Maternity style & pregnancy yoga – by Pollyanna Woodward

Pollyanna is a television presenter, most recently on The Gadget Show. She and golfer fiancé Paul Casey are currently expecting their first child.

I don’t think I could ever fully prepare myself for impending motherhood. Even now as it looms closer, I still feel pretty overwhelmed by it all, but at the same time I’m also really excited! I will be very honest and admit that I’m not one of those mums-to-be, that has fully embraced pregnancy and is completely at one with it. The changes my body has gone through and is still going through, (that I have no control over!) have taken me completely by surprise. The ever increasing dress sizes, the dry skin, the tiredness and the dreaded ‘baby brain’ (!) are all aspects that I have found really hard to accept, especially being a bit of an adrenalin junkie! But knowing what my body is creating, has left me in complete awe of the gift us ladies have. It never ceases to amaze me what is actually happening, especially when I’m feeling it kick and move, it makes accepting my ever changing body an easier pill to swallow!

Throughout my pregnancy so far, style has been one of my biggest challenges, and I know this seems to be a common complaint with women across the land! To be honest I think I’ve only just found my comfort zone and realised what works for me….. long flowing maternity maxi dresses with under bust gathering – still feminine, comfortable and beautiful, but brilliant at disguising all my “unsightly” bits, whilst enhancing my best bit ….my bump. Finding these dresses had been a huge struggle until I recently discovered Seraphine ….. It was one of those eureka moments. I could kick myself for finding them so late, but as they say, better late than never! I think during pregnancy that’s one of the most important factors in feeling good; finding what suits YOU! Our shapes during this time are so individual, you just need to wear what makes you feel great and comfortable.

I have also started yoga, as I am unable to workout like I normally would, so I decided to try and help my body remain supple and strong – not only for baby but also to help recovery after birth and to be as fit and healthy a Mum as I can.  Yoga seemed like a great way to do this and I must admit I have found it extremely beneficial. I try to do it 3, sometimes 4 times a week if I’m not too tired – it is relaxing, soothing and does help with strength, but isn’t grueling like other workouts. And let’s face it; as a mum-to-be just being up and about is tiring! I decided to do it via a fantastic DVD from Tara Lee, as I have been travelling a lot during my pregnancy and this allows me to do it wherever I am in the world. I got the trilogy so I can do post natal yoga and yoga with our new arrival too! I really do think this is something I will continue, as I found the benefits so helpful, and as mums-to-be will know, anything that makes you feel great and relaxed is a bonus.

Really thrilled to be blogging for Seraphine – in my next blog, I’ll be sharing some of my top baby tech purchases, some of which are essential in terms of baby’s health and well being and others which are just lots of fun!

Create A Capsule Maternity Wardrobe for a Long Weekend in St Tropez!

A mystical date for many cultures around the world; this Saturday the 21st of June is officially summer! The sun will be at its highest point, we’ll be enjoying the longest and lightest day of the year, and here at Seraphine we’ve decided to mark the occasion by planning our summer capsule wardrobes!

Yep, from now until mid-September we are officially in summer holiday season, so it only makes sense to be ready to jet off for a bit of sun, sea and sand at a moment’s notice – you know, just in case!

So what’s the Secret to creating a Stylish Capsule Wardrobe?

Planning your summer capsule maternity wardrobe is all about choosing basic essential pieces that will coordinate well together, and introducing a few statement pieces in accent colours and patterns. The idea is to be able to mix and match all of your styles to create new looks every day, without exceeding your luggage allowance at the airport!

During pregnancy this clever fashion fix is especially important, as however much you’d like to, it simply isn’t practical to replace your entire wardrobe with maternity clothes. But if you invest in a capsule maternity wardrobe, you will always have stylish pieces to wear that coordinate perfectly!

Suggestions for St Tropez:

So let’s put together an example for a long weekend in St Tropez… hey, a girl can dream right?

First we’ll need some basic bottoms – we love the Blue Denim Maternity Mini Shorts for all purpose day wear, and a good pair of white maternity jeans can be dressed up or down, as can a maternity maxi skirt.

Next we choose some tops. A few basic maternity camisoles in neutral colours will be invaluable, then you can mix it up with more interesting patterned styles like our fabulous Nautical Nursing Top!

Once the basics are sorted, you can start having fun choosing statement pieces that will make your style really stand out. A light maternity day dress is a great idea for easy elegance, and a stunning maternity maxi dress is the perfect style to transition from day to night. Don’t forget a cosy cover up for the evenings and a glamorous maternity swimsuit for the beach. And a striking patterned kaftan is a capsule wardrobe star buy: You can use it as a chic cover up on the beach, style it with shorts and a maternity bikini top for an afternoon lazing on the deck of your private yacht, or wear it as a glamorous tunic over cropped trousers for an evening on the town!

