Baby names – Guess which celeb baby name means “pig” in Punjabi?

Choosing baby names for your little ones is one of the first decisions you’ll make for your children – and it’s a big one! They will live with the names you choose now for the rest of their lives. It will be the first word they learn to spell, and the first way that they will begin to shape their own identities… so it’s worth putting a bit of time and effort into finding the right one!

Here at Seraphine our maternity dresses are our babies and each one has it’s own special name – meet Jolene, Tessa and Blossom for example – so we understand a little of what you go through.

Girl Names

Choosing baby girl names can seem daunting at first, but can also be a lot of fun – there are just so many options! Will you be thinking about nature names like Willow, Lily or Ruby?  What about literary names inspired by your favourite fictional heroines – who wouldn’t be proud to be named after the incurably curious Alice, of Wonderland fame or after Jane Austen’s devilishly witty leading lady Lizzy Bennet?

Boy Names

When choosing boy names you’ll tend to be on more stable territory, but there are still plenty of options to consider. Will you go for one of the strong traditional baby names like James, Thomas or William, or will you be thinking about more unique boy names – maybe a cultural name that reflects his heritage, or something more unusual…

Unusual Baby Names

Baby names

When it comes to unusual baby names, celebrity parents have it down to a fine art. Some of our favourite celebrity mums are fantastic sources of inspiration: Thandie Newton named her son Booker Jombe, Kate Winslet named hers Bear Blaze, Gwen Stefani’s youngest is called Apollo Bowie Flynn and we love Beyonce’s choice for Blue Ivy & can’t wait to see what she names her twins!

Royal baby names

If you are keen for your little ones to have unusual baby names – something that sets them apart from the rest of their class, make sure to run a quick check to see where your pick ranks on the latest baby name popularity polls. It wouldn’t do to find yourself inadvertently in the middle of a name fad!

Unusual baby names

And of course it’s a good idea to be careful with checking out name meanings too. Tom Cruise & Katy Holmes may well have been thinking of the Persian word for “red rose” when they named their daughter Suri, but they perhaps didn’t realise that it also means “pig” in Punjabi, “pointy nose” in Indian and “pickpocket” in Japanese!

Checking Your Baby Names

Once you have a clear idea of the names you’re leaning towards, make sure to say them out loud and write them down with your surname, and check all the ways they could be abbreviated and initialed. For example Lydia Sarah Davis is a lovely sounding name, but LSD are perhaps not the initials you’d want for your little girl!

And as a final check, it’s worth running the full name through Google – just to make sure you’re not accidentally giving your little one the same name as a notorious criminal – you can’t be too careful!

In the end, whichever name you choose will soon start to feel right – and you wouldn’t be able to imagine your little one called anything else.

Happy naming mamas!

Jessica Ennis Hill Talks Pregnancy, Training and Living for Sport

Inspirational athlete and mum-to-be Jessica Ennis-Hill appeared on Sky Sports this week, talking about pregnancy, training and her plans for a come back at the 2016 Rio Olympics! Jessica, her husband Andy and their chocolate Labrador Myla are expecting a new addition to their family very soon!

The Olympic Heptathlon champion has kept up her training throughout her pregnancy, though she admits she’s easing it off now that she’s into the later stages – opting for regular gentle swimming, cycling and running sessions. Some women are wary of doing too much exercise during pregnancy, but if like Jessica, you are used to an active lifestyle, carrying on with your regular routine won’t hurt you or your baby. Just as long as you are sensible and listen to your body’s signals, it can actually be incredibly beneficial.

Staying active certainly doesn’t seem to have done Jessica any harm! She looked fantastic on screen, showing off her radiant pregnancy glow in our Black Knot Front Maternity Top, which she accessorised with a chunky statement necklace.

She was there as a judge for Sky Sports’ Living for Sport Awards. Jessica and her fellow sports stars David Beckham, world champion boxer Katie Taylor and Olympic sprinter Darren Campbell are acting as ambassadors for the programme, which is working with schools to encourage teenagers to try new sports. Campbell explains the programme’s aim:

“We’re using sport stars and sport skills to improve the lives of thousands of young people.

Sport helps people think, helps people listen, helps people to speak up and helps people work together.  Different sports inspire different people but one thing is true: there’s a sport for everyone and it can change your life.”

This seems like good advice for all of us – not just kids in school!

If you are planning to get active during your pregnancy, make sure you have a few good pairs of maternity leggings. International super model and mum-to-be Doutzen Kroes chose our  Bamboo Maternity Leggings for her pre-natal ballet classes – they are made in an ultra soft fabric designed to support your new curves and keep you cool, wicking away sweat. And why not hit the pool for a few laps or a fun aqua-aerobics class in our Black Racer Back Swimsuit!

