Now is the time to spring clean your style – beauty, hair, fashion & all

March has arrived this week, and here in London we have seen the sun for the first time in what feels like at least 6 months! Yes, it seems like spring has finally sprung: The sun is out, the birds are singing and flowers are starting to bloom all over! Here at Seraphine, we think that now is the perfect time for a good spring clean – and no, we’re not talking about dusting the top shelves and turning the mattresses! Now is the time to spruce up your style and start incorporating a few of the new season trends into your beauty regimes, hair styles and fashion choices!

To give you a sneaky head start on the latest looks, we’ve put together our ultimate guide to all things spring style:

Spring Beauty

Spring makeup trends for pregnancy

Skin

Good news expectant mamas, this season is all about the glow! If you’re lucky, this may be coming naturally at the moment, but if not, it’s easy enough to fake with a touch of tinted moisturiser and a little illuminator across your brow bones, cheek bones, the bow of your lips and anywhere else that you want a little boost of light.

We love the Vapour Organic Beauty Trick Stick Illuminator which is all natural, organic, not tested on animals AND gives a lovely natural looking glow.

Eyes

Our favourite new season eye make-up trend is all about lightening and brightening white eye shadow and liner. Not only is this look fresh and on trend, but it is also a great trick for opening up your eyes and making them seem wider. For a day when you need a little extra oomph, why not try a pop of acid green or cobalt blue across your lids just above your lashes.

We love Lily Lolo’s range of pure mineral vegan eye shadows which are completely free of harsh chemicals! Try their ‘Angelic’ shade for a shimmering white finish.

Lips

This season is all about soft berry shades on the lips for a natural feminine look. The aim here is to achieve the perfect balance – not too glossy and not too matte – in a beautiful believable berry shade.

100% Pure lip and cheek tints are all natural and coloured with real fruit!

Spring Hair

Maternity cocktail dresses for special occasions front and back view

Whether your hair is long, short or somewhere in between, it’s all about loose relaxed styling with a high-shine glossy finish this season. Wear long hair in loose natural mermaid style waves, or tie it back in a romantic messy plait. For mid-length and shorter hair, a relaxed lived in look is the way forward – effortless and ever so chic. Whatever your length, why not try an extreme side parting for a fresh new look!

We love the Shiny Clean Shampoo and Conditioner from Balance Me, made in the UK with 97.5% natural ingredients and giving a naturally clean and glossy finish.

Spring Fashion

Pink and white maternity dresses by Seraphine

Floral

Nothing screams spring style like fashionable florals and this season has it all! Ranging from the delicately dainty to the bright, bold and brassy, the trick is to find the floral style that suits your mood!

Blue Floral Maternity Maxi Dress

Cherry Blossom Silk Chiffon Maternity Dress

Pink

Pink has been a massive colour trend this winter, and it looks like we’ll all be in the pink a little while longer, as the trend is set to continue into the spring! The muted tones of winter are being brightened up for the new season, so look out for lively shades in candyfloss and coral!

Coral Maternity Cropped Jeans

Peach Linen Maternity & Nursing Top

Sheer

The biggest trend we’ve spotted for this season is peek-a-boo sheer panels and floaty see-through layers. But don’t panic, this doesn’t have to be as risqué as it sounds – why not try a sheer blouse over a cute maternity camisole!

The Oscars: A Red Carpet Fashion Round Up – Get the Look

It’s that time of year again! Who was best dressed? Who was worst dressed? Who won the big awards? Who fell over for the second year running? (yes we’re looking at you Jennifer Lawrence!) and who rocked their pregnancy style on the red carpet? Ladies, we bring you, this year’s Oscars Red Carpet Fashion Round Up!

A post shared by Gugu Guru (@gugu_guru) on

There was a good turn out of expectant mamas at the awards this year, all rocking fabulous maternity evening gowns: Kerry Washington (top right) looked demure and elegant in a lavender strapless Jason Wu gown, Olivia Wilde (bottom) cut a truly striking silhouette in an edgy black and white Valentino number with a sexy cutout back, US TV presenter and red carpet fashion commentator Kristin Cavallari (top center) looked decidedly glamorous in a pure white Alexander McQueen gown with gilded capped sleeves, and Mrs Chris Hemsworth, Elsa Pataky (top left) flaunted her fabulous double trouble baby bump (she’s expecting twins in the very near future) in a beautifully beaded teal Elie Saab gown which was pulled in under the bump to highlight her changing figure!