Glow Like a Goddess – Radiant Skin, Glossy Hair and a Gleaming Smile

Glow like a goddess through your pregnancy with these simple hints and tips for radiant skin, glossy hair and gleaming white teeth!

We’ve all heard of that radiant glow that appears during the early stages of pregnancy – the one that will have friends and family commenting on how well you look, while you and your partner exchange sneaky glances because you have a secret that nobody else in the world knows!

Well why not give your natural glow a little boost with these simple pregnancy-safe tips:

Radiant Skin

pregnancy glow tips

There are no shock revelations or secret shortcuts here (well maybe just one, but we’ll get to that soon enough)! The main way to ensure radiant skin fit for a goddess, is to lead an equally saintly healthy lifestyle. That means drinking plenty of water and eating good anti-oxidant rich foods like grapefruit, watermelon and broccoli to flush out toxins. Ideally you should also be getting plenty of exercise to boost oxygen flow, and sleeping at least 7 hours a night to banish dark circles around your eyes.

When it comes to your skincare routine, every goddess is different, so all we can really advise here is that you find a regime that works for you and your skin and then stick to it – though of course through the summer it’s always important to protect your skin with a good quality SPF30 sun cream with both UVA and UVB protection. You may find that your skin becomes more sensitive during pregnancy, so it’s a good idea to steer clear of heavy duty products, opting for the gentler ones instead.

Sneaky Fix

And here is that secret shortcut we mentioned earlier: If you’re in need of an instant boost – before posing for the camera at a special event or heading into an important meeting – try sucking on an ice cube! This will chill all of the cells in your cheeks and lips, boosting circulation to your face and providing a plumper, rosier complexion! Works like a charm!

Glossy Hair

For glossy, goddess-worthy locks, there are just a few simple changes you can make to your hair care routine, which will make a world of difference. First of all, it’s no news that heat is damaging to your hair, but you may not know how easy it is to counteract the effects: Finish your shower with a quick cool rinse, then make sure to use the cool shot setting on your hair dryer while blow drying and you’ll be left with smooth and shiny hair! Another easy change to make is to switch your nylon hairbrush for natural bristles – these are gentler and less likely to cause split ends, and they work to distribute the good natural oils through your hair.

Top Tip

Did you know that different hair colours behave differently? Lighter hair is more porous, and will be more prone to build-up, so blondes are at their glossiest when their hair is freshly washed. Whereas those with darker hair are at their best with well-conditioned second-day hair! Learn how your hair behaves and you’ll be able to wash wisely for your next big event.

Gleaming Smile

Aside from the obvious (brush twice a day and don’t forget to floss), the main message when it comes to keeping your teeth pearly white is to eat plenty of crunchy fruit and veg like cucumber, celery, broccoli and carrots – sounds like some crunchy crudités and hummus is in order! In fact some fruits like apples are particularly good tooth whiteners, as they are crunchy and are known to contain malic acid – a chemical actually used in commercial teeth whitening products to dissolve stains!

Natural Whitening

Strawberries are another great source of that miraculous whitening agent malic acid, and can actually be used to make a fantastic organic home whitening treatment!

  • Mash 1 strawberry together with ½ teaspoon of baking soda.
  • Apply the mix to your teeth with a soft toothbrush
  • Leave to work for 5 minutes
  • Brush thoroughly with toothpaste to remove the berry mix
  • Rinse
  • Repeat up to once a week for a permanent pearly gleam

Fashion

Of course once you’ve achieved your goddess-like glow, there’s no better way to show it off than in a striking maternity maxi dress! Then complete the look with jewelled sandals and our Shimmering Platinum Waterfall Maternity Cardigan for a truly iridescent look!

Seraphine Founder Cecile modeling her favourite ShoeTherapy Styles

When it comes to seasonal shoes, you simply can’t beat a good pair of ballet pumps for an all round, all season comfort and style winner. When flip flops are falling off, sandals are rubbing in all the wrong places and heels are simply not an option, your brilliant ballet pumps have always got your back!

Shop the Black Studded Loafers

And in the case of our stylish ShoeTherapy flats, they literally have “got your back”! These clever little shoes are ergonomically designed to improve your posture, boost your circulation and ease pregnancy back ache!

Shop the Red Ballet Pumps

Seraphine founder and creative director Cecile developed the range along with acclaimed French orthopoedist Doctor Jean Douhaire during her second pregnancy, filling a gap in the market for fashion focused orthopoedic shoes. Now expectant mums everywhere swear by them!  Cecile’s ShoeTherapy favourites are the Red Ballerina Pumps and the Studded Loafers!