So don’t be afraid to get outside and get active – a good workout is guaranteed to raise your energy levels and boost your mood!

Styling Award Winning Stars – Seraphine at Cannes & the BAFTAs

Making an appearance at two separate red carpet events in just one weekend, our ultra glamorous luxe maternity evening gown is a true international style winner!

Cannes

First, we spotted our gorgeous Navy Silk & Lace Maternity Evening Gown at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, where the lovely Isabelle Cailley simply glowed in it. She was out on the red carpet to support her director husband Thomas Cailley, whose film ‘Fighters’ is up for an award at the festival.

Isabelle looked beautiful in the dress, and though it was Thomas’s day, we can’t help thinking that she outshone her man on the red carpet! The full length gown in pure silk was the perfect choice for the sophisticated glitz and understated glamour of Cannes.

The BAFTAs

Award winner and star of The IT Crowd Katherine Parkinson wowed on stage as she collected her award in one of our most glamorous LUXE maternity dresses!

The expectant mum looked stunning as she picked up the award for best female performance in a comedy programme for her portrayal of Jen Barber in The IT Crowd. As she reached the stage after a quick trot from her place in the audience she couldn’t resist joking – “Sorry that took so long, but there are two of us”!

The dress Katherine wore was our Navy Silk & Lace Maternity Evening Gown – a sumptuous full length gown in pure navy blue silk with an overlaid bodice in intricate black lace. The style suited her perfectly, and she tied the silk sashes at the back to define her empire line, making the most of her blossoming baby bump.  She completed her glamorous look with an elegant up-do, pretty drop earrings and gold bangles.

Katherine and her actor husband Harry Peacock are expecting their second baby later this year – a little brother or sister for their 1 ½ year old daughter Dora.

We are sending huge congratulations to Katherine! With a baby on the way and a BAFTA under her belt, 2014 is shaping up to be quite a year for her, and we are so proud to have dressed her for such a special night!

Watch the big moment and an exclusive interview with Katherine!

Presenter Holly Willoughby rocks a Seraphine maternity dress on TV

This Morning star Holly Willoughby looked as gorgeous as ever in a Seraphine maternity dress on the show this week!

The stylish mum of 2 looked fantastic in our turquoise knot front maternity dress on Thursday’s episode of This Morning. Holly looked ultra stylish and relaxed as she interviewed guests between joking around with co-presenter Phillip Schofield.

The maternity dress she wore is a blue version of the one The Duchess of Cambridge wore in those beautiful first official photographs with Prince George. It’s one of our most popular styles and comes in a variety of colours including vibrant fuchsia, navy blue, purple and green. But we think the blue one was the perfect choice for Holly – it looked stunning with her blonde locks and radiant pregnancy glow.

Holly and her producer husband Dan Baldwin announced that they’re expecting baby number three via Holly’s website saying:

Surprise Surprise (and it was a surprise!!) I’m really happy and excited to tell you that Dan and I are expecting baby number 3!!

We feel blessed and very lucky to be giving Belle and Harry a little brother or sister later this year. Xxx”

The family has decided not to find out the sex of the baby, so 5 year old Harry and 3 year old Belle will have to wait a while to see whether they’ll have a baby brother or a sister to play with!

Working in the public eye, Holly had to be particularly careful about keeping her pregnancy news under wraps at first, but since the big announcement, she’s been celebrating her blossoming shape in her signature day dresses in bright colours and patterns!

Congratulations Holly, and keep up the sensational style!

P.S. If you’re looking for a book that your little girl will fall in love with, Holly and her sister Kelly have just published the third installment of their fabulous ‘School for Stars‘ series!

Pregnancy Superfood – Healthy meals for breakfast, lunch & dinner

Here at Seraphine we like to focus on the positives. When you’re pregnant it can seem like people only ever want to tell you about things you can’t do: no sushi, no alcohol etc. etc.

Well we like to tell you about the things you can do. We’ve put together a quick top ten of the fabulous foods that will work wonders for you and your growing baby. These are the pregnancy superfoods – packed with vitamins, minerals and rich in folate:

  • Avocado – folic acid, potassium, vitamin C & B6
  • Nuts – copper, manganese, magnesium, selenium, zinc, potassium, calcium & vitamin E
  • Yoghurt – calcium, protein & folic acid
  • Wild Salmon – Omega 3, potassium, selenium, vitamin B12
  • Fortified cereals – folic acid & fibre
  • Cooked lentils – folic acid, protein, vitamin B6 & iron
  • Spinach – folic acid, iron, vitamin A & calcium
  • Broccoli – folic acid, vitamin A, C & calcium
  • Asparagus – fibre, folic acid, vitamin A, C & E
  • Eggs – low calorie, high protein & omega 3

We know this list might look a little bit scary with greens and minerals all over the place, but believe us, with a little creativity in the kitchen you won’t know what you were worried about!

