R&B Icon Alicia Keys Dresses up her Seraphine Denim

R&B icon Alicia Keys is a seriously stylish expectant mama, so we were thrilled recently to see her stepping out in a pair of Seraphine maternity jeans!

Nearing the end of her pregnancy now, Alicia looked as stunning as ever in our Indigo Slim Fit Skinny Maternity Jeans at a book signing to promote her new children’s book Blue Moon: From the Journals of Mama Mae & Lee Lee.

The singer appeared at the Barnes & Noble store in Tribeca, New York to read from her new book and to sign copies, and her chic denim ensemble was perfect for meeting and greeting her fans.

The star styled our under bump maternity jeans with a simple black maternity top, high-shine brown ankle boots and a two-tone leather jacket; completing the look with a sleek up-do, hoop earrings and a glamorous splash of red lipstick – mastering the art of smart casual.

Alicia and her hip hop husband Swizz Beatz already have a 4 year old son Egypt, and are expecting the new addition to their family this New Year’s Eve! With a new children’s book out, her 6th studio album due for release in 2015, a young family to take care of and a new baby on the way, Alicia is still managing to look incredible – forgive us for saying it, but – This girl is on fire!

Thank Heavens For Good Maternity Clothes! – by Rebecca Wilcox

Rebecca is a regular reporter on BBC 1’s Watchdog and a well-known consumer journalist who has worked on many and varied programmes ranging from Your Money Their Tricks, to a regular spot on This Morning, and presenting the beauty segment on Gok Wan’s How to Look Good Naked! She lives in London with her husband Jim and their toddler Benji, and the family are expecting a new addition in March.

I am lying on the kitchen floor with my two year old throwing pasta at my head and jumping around in fits of giggles with a ball up his t-shirt shouting that he too has a baby in his tummy. Every time I attempt to move from my prone and vulnerable position as a food target on the floor he rushes over with a mock serious expression, “No Mummy,” he says, “You need to sleep, you’re growing a baby. Lie. Down.” And I thought telling him I was pregnant with his younger sibling would make life easier. Ha! Later whilst picking the toddler tea from my hair I started to think on how my first pregnancy was so different. First time around I was a Princess. I positively floated everywhere on a cloud of happy hormones with my yoga toned perfect bump dressed in a variety of silky dry-clean-only clothes. After that initial first trimester of inevitable nausea and back-ne (who knew being pregnant would give you teenage skin on your back??) I had felt invincible and powerful, a vessel of future life to be admired everywhere she went.

Fabulous maternity wrap dresses

This time around pregnancy has been very different, with a two year old in tow there’s no easy relaxed afternoons with a possible nap and a full night’s sleep to look forward to. I am now a little irritated by first pregnancy me, “Wake up!” I want to shout, “Won’t be like this next time around!” There’ll be no yoga to soothe the mind and smooth the bump, no silky stainable fabrics to waft around in, no compliments on that pregnancy glow – for who could possibly find my ‘glow’ under the layers of sallow sleep-deprived skin that I no longer have the time to hide with make-up. First time around my gym-honed stomach kept its shape for ages, I had been desperate to show a little round tummy that would proclaim to the world: “I’m pregnant, hooray! Now spoil me rotten.” Well I got my wish this time around as I ballooned to a 6 month sized bump by week 5! Seemingly in an instant my normal clothes were no longer an option, a fact that became all too clear when my skinny jeans gave up and popped a button violently and loudly during a work meeting. “Too many wheat grass shots?” smirked my producer. No, just a teeny, tiny foetus and, of course, A LOT of cheese.

Comfy maternity style

So for my second I’ve gone ‘maternity’ early in every sense of the word, not only am I showing early but all my nine months of symptoms from the first time started within weeks of seeing that familiar blue line on my test. Back-ache, exhaustion, spots, my hips expanding – some of these things waited for labour last time but now they’re joining me for the full 40 week gamut. Thank heavens for good maternity clothes – the fabulous Seraphine wrap dresses, their ridiculously comfortable stretchy maternity jeans and Seraphine’s flattering maternity jumpers have got me through those times when I feel more lumpen than luscious. In my mum’s day it was all tent dresses and hiding your growing form beneath layers of bows and fabric so I feel really lucky to see that clothing designers now want to stylishly celebrate our burgeoning bumps not conceal them. My son even commented on one outfit saying “Pretty mummy” before launching himself at me with the inevitable yoghurty fingers – future note: always wear washable fabrics. And I certainly find some comfort in knowing I can still look like myself whilst pregnant, even if there’s a little more to me this time around.

Find Your NYC Style – Are you a SoHo Mama or a Brooklyn Babe?

