Meet Chelsey Oliver, The Mama Behind Seraphine Maternity

Chelsey Oliver is the Creative & Brand Director at Seraphine. A mama of 2, stepmother of 1 and now expecting her third baby later this year, Chelsey has over 15 years’ experience designing maternity clothes.

When it comes to bumps, babies & the journey into motherhood, it’s safe to say that Chelsey knows a thing or two…. We sat down with her to talk pregnancy, motherhood & designing clothes to make life easier for mamas.

First – congratulations on your pregnancy! How are you feeling?

Thank you! I’m currently 32 weeks along and my little ones are 18 months & 3 years old, so as you can probably imagine, it’s a little more tiring this time around! However, I absolutely love being pregnant, especially as I get to come to work feeling so inspired every day!

As the mastermind behind many of our most innovative products, can you tell us where your inspiration comes from?

I’m a firm believer that the right wardrobe can play a big part in a woman’s smooth journey into motherhood. And what better source of inspiration could I ask for than being on this path myself? I can honestly say I’ve never felt so inspired as I am in my own motherhood journey.

I came up with the idea for our skin to skin tops thanks to my first pregnancy. After welcoming my daughter I started making notes about what I wanted, and by the time my son arrived a year and a half later, the top I’d dreamed up was ready to use.

The same thing happened with my son – as I breastfed him, I was thinking about all the ways I could improve the nursing bras that I had. All those ideas went into making our new Baby Sensory Bra, which features a full-coverage modesty panel with a high-contrast print to keep baby focussed, as well as wide supportive straps to encourage good posture & prevent back ache. I can’t wait to try it out once my new little one arrives!

Being in the motherhood space and listening to other mums around me is also a massive bonus. I absorb everything I can regarding the hurdles we face as mothers and I am always on the lookout for a solution we can offer at Seraphine!

Do you think your own pregnancies & experience of motherhood have affected your approach to design?

Chelsey Oliver and her family

Get the look: High Low Hem Cotton Maternity Shirt & Ripped Boyfriend Maternity Jeans

I’ve been designing maternity clothing since the start of my career, so naturally my approach has evolved. My interest in the fashion industry has always been focused on empowering women to feel confident in their bodies. Part of that drive comes from being curvy myself since my teen years and always feeling frustrated with ill-fitting clothing on the high street.

It’s fair to say that at the start of my career, my focus was on designs that fit the body well and adapt with curves. As the years passed, I became very aware of the environmental impact of short-use clothing – and so it became a focus of mine to ensure all pieces we design provide longevity through adaptability & functionality. Our 3 in 1 babywearing jackets are the perfect example – the work with your bump through pregnancy, adapt for babywearing & can be worn long afterwards too as a regular coat!

Later, my experience of being a busy mum in an age where we put a great deal of pressure on ourselves to be great both at home and at work, has given me the edge for innovation. I take great satisfaction in continually revolutionising the modern maternity wardrobe to be really hardworking.

As an expectant mama yourself, what are your personal must-have pieces – the ones you get the most wear out of?

Chelsey Oliver and her son

There are some pieces that I swear I wear whenever they are clean! My favourites through the work week are the two-piece dresses – most of which will see me well into the spring and for nursing.

Great lingerie is a must, and on the weekends I live in our dungarees. I must admit, I never wore dungarees pre-motherhood, but I find they are the perfect piece for being active with my kids – with or without a bump!

What are your top recommendations for:

Chelsey Oliver, Brand & Creative Director at Seraphine Maternity

1st Trimester

Invest in comfy lingerie – it’s important to have a good selection that you can wear as your body changes – a growing bustline is one of the first areas we see change.

2nd Trimester

I don’t have a specific product here, almost everything we design will give great use from this point onwards! A pair of maternity jeans, a great dress and some leggings are all a must!

3rd Trimester

For comfort I’d go for the maternity dungarees + some great nursing tops to layer under them.

Hospital Bag

For this one, my ideal list would be a bit endless – but don’t forget, everything you buy for the hospital bag will equip you well into your nursing journey! Don’t miss your skin to skin top and a two pack of button-down nighties for the hospital.

4th Trimester

The 3 in 1 babywearing hoodie is a must-have for evening strolls. Also, I’ve had 2 caesareans so the post maternity shaping jeans are a personal favourite of mine – they give me great support once I’ve fully healed, which is great for babywearing!

And finally, as a working mother, do you have any tips for balancing work & family life?

Chelsey Oliver with her children

Don’t be afraid to ask for help! It seems an obvious one, but so many of us take on too much. I’m guilty of assuming that those around me just ‘know’ what I need from them, and so often a little more communication goes a long way!

Similarly with your doctor or midwife, if anything ever just doesn’t feel right, or if you have a gut instinct something is wrong, listen to it and insist on getting the help you need – taking care of yourself is as important as taking care of your family!