Being able to offer a fashionable looking shoe that has real health benefits is very exciting. The creation of ShoeTherapy meant a lot for me, as I myself have experienced the discomfort of back ache and how incapacitating it can be.

Belts

Shop Colourful Maternity Belts

During pregnancy you could be forgiven for assuming that your stylish fashion belts will be taking a back seat until well after baby arrives. But we beg to differ! You can still rock all the same stylish belt trends as before, you’ll just be wearing them a little higher than usual.

As your bump begins to grow, the slimmest part of your body – the bit you want to highlight with a belt – will migrate northwards from your natural waist to your empire line. So in actual fact, a well placed maternity belt in a contrasting colour can be a surprisingly slimming finishing touch to make your outfit pop!

All of our maternity belts are designed to be extra adjustable so they will grow with your changing curves. Our Leather Skinny Maternity Belts in sexy red or cheeky yellow provide the perfect flash of colour, and are extra long, including plenty of size settings.  And our Elasticated Leather Maternity Belts in soft mint green or black are made in 100% elasticated leather – going even further towards the ultimate flexible fit to see you fashionably through your pregnancy!

Bags

Shop Baby Changing Bags

Having a baby is the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a brand new bag! You’re going to need to invest in a baby changing bag anyway, and wouldn’t you know it; tote bags are a huge trend this season – style win!

Remember; just because it’s a changing bag, doesn’t mean it has to be ‘mumsie’ –  just check out our selection of fashion forward Storksak changing bags loved by stylish celeb mums like Angelina Jolie! These are designed to look just like your regular designer handbags, and allow you to cart about all of your baby bits in style! Or if you’re after something a little more playful, why not try one of our gorgeous Pink Lining changing bags. They’re cute, colourful and put a super stylish spin on the more traditional baby changing bag styles.

So get out there and enjoy the sun this weekend and make sure that you and your bump are accessorised to the max!

Arianna Huffington: How to juggle motherhood and career

Seraphine Founder Cecile Reinaud shares her experience of meeting Arianna Huffington, the media mogul behind The Huffington Post, and the lessons learnt from this fascinating role model.

Shop Arianna's Book

As a mother and entrepreneur I am always on the lookout for strong female role models who inspire me to strive and juggle motherhood with my career goals. This week I have had the privilege to meet one of America’s most influential personalities, the founder of The Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington. She came to present her new book at the business forum Business O Feminin and I want to share with you her inspiring life journey and the advice she offers on how to succeed and achieve a sustainable work life balance; the subject of her new book.

Watch Arianna talk about her wake up call moment

In her book “Thrive; The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Happier Life”, Arianna talks through her own struggles to have it all and balance family life with work. She reflects on the manic way she lived her life in the past, and challenges of raising her two daughters. She denounces our culture of over-work, which often leaves us no time to nurture our bodies and minds. She also urges us to disconnect from our screens and the incessant flow of information and social media news! Arianna’s book is full of fascinating research and inspiring philosophical quotes that draw on ancient wisdom, and in the end it recommends four essential qualities for a happier life: wellbeing, a capacity to wonder, wisdom and giving.

Shop Seraphine Maternity Work Wear

Meeting Arianna was incredibly inspiring, and the passion and positive energy she exudes is simply mesmerising. I can’t recommend reading her book highly enough! As mothers, the challenge of juggling all our objectives and being a good and loving parent is a daily labour of love. With Arianna’s advice, you’ll find a great road map to feeling more serene and content with your life.

Getting into Maternity Wear – By Ana Santi, Deputy Editor at Drapers

Ana Santi is the deputy editor of Drapers magazine and has worked in the fashion industry for over eight years. She is currently expecting her first child and plans to look fabulous whilst pregnant. All the images used are of Ana wearing our Dove Grey Multiway Maternity Dress at her sister’s wedding.

Ana Santi - Seraphine maternity

It was the water cooler that did it. Whilst refilling my glass, a fellow officer worker did a strange double-take at my stomach: an expression somewhere between surprise and embarrassment. “That was one hearty bowl of pasta she must have scoffed down at lunch” were probably her thoughts.

In fact, I was 21 weeks pregnant and, jeans aside, I was still wearing my normal clothes. But I knew then that it wouldn’t be long before I needed to buy new stuff, and the thought scared me.

I’m a fashion journalist, so what I wear matters. I also like tailored clothes. Two factors that, when combined, don’t make for easy, carefree maternity dressing.

So I decided to consult my pregnant friends and those who already had children. They told me: Invest in skinny jeans. Avoid skinny jeans. Buy normal clothes a few sizes bigger. Don’t buy normal clothes a few sizes bigger. Buy cheap maternitywear – you’ll be sick of the sight of it after the birth. Invest in quality.