New York is one of the true fashion capitals of the world: It’s home to the glamorous, the quirky, the fun loving and the fashionable, and each neighbourhood has its own distinct personality. But where would you and your style fit into the NYC fashion milieu?

Soho maternity style

The ultra fashionable SoHo district is one of the most stylish shopping hubs in the city. Home to big name fashion houses as well as glamorous independent boutiques, this is the premier choice for a day of serious retail therapy.  A stylish Soho mama is always on top of the trends, and knows how to flatter her shape.

For a shopping spree in Soho, style our Blue & Black Striped Cowl Neck Maternity Tunic  with our Faux Leather Detail Maternity Treggings.

hipster maternity style

A hipster haven; Brooklyn is home to all things alternative and edgy. Food here is amazing – made with flavours that are globally inspired, and ingredients that are locally grown. And when it comes to fashion, the hipster mamas have mastered the art of quirky cool.

Team our floaty Floral Print Maternity Dress with coloured tights, boots and a big woolly scarf to walk the hipster walk in style.

Wall Street Maternity Style

Right at the heart of the financial district; there’s nothing like the buzz of Wall Street – where fortunes can be made, lost, traded and won back all in the course of half an hour! If you like to live life in the fast lane this is without a doubt the place to be!

Work a sleek professional polish in our Black Roll-Over Maternity Skirt, teamed with the White Secret Support Maternity Vest and our Black Super Stretch Maternity Blazer. Tell the Wolf to stand aside –  The Fox of Wall Street has arrived!

Greenwich Village Maternity Style

The leafy meandering streets of Greenwich Village have inspired artists, writers and other bohemian spirits for decades. Defying the rigid grid structure that dominates the rest of the city, this is the perfect setting for a relaxing Sunday stroll.

Opt for a romantic floaty dress like our Midnight Blue Tiered Maternity Dress , and pair it with tights, boots and some dreamy bohemian accessories to look the part in the Village.

Sporty maternity style

Whether you’re into basketball, baseball, hockey or American football, world class sports is not hard to find in New York – and Madison Square Garden is a great place to start! Catch a Knicks game, or watch the New York Rangers in action on the ice!

Combat the cold NYC winter with our Black Maternity Puffer Jacket . This sleek and sporty style will keep you and your bump cosy, rocking a chic après ski vibe. Pair it with our Black Roll Neck Knitted Nursing Jumper and skinny jeans to style it out at the big game.

Sleeping for Two: Seraphine PJs & a Bump Nest Pregnancy Pillow

With all the excitement and anticipation that comes with pregnancy (not to mention the hormones involved), it’s little wonder that getting enough sleep can be a challenge when you’re expecting.

Sleep can be illusive at the best of times, but during pregnancy, your little bundle of joy will find all kinds of ways to keep you up at night – even before they are born! To begin with, there’s hormones & morning sickness to contend with. When you reach the second trimester, you may be suffering with heartburn or indigestion. And by the third trimester you could have baby pushing on your bladder every half hour, aches and pains all over and a huge bump to manoeuvre about!

So what’s an expectant mum to do? What’s the secret to a good night’s sleep?… Well we don’t have all the answers, but we do know 2 things that might just help:

Seraphine Pyjamas

With a growing bump, your usual PJs may not be cutting it any more – too hot, too tight, not soft enough etc – so the perfect pair of maternity pyjamas could make all the difference in your quest for a peaceful night. Look for styles made in soft natural fibres like cotton or bamboo, that won’t feel tight across your curves. One of our lacy nursing nighties could be a stylish option, or if you’re more of a PJs kinda girl, you’ll love our Bamboo Lounge Maternity Pyjamas, which are perfect for the colder season!

Bump Nest Pregnancy Pillow

Once you’ve got your pregnancy pyjamas down, it’s time to turn your attention to your pillow. Many women find that with a growing bump, a regular pillow simply doesn’t provide the right kind of support. If this is the case, we’d like to introduce you to the Bump Nest Pregnancy Pillow. This full body wrap around pillow provides the perfect support for your bump and back, and comes in a range of cute colours & patterns. It’s fully machine washable and made to last; retaining its original fluffiness through all of your pregnancies. Designed to relieve all the typical pregnancy aches and pains, a Bump Nest pregnancy pillow will help you to drift off naturally into a deep & peaceful sleep, leaving you refreshed and ready to face your day. Buy yours now on Nordstrom.

Get Inspired to Throw a Beautiful Winter Baby Shower

If you’re planning a beautiful baby shower this winter and are looking for a little inspiration, then you’ve come to the right place! We’ve collected some fantastic blog posts and Pinterest boards from around the web to give you a few ideas. And when it comes to your baby shower outfit, we have some gorgeous maternity dresses to choose from in pink, blue and every colour in between!