Maternity Style with Nathalie Bernadotte of Kensington Mums

Nathalie Bernadotte is a partner and event manager at Kensington Mums – a local London network aiming to provide support and to help mums make connections and forge friendships. Nathalie has a lively 2 year old Leonardo and a brand new baby daughter Sienna – she opens up about maternity style & becoming a mother of two.

1)      First, congratulations on welcoming your beautiful new daughter! How are you finding life as a mum of two?

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Two months in and I still can’t believe I’m a mum of two… the joy is hard to describe!

Its not easy as my son is going through the terrible twos at the moment so many tantrums to handle and In all honesty, I had forgotten how tough it is to wake up several times per night breastfeeding. But again, I can’t and don’t want to complain – it was always my dream to be a mum so becoming a mum of two; what a blessing!!!!

My son adores his little sister and cannot wait for her to be a little older and play. It’s a special bond and I am so happy to have been able to give this to them.

2)   We love your maternity style! Can you sum it up in 3 words?

Thank you! hmmm, shall we call it ‘The Seraphine Style‘? 3 words, that’s tough but I’d probably go with ‘practical‘, ‘comfortable‘ and ‘me‘.

3)   How did you style your bump? Are you more of a fitted kind of girl, or did you like to keep things loose and flowing?

I surprised myself during pregnancy – I normally wear loose & comfy clothes but during pregnancy I enjoyed showing off the bump with more tight & fitted outfits.

On one specific occasion, my 30th birthday, I wore the Seraphine Claret Lace Maternity Cocktail Dress which I LOVE! All my friends were very surprised to see me in such a tight ‘sexy’ dress – I don’t think I would have ever dared without the bump.

But I must add that it also depends on the pregnancy. When I was pregnant with my son, I was due in September and wore loose tops and maternity dresses during the summer as it helped with dealing with the heat. This time round I was due in December and it was really cold so I preferred having tight warm clothes on me.

4)      Do you have a favourite piece from the Seraphine collection?

I’d say most dresses from the Luxe Collection! But the Silk and Lace Maternity Evening Gown I wore at a dinner party back in October has to be ‘the one’. I wore it in black but the Navy & Black combination is just a dream.

And I adore the ‘you + me = us‘ charity top. In fact I am wearing that today…and most days! (scroll down to see the picture!)

5)      How do you feel that being involved with Kensington Mums has helped you through pregnancy and as a mother?

I first joined Kensington Mums in 2013 as an expecting mum. I was the first in my close group of friends here to become pregnant. So meeting other mums-to-be was invaluable. It also helped me mingle with girls who, just like me, don’t have a family support system in London and have to go through pregnancy and motherhood with little support.

Kensington Mums helped me build confidence and make many new friends along the way – many of which I am sure will be good friends for a very long time.

Since becoming a partner in this business, it has been of great help in introducing me to many mummy related brands, companies and other mum-preneurs, which I would have never known about without working at Kensington Mums.

6)      Do you have any beauty or styling tips to share with other expectant mums?

Don’t lose yourself, look after yourself during pregnancy.

I know it can be a very challenging time in our lives and not being in control of our bodies can be extremely frustrating but it’s your body and it’s the same body you will have after giving birth so look after it. Rest when you need, exercise when you can and nurture it everyday.

7)   We are confiscating your makeup bag – you’re allowed to keep three essential cosmetics. What do you choose?

This is a tough one as I’m not big on makeup (mostly because I’m not very good at it) so it would have to be… concealer, mascara and lip balm/gloss (I’m obsessed with lip balms)

8)      If you could have one super power, what would it be & how would you use it?

Before becoming a mum I wouldn’t count this as a super power but now…. it would have to be PATIENCE and I would use it at all times with my little ones.

9)      Who are your heroes? Can you share your top 3 inspirational women?

I’m not sure I have any heroes or can name 3 individual inspirational women. I admire many women.

I have a lot of respect for single mums out there. I think that doing the job I do as mum can be extremely challenging and I am lucky and blessed to have my husband by my side to help me and don’t know what I’d do without him, so to know that there are women out there who do it all alone is just incredible.

I find most of my friends inspirational. They are ordinary people who can at times struggle through everyday challenges, but just get on with it. That to me is inspiring.

Women inspire me.

10)   What was the best piece of advice you received when you were pregnant?

Sleep when your baby sleeps! I completely ignored this advice the first time round and now that I understand it and want to put it into action, it’s impossible because when baby sleeps, 2 year old wants to play.

Leaving Hospital Outfit

Hospital bag checklist - what to pack

Soft, Comfy Maternity Clothes: Your body will take time to settle back to normal, so your maternity leggings, tops and dresses will be your best friends for the first weeks & months with baby. Choose an outfit that’s soft, comfy and easy to wear. But don’t forget, you’ll be taking plenty of pictures of baby’s first few days, so make sure to choose an outfit you’ll be happy to look back on in years to come.