Browse our Luxe Collection for more red carpet ready maternity gowns.

Now here’s a quick round up of our favourite fashion trends at the Oscars this year:

Following on from the fabulous pink coats we’ve been coveting this winter, we’re pleased to see that it looks like the trend for soft shades of pastel pink is set to follow us into the new season. There were several stars looking incredible on the red carpets in pale pink gowns this year.

The ever stylish Penelope Cruz opted for a floaty Grecian gown by Giambattista Valli in delicate rose pink, with a contrasting black band defining her empire line, and feminine sashes to finish the look.

Get the look: Rose Pink Lace Maternity Cocktail Dress

Lady Gaga has been known to make controversial fashion choices (to say the very least), but she looked strikingly statuesque at the Oscars in a figure hugging Versace gown in soft lilac pink. The dramatic art deco design enhanced her enviable feminine curves, giving her that perfect hourglass shape. The dress made a modern and memorable statement without resorting to gimmicks – we love it!

Embellished metallic gowns were a major trend at the Oscars, with everything from full length, fully beaded numbers, jewelled bodices, sequins, sparkles and Swarovski crystals!

A post shared by TuFaceCine (@tufacecine) on

The beautiful Emma Watson shimmered in a sparkling two tone Vera Wang gown. A glittering bodice in a modern gun metal knit was perfectly set off by the full length black mermaid tail skirt. The whole ensemble exuded sexy sophistication, proving once again that Emma has left Hogwarts far behind her.

A post shared by @italkfashionandstyle on

Cate Blanchett had a fantastic night receiving the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in Blue Jasmine. She ruled the red carpet in a breathtaking Armani gown at the other end of the metallic spectrum in beautiful pale gold. The romantic tulle gown was dripping with dazzling Swarovski crystals and sequins for a dramatic yet ever so feminine effect. She was heard telling Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet: ‘It’s heavy but I love it’.

Get the Look: Embellished Butterfly Sleeve Maternity Gown

The strapless sweetheart neckline was another major trend among stars at the Oscars this year. The ultra-feminine shape provides an unbeatable boost to the bust line, and was spotted on several stars as they walked the red carpet.

One of the stars of hit US drama ‘Scandal’, Kerry Washington flattered her growing bump in a strapless lavender Jason Wu gown which draped down over her curves in relaxed silk pleats, with a sexy thigh high split at the side.

Get the look: Secret Support Silk Maternity Evening Gown

Gravity was a big winner this year, and it’s star Sandra Bullock has been unanimously praised for her choice of the classically elegant midnight blue silk McQueen gown. The devastatingly gorgeous gown was perfectly fitted, with swathes of gathered silk falling from one hip to create a flattering fish tail effect: utterly stunning.

Get the look: Multiway Blue Silk Maternity Evening Gown

Roxy Manning in Seraphine at the Oscars

And did we mention, that this year, we were incredibly excited to see US TV personality and style expert Roxy Manning – Aka Red Carpet Roxy rocking Seraphine maternity dresses and gowns at several red carpet events leading up to the Oscars,  and in a Seraphine Luxe Maternity Gown at the Oscars themselves! She wore our:
Multiway Blue Silk Maternity Evening Gown (left)
Royal Blue Bodycon Maternity Dress (top right)

And a silk floral maternity gown from our Seraphine Luxe Collection (middle left)

Pregnancy Style Q&A with ELLE Commissioning Editor Hannah Swerling

Hannah Swerling is Commissioning Editor for ELLE Magazine. She lives in London with her husband Max and dog Blue and is expecting her first baby in March.

1. Describe your personal pregnancy style

My pregnancy style has been more casual than my regular style and not just for comfort. Pre-pregnancy, I wore a lot of high waisted skirts and trousers so it’s been an adjustment having to avoid that shape as my bump has grown. Otherwise, my staples – jeans, sweaters, leggings and simple dresses have seen me through.