To Decorate

Baby shower decor

Winter is a wonderful time to throw a baby shower; what with the holidays and wintery weather, this time of year offers plenty of scope for creative décor! You could create a magical winter wonderland, or pick a colour scheme like this beautiful silver and gold shower featured on The Little Umbrella. And we can’t get enough of this Bundle up Baby woodland theme (with free printables available to download) featured on The Hostess with the Mostess blog.

To Do

Baby Shower Activities

We love the idea of having a few craft stations set up at the party, that guests can circulate around in their own time. How about setting up a onesie biscuit decorating area like the one at this baby shower featured on The Little Umbrella. And we love this idea from the One Little Minute blog, of getting your guests to hand paint wooden blocks – creating a beautiful one-of-a-kind set for baby to play with and keep!

To Eat

You’re eating for two right now (and of course guests tend to get hungry too), so the catering should be a big part of your planning. We think it’s a nice idea to keep things simple with buffet style finger food, and to satisfy any sweet cravings, just check out Patricia Estrada’s Pinterest board entirely devoted to baby shower cupcakes – YUM!

Baby Shower Catering

To Drink

Remember, booze-free doesn’t have to be boring! We think a baby shower is the perfect opportunity to sample some delicious mocktails! So put your mixology skills to the test with these fabulously fruity Preggatinis!

To Give

Baby Shower Favors

At the end of the party, baby shower favours are a great way to thank your guests for coming. Send them home with a little something to remember the day, or even something sweet to eat like these ready-to-pop popcorn favours!

To Wear

And last, but by no means least – what are you going to wear?? Your baby shower is the perfect excuse to show off your blossoming pregnancy curves to your friends and family –  so finding the perfect baby shower maternity dress is key!

Woman & Home Fashion Editor Lynda Bell’s Maternity Fashion Tips

My name is Lynda, I’m a fashion editor and stylist, living in London and I’ve been married for 5 years. I’ve been working as a stylist for the last 10 years and am currently happily settled as Fashion Editor at woman&home magazine. My life has moved onto the next level since I found out in August that we are expecting our first baby and I am now 21 weeks pregnant!

I wanted to share with you my plan to not lose myself or my style thanks to my expanding waistline and changing life!

My standard style is quite minimal; I like asymmetrical shapes, slim-line jeans, layering, and I love a stripy top! You can see a blog post about my style B.P (before pregnancy) here. My waistline started expanding around 13 weeks and I treated myself to a couple of loose fitted shirts like the Seraphine Sheer Grey Maternity Blouse which I’m wearing with my leather panel leggings.

Lynda Bell's maternity style in stripes

I’m really looking forward to growing a ‘real’ bump (mine still looks like I’ve just over-indulged at the weekend!) and I’ll be showing it off in fitted jersey tops and dresses… I’ve got my eye on a few already like this amazing bodycon maternity dress that Gwen Stefani wore, and the gorgeous Graphic Maternity Dress!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve picked up a couple of maternity fashion tips I’d love to share with you:

  • Buy a few bits every few months. I was pained to invest in a whole new wardrobe that didn’t feel necessary or ‘me’ so I chose to mix in my B.P clothing with slow changes. Also – intermittent additions are more exciting to get you through this challenging time! Pep up your wardrobe with something fresh every once in a while – this gives you the chance to try on your regular clothes again to see what fits, and what can be used… What didn’t suit you in month 3 might actually look great in month 6.

  • Don’t forget your signature style. I’m a magpie by nature and I love anything with embellishment and interesting details, so I’ve bookmarked this adorable Seraphine sequin cardigan which I’ll wear through maternity, nursing and beyond! I’ll wear it with my staple jeans as well as a special layer over an LBD. Adapt your maternity clothing to parallel your style – if you live in jeans, invest in some that you can enjoy with a bump!

 Lynda Bell's maternity style

  • Buy a pair of pregnancy leggings. I love this bamboo style which is hypoallergenic, and I’ll get a pair in black and grey to see me through the Winter.

  • Treat yourself. I always treat myself to a great pair of shoes or a statement bag (that doesn’t matter what size you are!). I will be tidying away my heels for lower kitten styles (thank god they are back in the shops!), loafers and cool trainers.

  • Grooming! Get a blow-dry, a manicure, wear some bright lipstick whatever makes you feel more glamorous when your changing body is out of your control.

Winter Skin: Protect Your Glow with Fabulous Natural Face Masks!

