fictional heroines – who wouldn’t be proud to be named after the incurably curious Alice, of Wonderland fame or after Jane Austen’s devilishly witty leading lady Lizzy Bennet?

Boy Names

When choosing boy names you’ll tend to be on more stable territory, but there are still plenty of options to consider. Will you go for one of the strong traditional baby names like James, Thomas or William, or will you be thinking about more unique boy names – maybe a cultural name that reflects his heritage, or something more unusual…

Unusual Baby Names

Baby names

When it comes to unusual baby names, celebrity parents have it down to a fine art. Some of our favourite celebrity mums are fantastic sources of inspiration: Thandie Newton named her son Booker Jombe, Kate Winslet named hers Bear Blaze, Gwen Stefani’s youngest is called Apollo Bowie Flynn and we love Beyonce’s choice for Blue Ivy & can’t wait to see what she names her twins!

Royal baby names

If you are keen for your little ones to have unusual baby names – something that sets them apart from the rest of their class, make sure to run a quick check to see where your pick ranks on the latest baby name popularity polls. It wouldn’t do to find yourself inadvertently in the middle of a name fad!

Unusual baby names

And of course it’s a good idea to be careful with checking out name meanings too. Tom Cruise & Katy Holmes may well have been thinking of the Persian word for “red rose” when they named their daughter Suri, but they perhaps didn’t realise that it also means “pig” in Punjabi, “pointy nose” in Indian and “pickpocket” in Japanese!

Checking Your Baby Names

Once you have a clear idea of the names you’re leaning towards, make sure to say them out loud and write them down with your surname, and check all the ways they could be abbreviated and initialed. For example Lydia Sarah Davis is a lovely sounding name, but LSD are perhaps not the initials you’d want for your little girl!

And as a final check, it’s worth running the full name through Google – just to make sure you’re not accidentally giving your little one the same name as a notorious criminal – you can’t be too careful!

In the end, whichever name you choose will soon start to feel right – and you wouldn’t be able to imagine your little one called anything else.

Happy naming mamas!

Jessica Ennis Hill Talks Pregnancy, Training and Living for Sport

Inspirational athlete and mum-to-be Jessica Ennis-Hill appeared on Sky Sports this week, talking about pregnancy, training and her plans for a come back at the 2016 Rio Olympics! Jessica, her husband Andy and their chocolate Labrador Myla are expecting a new addition to their family very soon!

The Olympic Heptathlon champion has kept up her training throughout her pregnancy, though she admits she’s easing it off now that she’s into the later stages – opting for regular gentle swimming, cycling and running sessions. Some women are wary of doing too much exercise during pregnancy, but if like Jessica, you are used to an active lifestyle, carrying on with your regular routine won’t hurt you or your baby. Just as long as you are sensible and listen to your body’s signals, it can actually be incredibly beneficial.

Staying active certainly doesn’t seem to have done Jessica any harm! She looked fantastic on screen, showing off her radiant pregnancy glow in our Black Knot Front Maternity Top, which she accessorised with a chunky statement necklace.

She was there as a judge for Sky Sports’ Living for Sport Awards. Jessica and her fellow sports stars David Beckham, world champion boxer Katie Taylor and Olympic sprinter Darren Campbell are acting as ambassadors for the programme, which is working with schools to encourage teenagers to try new sports. Campbell explains the programme’s aim:

“We’re using sport stars and sport skills to improve the lives of thousands of young people.

Sport helps people think, helps people listen, helps people to speak up and helps people work together.  Different sports inspire different people but one thing is true: there’s a sport for everyone and it can change your life.”

This seems like good advice for all of us – not just kids in school!

If you are planning to get active during your pregnancy, make sure you have a few good pairs of maternity leggings. International super model and mum-to-be Doutzen Kroes chose our  Bamboo Maternity Leggings for her pre-natal ballet classes – they are made in an ultra soft fabric designed to support your new curves and keep you cool, wicking away sweat. And why not hit the pool for a few laps or a fun aqua-aerobics class in our Black Racer Back Swimsuit!

So don’t be afraid to get outside and get active – a good workout is guaranteed to raise your energy levels and boost your mood!

Styling Award Winning Stars – Seraphine at Cannes & the BAFTAs

Making an appearance at two separate red carpet events in just one weekend, our ultra glamorous luxe maternity evening gown is a true international style winner!

Cannes

First, we spotted our gorgeous Navy Silk & Lace Maternity Evening Gown at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, where the lovely Isabelle Cailley simply glowed in it. She was out on the red carpet to support her director husband Thomas Cailley, whose film ‘Fighters’ is up for an award at the festival.

Isabelle looked beautiful in the dress, and though it was Thomas’s day, we can’t help thinking that she outshone her man on the red carpet! The full length gown in pure silk was the perfect choice for the sophisticated glitz and understated glamour of Cannes.