2. What is your fail-safe outfit?

Black skinny jeggings (I hate that word!), a breton top and Nike Waffles

3. What is your favourite Seraphine piece?

I’ve worn the black babydoll dress throughout my pregnancy. It’s grown with me and looks stylish even when I don’t quite feel that way. The silk skirt gives it a luxe feel and the empire line shape is flattering at all stages of pregnancy.

Hannah Swerling wears a Seraphine black maternity dress

   4. What is the one style tip you want to share with other pregnant women?

Try not to think of it as dressing as a pregnant person. It should be about sticking to your personal style with a few adjustments. That way, you can still feel like yourself which is so important when everything else seems to be changing.

Seraphine’s maternity fashion FAQ for expectant brides-to-be

If you are planning a wedding and expecting a baby all at the same time, then first thing’s first; congratulations! And secondly – don’t panic. We have some truly exquisite bridal gowns, designed to flatter your changing figure. In fact, our bridal collection was recently featured in Irish wedding blog One Fab Day.

Planning your wedding is an incredibly exciting process, but there are of course plenty of big decisions to be made, and expecting a little one all at the same time not only amplifies the joy, but can bring with it a few extra considerations to bare in mind – especially when it comes to what you are going to wear! We’ve put together a helpful little FAQ for expectant brides to see you stylishly on your way to looking and feeling fabulous on your big day.

Ivory Lace and Silk Gown

1)      What is the best cut to flatter my changing curves?

As a maternity fashion brand, here at Seraphine we love our empire lines! The empire line cut is a super star style that is guaranteed to flatter your figure at every stage of pregnancy. It nips you in just under your bust to highlight the slimmest part of your body, and then flows down to skim comfortably over your curves, leaving plenty of room for your growing bump. Choosing a wedding dress with an empire line cut allows you to select your dream dress well in advance, without worrying about what size your bump will be on the big day!

Try our Ivory Multiway Grecian Wedding Gown for a stunning bridal style in pure silk, with a  flowing skirt that will drape beautifully over your figure.

2)      Can I get away with a shorter length?

The answer here is – of course you can! Showing off a little bit of leg in a stylish knee length bridal dress can be a lovely way of balancing out your bump. The main thing to think about when choosing your wedding dress is to find a style that allows you to show off your best assets. If you love your legs, don’t be afraid to flaunt them, or if you have upper arms that Michelle Obama would be proud of, opt for a sleeveless style! Your baby bump shouldn’t mean that you have to rule out any of your favourite styles. If you take the time to browse specialist maternity bridal shops and sites (like our own Luxe Bridal Collection), you are sure to find a whole host of styles, lengths, cuts and fabrics on offer – don’t let yourself feel limited!

Luxury Ivory Lace Maternity Wedding Dress

3)      How much can I expect to pay?

The good news is – You really can find a maternity bridal dress to suit any budget these days, so there’s no need to worry about breaking the bank to accommodate your bump! On the other hand, this is your special day after all, so we suggest investing in a bridal gown that is specifically tailored to flatter your pregnancy curves. Spending a little bit more to enjoy that perfect comfortable and flexible fit can really pay off on the big day.

Try our Ivory Lace and Silk Maternity Gown and feel the difference for your self – luxurious fabrics and expert tailoring for pregnancy will have you feeling sensational for your special day.

4) Help! How do I dress my pregnant bridesmaid?

A pregnant bridesmaid may sound like a sartorial nightmare, but actually there are some fantastic options out there, which will flatter her blossoming bump however far along she is (and they’ll look equally fantastic on her non-pregnant co-bridesmaids – score!) Our Multiway Maternity Dresses are available in soft dove grey or cornflower blue, or in a maxi length in cobalt bluemidnight blue, and are all simply perfect for bridesmaids. The empire line cut flatters all shapes and sizes, allowing plenty of room for a growing bump. But the real beauty of these dresses lies with the multiway sashes, which can be wrapped, tied, twisted and knotted in different ways to create all sorts of different but equally fabulous looks – if you like, you could even create a unique style for each bridesmaid with one miraculous dress!

My pregnancy style by PR Consultant & Fashion Writer Kerry Law

Kerry is a PR consultant and owner of KL PR + Communications. She also writes about fashion and style for a number of clients including Fashion London magazine. She is expecting her first baby this April.