With the colder weather set to take hold, right now is the perfect time to treat your skin to a hydrating face mask! The colder temperatures, wind and rain will tend to dry out your skin, and those pesky pregnancy hormones will have your skin behaving in all kinds of strange and unexpected ways, so finding 15 minutes to lay back and relax with a face mask can be really beneficial!

DIY Masks to Make Yourself

Pampering yourself with a relaxing facial doesn’t have to cost the earth – in fact it doesn’t have to cost anything at all! You don’t even have to change out of your comfy maternity pyjamas, as you can make fantastic face masks out of things you probably already have in your kitchen. And the best part is: you made it yourself so you know that it’s all natural, with no nasty chemicals.

Avocado face mask

For Oily Blemish-Prone Skin

We love these do-it-yourself facials from Womansday.com – they have something for everyone and a recipe for every skin type! But our favourite for blemish-prone skin has got to be the Lift & Tighten mask, made with fresh lemon juice and plain yoghurt – simple, natural and incredibly effective!

For Dry Skin

As the weather turns colder, it’s more important than ever to ensure that your skin is well hydrated. This replenishing avocado and honey mask we found on About.com has only two ingredients, and looks to us like the perfect little hydrating pick-me-up!

For All Skin Types

The cooling cucumber mask from this list of natural recipes by Wellnessmama is designed to cool and calm your skin. Plug in your ipod, and lay back with this cooling mask to unwind at the end of a busy day.

Natural Masks to Buy

Natural face masks by Sephora and Lush

If you’d rather leave the messy bit to the professionals, there are plenty of places you can go to find all natural face masks that cut out the nasty additives and will be gentle on your skin. LUSH  is good for more than just bath bombs… they have a fantastic range of face masks which are all natural, organic and environmentally friendly.

For a really deep cleanse, we love the Seaweed Ionic Clay Mask from the Body Shop. The naturally negatively charged ions in the clay act like a magnet to draw out all the impurities from your pores – a very clever cleanser!

And for a bit of fun, why not try a natural fibre face mask from Sephora. With no messy application, you simply place the fibre mask over your face, lay back and let it absorb!

Scandi Fashion Maven Sanna Stays True to Her Style

Sanna Buckhoj is a Swedish graphic designer with a passion for fashion! She lives in London with her fiancé  Martin, and runs her own business very Buckhoj. The couple are expecting their first baby in January! Sanna is determined to stick to her own personal style throughout pregnancy – and we quizzed her on how she is managing it.

1)      What inspires your personal style?

My colleagues! I share an office with three super stylish women who are all in the fashion industry, and they dress in such an inspiring way. I also read blogs that inspire me! Elin Kling is my muse.

2)      Sum up your look in 3 words.

I would say my style is: Scandinavian, clean-cut & basic (but teamed with funky accessories and fab bags!)

Sanna's pre-pregnancy style

3)      Has it been easy to adapt your style for pregnancy?

Well at the beginning i was able to use a lot of of my old clothes, but since my bump began to grow, discovering Seraphine has made it so easy to adapt my style! I just bought some new maternity denims – I love the Premium Under Bump Maternity Skinny Jeans and the Black Peplum Maternity Blazer. I team them with a cashmere sweater or a tight t-shirt.

It’s been really important for me to try to keep my style and not change it just because I’m pregnant.

4)      We are confiscating your makeup bag – you’re allowed to keep three essential cosmetics. What do you choose?

Easy: My Mineral foundation from Bare Minerals, and my eyebrow pencil & mascara from YSL. DONE!

5)      What’s your favourite Seraphine piece?

Definitely my maternity jeans. My second skin every day.

Sanna's maternity style in Seraphine

6)      What’s the funniest thing that’s happened so far this pregnancy?

Hmm… I threw up at Barclays bank while setting up my business account. Easy to seem professional… nja!

7)      Do you have a favourite non-maternity style that you’ll be wearing even after you can’t get the zip up?

My black wool coat from Filippa K. It looks fab even if I won’t be able to close it!

8)      What food can you not get enough of right now?

Sandwiches! OMG, I munch at least five a day. And apples… loads and loads of apples.

9)      What has been your favourite moment of pregnancy so far?

Our first ultrasound. When me and my fiancé got to meet our Junior for the first time he/she danced for us! Amazing to be a part of.

10)   Tell us your idea of happiness?

My idea of happiness is to enjoy your everyday life. We can all enjoy a holiday, but what goes on everyday is far more important. To love your work & have inspiring colleagues, come home to a welcoming and cosy flat and close contact with friends & family. Since I met my fiancé, of course he is now my main source of happiness – and my Junior!