We’ve put together a few simple meal suggestions which are quick, easy and oh so tasty:

Breakfast

Whether you’re lounging in maternity pyjamas, or up, dressed and busy already, beginning with a hearty breakfast is a great way to start the day with plenty of whole grains, vitamins and protein.

Avocado & hardboiled egg on toast

Spread half a mashed avocado on a thick slice of wholegrain toast and top it off with slices of hardboiled egg and a sprinkling of salt & pepper. This tasty breakfast treat is quick and easy to make, packed with flavour, and will keep you going all morning.

Cereal with fruit and yoghurt

Or you could add a sweeter dimension to your morning with a bowl of fortified cereal, fruit and yoghurt. Fortified cereal is full of whole grains, vitamins and folic acid, and yoghurt is another nutritional over-achiever with all the calcium of milk plus added protein and folate! Add to this one or two of your five a day and you’ve got yourself a bowl full of goodness!

Lunch

Salads are great for a light lunch in the middle of the day, and can be the perfect way to introduce some of the more unusual ingredients like lentils and nuts into your diet. Whether you’re rocking your maternity blazer at work or chilling at home in maternity jeans and a tunic, these healthy options are quick, delicious and nutritious!

Give Ricardo Cuisine’s spinach, lentil and asparagus salad a try. This bowl is simply packed with flavour and has a mega helping of those all important pregnancy superfoods!

Or why not try this warming salad from Mel’s Kitchen Café with spinach, bacon, apple, feta and sweet and spicy nuts – completely delicious at any time of the day!

Dinner

In the evening you may be looking for something a little heartier. Lean meats like chicken or pork are great, and if you’re a salmon fan you’ll be pleased to know that this particular fish is safe to eat and full of fabulous Omega 3s to help your baby’s brain develop! Why not slip into one of your favourite maternity dresses and give these folate-filled recipes a try.

This spring chicken dish from the BBC is packed with fresh spring greens, broccoli and pesto. It tastes fantastic and is a great source of vitamins, minerals and that all important folate.

Or for a fish option, have a go at this baked salmon recipe with garlic and Dijon mustard from Natasha’s Kitchen.

Happy cooking, and bon appétit!

The Met Gala – Top Three Colour Trends from the Red Carpet

The most glamorous event in the fashion calendar, The Met Gala was held at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art this week, and the glitterati were out in full force and dressed to impress!

The ball, hosted by American Vogue editor Anna Wintour, celebrated the opening of The Met’s new show ‘Charles James: Beyond Fashion’ dedicated to the work of the late British couturier.

This year’s theme – ‘White Tie & Decorations’ saw a return to the classic elegance of years gone by, and the red carpet simply sparkled with spectacular floor length gowns.

We loved the stunning actress Lake Bell’s show stopping maternity gown in shocking red, and as for the rest – we’ve sorted through the best of the bunch to bring you our top 3 colour trends for red carpet style this season:

Belles of the Ball in Blue

Blue gowns at the Met Gala

We spotted gowns in every conceivable shade of blue this year, from Zooey Deschannel’s Tommy Hilfiger number in navy, to Diane Kruger’s delicate powder blue Jason Wu and Kim Kardashian’s show stopping split-to-the-hip Lanvin gown in midnight blue!

Blue is one of those miracle colours that flatters everyone – whatever your skin tone, so it’s always a great choice for a striking evening wear option. Explore our selection of maternity evening gowns in shades of blue:

Pastel pink continues to reign supreme this season, and plenty of celebs chose to work this girly trend at the ball. Hollywood beauty Rachel McAdams wore a flowing Grecian gown in soft dusty pink by Ralph Lauren, and southern songstress Taylor Swift chose a feminine Oscar de la Renta creation in a barely there shade of pink which perfectly highlighted her porcelain complexion. Meanwhile British model Suki Waterhouse dazzled in a fabulously frothy Burberry gown in gradated shades of blush and nude.

Pastel pink is one of the hottest evening wear trends this year, so invest in a stunning pink maternity dress and you won’t go far wrong!