I’ve even surprised myself: it’s taken seven months of pregnancy for me to finally give in and shop for maternity clothes! My growing bump, coupled with constantly tugging at my slipping waistband and too-short tops, has made me realise it’s time to invest in some proper clothing for the remaining months of this pregnancy.

I’d always been a little reluctant to do this – the words ‘maternity wear’ filled my head with images of shapeless smock dresses and baggy jeans in apologetic colours. I also wasn’t thrilled with the idea of buying a whole wardrobe of outfits that would only be worn for a matter of months.

But after being introduced to some great brands through my work, including Seraphine, I’m actually excited by the prospect of refreshing my wardrobe while being able to stick to my own personal style. Here are my pregnancy style saviours…

Over-bump skinny jeans

In my non-pregnancy state, my style tends to gravitate towards skinny jeans, tucked-in tops and whip-thin belts. My bump has forced some reassessment of that silhouette – but, surprisingly, not as much as I imagined. My black Seraphine Maternity Treggings give a great skinny trouser look and, best of all, they are super comfy with their over-the-bump band, and I balance them out with more voluminous  tops.

Stylish flats

I’m so glad that my favourite shoe type – the flat pump – is back in fashion this season. Heels can be a challenge at the best of times, and in pregnancy (when sometimes all you want is comfort) I’d rather avoid them (although my recent trip to the Brit Awards required a pair of heels, my legs did not thank me for it!). My favourite flats look sharp and were bought second hand, but the current trend means I’ll be able to pick up lots of styles on the high-street too.

Long-line tops

I’m no fan of a crop top so imagine my horror when almost all of my regular ‘to the hips’ tops and blouses began sitting just above my waistband… I’ve discovered the need for a suite of long-line tops and tunics to pair with my treggings and jeans so I’m extra pleased with my Seraphine Zip Detail Maternity Tunic which works perfectly with them. Another bonus is that the shoulder zips are perfect for breastfeeding – its dual purpose nature definitely appeals to my frugal side as I will be wearing it for several months post-birth.

Draping

Some people look great with a bodycon look during pregnancy (Seraphine fan Gwen Stefani certainly fits this camp) but I prefer a sharper look (skinny trousers, blazers) softened with draping. My floaty blouses are great at dressing my bump without being clingy or tent-like. I’ve also chosen Seraphine’s ruched maternity top to wear with blue jeans and am eyeing up all of the cowl neck tops and tunics (also great for wearing through the nursing phase).

Accessories

This is one area that doesn’t depend on how big your bump is, so I can carry on reflecting my personal style through necklaces and scarves. I’m lucky in that one of my clients is stylist Jennifer Aston of leading image consultants Aston + Hayes – she recommends that pregnant women go by the mantra of ‘big is beautiful’ in their mid and latter trimesters and not to be afraid to go for it with bold prints and accessories. She also suggests the later weeks are the best time to pep up your complexion with extra colour around the face, so I’ll be hunting out a statement necklace in my current favourite colour of acid yellow – it is almost Spring after all!

Get inspired to throw a beautiful baby shower

If you’re planning your baby shower and are after a little inspiration, then you’ve come to the right place! We’ve collected some fantastic blog posts and Pinterest boards from around the web to give you a few ideas to get you started. And we also have some beautiful maternity dresses in pink, blue and every colour in between!

To Decorate

Once you’ve decided on a theme or colour scheme, your baby shower décor is where you can really get creative! You’ll want to dress your table and decorate the rest of the party space to match, tying it all into your theme – and there is so much more to it these days that pink for a girl or blue for a boy. You could go for balloons, flowers, bunting, a combination of the three, or something completely different! The world really is your oyster.

Check out our Baby Shower Pinterest Board for some fabulous ideas and inspiration.

To Do

Just because you’re pregnant, doesn’t mean that you have to keep your feet up and twiddle your thumbs at your baby shower. It’s a great idea to have plenty of activities and games lined up to keep you and your guests busy! We love the idea of getting guests to create something together that you can keep and display in baby’s room – maybe an artwork, a book of advice (for new parents or for baby), or even a patchwork quilt (you can get a crafty friend or family member to stitch it together afterwards)!

We love these great tips and ideas from Oregon Mommy Blogger Lauren Hartmann at Babble.com.