At first, the mixed messages were overwhelming, but I soon realised that they made perfect sense. These are friends with their own, individual styles. They dress to suit their tastes and body shapes. They like to – and do – look good, and did so whilst pregnant, but without altering their pre-pregnancy style.

From then on, I actually started to get quite excited about a maternity wardrobe and showing off my bump in a proper pregnant way. Whether I’ll regret it later on, I’ve decided to go for quality (I may have a second child later on) and buy several key pieces for each season. Any excuse to buy new clothes…

Ana Santi wears a Seraphine maternity dress

But the first thing I did was go through my existing wardrobe. I counted two short, loose dresses that I can wear with tights right from winter through to summer. I found, right at the bottom of a drawer, another short black dress that I haven’t worn for years (don’t ask me why, it’s still pretty) with a sort of empire line (but without being billowy; silhouettes that are too loose-fitting can actually make you look much bigger than you are) that will be perfect for smart work occasions. My legs are probably my best feature, so I realised that shorter lengths on skirts and dresses and skinny jeans would be good investments.

Still in my wardrobe, I saw that a floral print skirt with an elasticated waistband would be perfect for spring, as will several loose fitting tops for summer. One friend pointed out the brilliance of blazersthey maintain a fitted silhouette and you can still fit into them. I have a couple of those in my wardrobe.

I then made a list of clothes to buy. I’ve invested in three pairs of skinny jeans: black for winter, grey for all seasons and cropped white for spring and summer. I’m considering buying just normal blue jeans too…

I also bought a smart white shirt and a short grey skirt, which is really versatile and can be worn with or without tights. That’s it so far (underwear aside, of course).

Also on the list but not yet purchased (buy in stages as you don’t know how big you’ll get how quickly) are stretch jersey or cotton tops. I’ll be buying these as soon as the weather allows me to put away my jumpers and the bump gets too big for existing tops. Figure-hugging maxi dresses and a pair of shorts are also part of the summer spree.

Finally, don’t just think about clothes. Flat shoes are on-trend right now and will be next season too, so invest in those. Several of my friends swore by great pedicures during pregnancy. And experiment with make-up and jewellery.

But the most important thing is to be yourself. If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you care enough about how you look during your pregnancy, so have fun with it. My bump won’t flatter a jumpsuit this summer, so I’m considering some dungarees instead. Every cloud…

This is the second time Holly’s rocked a Seraphine dress on the programme, and she seems to have a lot of love for light blue shades, as last time we saw her looking fabulous in our Blue Knot Front Maternity Dress (the blue version of The Duchess of Cambridge’s favourite pink maternity dress).

Holly looked stunning in the Seraphine style – the asymmetric empire line flattered her figure perfectly, and the striking colour combination of deep Persian blue and light aquamarine made her golden hair and complexion simply glow!

Super Model Doutzen Loves Seraphine Maternity Maxi Dresses

Doutzen Kroes has done it again! This time the stunning Dutch super model and firm Seraphine fan enjoyed a family day out at the park, looking fantastic in another Seraphine maternity maxi dress!

The expectant mum took some time out on Tuesday to relax with her DJ husband Sunnery James and their three year old son Phyllon Joy Gorré in a park in the trendy Tribeca area of New York. The family looked to be making the most of the sun, and enjoying their last few months as a trio before Phyllon becomes a big brother with the arrival of a brand new baby girl!

The dress Doutzen wore is our Aqua Draped Maternity Maxi Dress – the perfect choice for a sunny afternoon; it’s stylish, flattering and incredibly easy to wear. The vibrant aqua shade of this dress worked perfectly with Doutzen’s blond hair and creamy complexion, and the cross-over empire line design made the most of her blossoming pregnancy curves!

Doutzen let her maternity maxi do the talking, styling it simply with gladiator sandals, a tan over-the-shoulder bag, a pair of delicate gold necklaces and a few tribal cuff bracelets. She continued the minimal look with a fresh face and her blond locks pulled back in a messy bun. The overall effect was simple and elegant with a relaxed boho twist.

This is the second Seraphine maternity maxi dress Doutzen has donned, as she was spotted earlier this month looking fantastic in our Navy Blue Crochet Back Maternity Maxi Dress. And she’s not the only stylish celebrity mum to love our maternity maxi dresses. In fact they have rather a devoted celebrity fan club including Jessica Alba, Alyson Hannigan, Zara PhillipsDania Ramirez and most recently Christina Aguilera!

Post your pics on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram and don’t forget to tag us @SeraphineLtd on Twitter and @Seraphinematernity on Instagram and #fashionablypregnant.

And while you’re at it, head over to our #justforlove photo gallery. For every photo you post to our gallery, we’ll give $1 to charity!