The BAFTAs

Award winner and star of The IT Crowd Katherine Parkinson wowed on stage as she collected her award in one of our most glamorous LUXE maternity dresses!

The expectant mum looked stunning as she picked up the award for best female performance in a comedy programme for her portrayal of Jen Barber in The IT Crowd. As she reached the stage after a quick trot from her place in the audience she couldn’t resist joking – “Sorry that took so long, but there are two of us”!

The dress Katherine wore was our Navy Silk & Lace Maternity Evening Gown – a sumptuous full length gown in pure navy blue silk with an overlaid bodice in intricate black lace. The style suited her perfectly, and she tied the silk sashes at the back to define her empire line, making the most of her blossoming baby bump.  She completed her glamorous look with an elegant up-do, pretty drop earrings and gold bangles.

Katherine and her actor husband Harry Peacock are expecting their second baby later this year – a little brother or sister for their 1 ½ year old daughter Dora.

We are sending huge congratulations to Katherine! With a baby on the way and a BAFTA under her belt, 2014 is shaping up to be quite a year for her, and we are so proud to have dressed her for such a special night!

Presenter Holly Willoughby rocks a Seraphine maternity dress on TV

This Morning star Holly Willoughby looked as gorgeous as ever in a Seraphine maternity dress on the show this week!

The stylish mum of 2 looked fantastic in our turquoise knot front maternity dress on Thursday’s episode of This Morning. Holly looked ultra stylish and relaxed as she interviewed guests between joking around with co-presenter Phillip Schofield.

The maternity dress she wore is a blue version of the one The Duchess of Cambridge wore in those beautiful first official photographs with Prince George. It’s one of our most popular styles and comes in a variety of colours including vibrant fuchsia, navy blue, purple and green. But we think the blue one was the perfect choice for Holly – it looked stunning with her blonde locks and radiant pregnancy glow.

Holly and her producer husband Dan Baldwin announced that they’re expecting baby number three via Holly’s website saying:

Surprise Surprise (and it was a surprise!!) I’m really happy and excited to tell you that Dan and I are expecting baby number 3!!

We feel blessed and very lucky to be giving Belle and Harry a little brother or sister later this year. Xxx”

The family has decided not to find out the sex of the baby, so 5 year old Harry and 3 year old Belle will have to wait a while to see whether they’ll have a baby brother or a sister to play with!

Working in the public eye, Holly had to be particularly careful about keeping her pregnancy news under wraps at first, but since the big announcement, she’s been celebrating her blossoming shape in her signature day dresses in bright colours and patterns!

Congratulations Holly, and keep up the sensational style!

P.S. If you’re looking for a book that your little girl will fall in love with, Holly and her sister Kelly have just published the third installment of their fabulous ‘School for Stars‘ series!

Pregnancy Superfood – Healthy meals for breakfast, lunch & dinner

Here at Seraphine we like to focus on the positives. When you’re pregnant it can seem like people only ever want to tell you about things you can’t do: no sushi, no alcohol etc. etc.

Well we like to tell you about the things you can do. We’ve put together a quick top ten of the fabulous foods that will work wonders for you and your growing baby. These are the pregnancy superfoods – packed with vitamins, minerals and rich in folate:

  • Avocado – folic acid, potassium, vitamin C & B6
  • Nuts – copper, manganese, magnesium, selenium, zinc, potassium, calcium & vitamin E
  • Yoghurt – calcium, protein & folic acid
  • Wild Salmon – Omega 3, potassium, selenium, vitamin B12
  • Fortified cereals – folic acid & fibre
  • Cooked lentils – folic acid, protein, vitamin B6 & iron
  • Spinach – folic acid, iron, vitamin A & calcium
  • Broccoli – folic acid, vitamin A, C & calcium
  • Asparagus – fibre, folic acid, vitamin A, C & E
  • Eggs – low calorie, high protein & omega 3

We know this list might look a little bit scary with greens and minerals all over the place, but believe us, with a little creativity in the kitchen you won’t know what you were worried about!

We’ve put together a few simple meal suggestions which are quick, easy and oh so tasty:

Breakfast

Whether you’re lounging in maternity pyjamas, or up, dressed and busy already, beginning with a hearty breakfast is a great way to start the day with plenty of whole grains, vitamins and protein.

Avocado & hardboiled egg on toast

Spread half a mashed avocado on a thick slice of wholegrain toast and top it off with slices of hardboiled egg and a sprinkling of salt & pepper. This tasty breakfast treat is quick and easy to make, packed with flavour, and will keep you going all morning.

Cereal with fruit and yoghurt

Or you could add a sweeter dimension to your morning with a bowl of fortified cereal, fruit and yoghurt. Fortified cereal is full of whole grains, vitamins and folic acid, and yoghurt is another nutritional over-achiever with all the calcium of milk plus added protein and folate! Add to this one or two of your five a day and you’ve got yourself a bowl full of goodness!

Lunch