To Eat

You’re eating for two right now (and of course your guests need to eat too), so your baby shower food should be an important part of your planning, but it can also be a really fun part! Buffet style finger food is a great option, and if you have the time, you can get really creative with how you present it! We love the idea of finger sandwiches and a fruit salad buffet.

But of course it doesn’t all have to be so virtuously healthy – we’ve found a delicious Pinterest board entirely dedicated to baby shower cupcakes! YUM!

Shop the Cherry Blossom Silk Chiffon Maternity Dress

To Drink

Your baby shower is all about you and your little one, so we recommend making it a booze-free zone. But this doesn’t mean that you all have to stick to diet coke! How about coming up with some fruity mocktails – make them really colourful and decorate with real fruit and those teeny umbrellas and your guest’s won’t even notice that they’re alcohol free! Or you could try this recipe from wholefoods blogger The Scrumptious Pumpkin and make up a big punch bowl full of delicious peach mango white iced tea.

To Give

Baby shower favours are a lovely way to say thank you to your guests for coming, and to give them a little keep sake of the day to take away with them. You could buy your favours, or with a little inspiration it’s easy to create something simple, stylish and homemade. We love popcorn based favours playing on the phrase ‘ready to pop’, or what about giving out little pots of nail varnish – pink for a girl, blue for a boy, or different colours for each guest if it’s going to be a surprise!

In need of a little more inspiration? Here’s a Pinterest board all about it!

To Wear

And last but not by any means least, you’ll want to find the perfect maternity dress to wear to your baby shower! Check out our latest spring maternity styles in the ‘New In’ section of our website. We think it’s a really cute idea for your maternity dress to match your baby – pink for a girl and blue for a boy, or if you’re keeping it as a surprise, you could dress in a gender neutral colour or pattern to keep them guessing! Here at Seraphine Maternity we have a gorgeous collection of maternity dresses in a beautiful array of colours and patterns, and they’re all designed to flatter your changing curves to help you to feel fabulous on your special day!

As a working woman, you will have mastered the art of business dressing. You look sharp in a suit, and your don’t-mess-with-me power dresses never fail to make a good impression. You may have a carefully cultivated capsule wardrobe full of colour coordinated pieces to mix, match and accessorise, but when your body is about to embark on the crazy nine month journey that is pregnancy, it may be a good idea to sit down and have a wardrobe re-think.

But don’t be put off! The good news is that whether you’re pregnant or not, the rules of fashion are essentially the same, with just a few minor adjustments to flatter your changing shape.

Here is a list of the top 5 most important things to know about dressing your bump for the office:

1)      The Suit

Invest in a good quality maternity suit at the beginning of your pregnancy, and it will see you stylishly through your full nine months.

When shopping for a maternity blazer it’s a good idea to keep certain things in mind. Firstly, look for stretch fabrics such as jersey or soft Ponte di Roma – this is a piece that ought to flatter your figure throughout pregnancy, so it needs to be able to grow with you. Secondly, the cut should be tailored in towards your empire line, which, as your pregnancy progresses, will become your new natural waist.

When it comes to skirts and trousers, the most important consideration to make, is whether you want them to fit over or under your bump as it grows. There is no right or wrong answer here; it’s all about what feels most comfortable to you!

2)      The Dress

A small collection of flattering maternity dresses in different colours and patterns can go a very long way to transforming your office style during pregnancy. The best way to flatter your changing figure is to choose dresses that focus on the empire line. This will help to define your new shape, allowing plenty of room for your growing curves, and drawing attention to the slimmest part of your body. Flowing A-line dresses will be incredibly comfortable, and don’t be afraid to flaunt your changing curves in a figure hugging bodycon style!

3)      The Shirt

When it comes to shirts and blouses, it really is important to get a good fit, and investing in a maternity shirt is one way of guaranteeing this throughout your pregnancy. A good quality maternity shirt will be made in soft stretch cotton that is kind on sensitive skin and will adapt to your changing curves. Yet again, it’s all about the empire line, and it’s a good idea to look for a shirt that is cut long, to ensure that your curves are kept neatly covered at every stage of your pregnancy.

They will also help you to keep your capsule maternity wardrobe looking fresh. Add a printed scarf around your neck to jazz up a plain maternity dress, or define your shape with a simple empire belt.