Magnificent Monochromes

Monochrome gowns at the Met gala

Some of the hottest stars at the ball took the ‘White Tie’ theme and ran with it, so we saw some truly spectacular monochrome styles gracing the red carpet. Rihanna cut a striking silhouette in a brilliant white Stella McCartney cut out gown, and Victoria Beckham wore a stunning structured gown of her own design. Even Queen Bey herself, the one and only Beyonce strutted her stuff in a dazzling beaded Givenchy gown.

Monochrome evening wear styles always seem to have that slightly edgy vibe that will help you to stand out from the crowd. Explore our monochrome maternity dresses, or create an edgy black and white trouser suit style:

Recommended by a Friend – By Beauty Editor Sarah-Jane Corfield-Smith

Sarah Jane is a freelance beauty editor based in London with a self confessed obsession for designer shoes, pugs and pink lipstick. She has written on all aspects of health and beauty for big publications including Tatler, Zest, Look and Fabulous. She is currently expecting her first baby.

I have two beliefs in life. Firstly, do whatever makes your life easier. Secondly, if three or more people recommend the same thing whether it’s a mascara, hairdresser or restaurant, then you’re onto a winner. With less than two months until our baby arrives we have bought the big-ticket items (buggy, furniture etc.) but it’s the smaller things, and perhaps the products I’ll be using all day every day, that have alluded me.

Where do you start? I decided my best buying strategy was to merge my two beliefs and only go with items that came with three or more pregnant or new-mum friends recommendations with the promise they would make my life easier. Here’s that magical list:

Sleeping is one of my favourite hobbies but I’ve heard these babies don’t always share the same enthusiasm for it. So when friends told me about the Red Castle Cocoonababy Nest, and how it got their little ones sleeping soundly from an early age, I thought ‘this is for me/ us’. It’s an ergonomically designed mattress that keeps the baby’s head higher than its tummy, mimicking the foetal position, limiting gastric reflux and maximising comfort. I can totally understand why you may look at it and think it’s faddy however the common story I’ve heard is friends started with a conventional Moses basket and their babies wouldn’t settle. After nights of trying to cajole their babies off their chests and into the basket, they bought this hoping it would work, and it did, immediately. That’s no fad, that’s a genius buy.

2) Seraphine Long Line Popper Nursing Top

Seraphine maternity clothes

I honestly hadn’t given much thought to the whole subject of feeding (am I a terrible mother already?!) apart from that I wanted to give breast-feeding a go and hope it will work. But when friends told me that there are clothes that can help you do it more easily and discreetly, I was all ears. The Seraphine Long Line Popper Nursing Top is the top all my friends have stocked up on at the end of their pregnancies to fit over their burgeoning bumps and to wear on the other side, to help them feed more easily on the go – and I can see why. It has easy to un-do and do-up poppers and it’s long length covers up any wobbly bits, which I have a feeling I’m going to have plenty of. I’m also buying their Knot Front Maternity Top which you may recognise as the top version of the dress that Kate Middleton wore in her first official picture with Baby George. Also designed to be worn during pregnancy and for breastfeeding. Well if it’s good enough for Kate…..

3) aden + anais Muslins

Shop aden + anais Muslins

Muslins are apparently an absolute essential for life with a baby. Friends have told me they used them during labour to tie their hair up when they realised they’d forgotten hairbands (note to self: remember to put hair bands in hospital bag), wiping off sick, swaddling, using as a blanket. Basically, if in doubt use a muslin. And when it comes to muslins it has to be aden + anais, it’s the brand that Kate turned to for Baby George, and if it’s good enough for Baby George…

4) Caboo Carrier

Caboo Carrier

There’s a whole new set of vocab you learn when expecting a baby. And ‘Caboo’ is one of those words. The Caboo sling has been designed so you can carry your baby in the ‘frog legged position’. This helps prevent too much pressure being put on their hips and knees. That’s the technical side of things. What I’ve witnessed is friend’s popping their babies into their caboo, where they nestle down and go straight to sleep, leaving mum or dad with their hands free to enjoy a drink. I’ve also been told they’re exceptionally handy for when you take your baby to have injections as it keeps them calmer.

5) Water Wipes

Water Wipes

As a Beauty Editor I have tested many make-up wipes and found most to be packed with alcohol which can leave skin feeling dry and tight. If I’m not happy using them on myself I’m not going to use them on my baby, so I was thrilled when friends told me about Water Wipes. As the name suggests, these are literally just water on a wipe. No nasty ingredients, no alcohol and perhaps most importantly, can be used instead of having to find cotton wool, water and a bowl for top and tailing. Plus, I’ve heard these are genius for cleaning up those first few sticky nappies when the last thing you want to use is fluffy cotton wool that gets everywhere. I have placed a bulk order.
