5 Pregnancy Perks You’ll Miss Once Your Baby is Born

Towards the end of the third trimester, it’s only natural to start to feel a little impatient. You’ve waited almost 9 months to meet your little bundle of joy, yet somehow the last few weeks seem to drag!

But however excited you are, be careful not to wish away this special time. Today we want to remind you of all the really wonderful things about being pregnant that you may not realize you’ll miss.

Here’s a quick run down of our top five pregnancy perks:

1)    Guilt-Free Naps

As you’re likely all too aware, growing a baby takes a lot out of a girl! During pregnancy, catching a few Zs where you can is not just allowed, but practically prescribed! So we suggest that you take advantage of a sneaky guilt-free nap whenever and wherever the mood takes you…. It won’t be long before sleep comes at a premium, so why not treat yourself to a new set  of comfy maternity pyjamas!

2)      Eating for Two

This may well be the only time in your life when your doctor is actively encouraging you to put on weight – so enjoy that extra slice of pie – you deserve it! What to Expect recommend that you ought to be getting an extra 300 calories per day during the first trimester, an extra 350 per day through the second and a completely decadent 500 extra calories per day through your third trimester. So go ahead and indulge those pregnancy cravings – your stretchy maternity jeans can take it!

3)      Stylish Maternity Clothes

No restrictive waistbands or harsh fabrics here! Good quality maternity clothes are specifically designed to be gentle against sensitive skin; so they will be some of the softest, most comfortable clothes you will ever have the pleasure to wear. But that doesn’t mean you’ll be compromising on style – At Seraphine all of our maternity wear is designed with a focus on fashion, so that you can continue to rock your style through every trimester.

4)      Beauty Bonus

All those extra hormones racing around your body may have you in tears for no apparent reason, but they do have their up sides too. Your hair may be thicker and a little more lustrous than usual, or you may notice that your skin begins to glow from within, and you will almost certainly notice a little extra va-va-voom in the bra department! Just a few little beauty perks to expect when you’re expecting.

5)   Taking Part in the Miracle of Life

It may sound cheesy, but it’s a really special thing you’re doing. You are creating a whole new little person and bringing them into the world! This is something that not everybody gets to do in their lives, and it’s an experience to cherish.

The Business of Motherhood: When Cecile met Celia

By fashion stylist, journalist and pregnant mother-of-one, Charlotte Kewley

Celia Muñoz, mother-of-five, founder of La Coqueta and Cecile Reinaud, mother-of-two, founder of Seraphine are two of the most inspirational powerhouses of a working mother one could have the pleasure to have a cup of tea with. I was lucky enough to get that opportunity when they met for the first time at the Seraphine headquarters in London to chat business, life and motherhood …

I arrived with my dictaphone and question list at the ready but it turned out I mostly just let them talk and listened in… here’s how the conversation went.

It was great to chat with Celia Munoz from @lacoquetakids & mum-to-be journalist @charlottekewley this morning!

How did you each get into fashion?

Cecile: I was working in advertising, then I started to notice pregnant women in my office complaining that they didn’t know how to get dressed. I realised that maternity fashion was a niche that was under-serviced. So being 30 and super enthusiastic, I wrote a business plan, started talking about it and off I went! That was 13 years ago.

Celia: That’s incredible. Obviously we’re a much younger business, only three years old. I worked as a head hunter for 8 years, then had my first child, Flavia, aged 30. I always had a love for children’s fashion – it’s part of a Spanish person’s DNA. I used to dress her in beautiful Spanish clothes, people would stop me and ask where they were from. At some point I thought actually there could be a business opportunity here. I did three years of research to build my business plan and find suppliers as I had no retail experience, no production experience…

Cecile: Same as me!

Celia: It took a really long time! But when I had my 5th child I decided that was the time. I really wanted to start my own childrenswear business. So I opened my shop and it all started.

Cecile: So we have quite a similar story… except that you had 5 children!

A photo posted by Celia Munoz (@lacoquetakids) on

Celia, how did you do that with five children? A lot of women struggle with one or two.

Celia: I think the secret is being extremely organised. I’m very routine focused. So we do everything the same every single day, we plan ahead. My husband and I cook for a month and freeze everything. We try to live a life that is fairly spontaneous within a very organised framework and it works. I’m not going to lie, I do have help at home. How do you make it work Cecile?

Cecile: The same I suppose. Being organised, having the right help and I always say there is no such thing as the perfect mum!

Celia: You can never get it right! If you’re at home all the time or not you’re always going to be judged!

Cecile: Yeah and at the end of the day I think I have a better relationship with my kids because I don’t worry about the small things. When I’m with them I’m much more chilled and relaxed.

Cecile, you founded Seraphine before you became pregnant. Once you were pregnant did anything change?

Cecile: It was only just before. A lot of our first pieces I designed for myself, I think that was part of the success of the brand. But then my baby was born, I had a big store with a big investment behind it and no help, no family close by. It was the most challenging time in my life. I nearly collapsed! Literally. It was too much

Celia: I can see how it must have been so hard. The first baby is just the hardest thing ever…

Cecile: So when people ask, I say don’t do it like me! Don’t start a business at the same time as a family. It’s too much stress.

A photo posted by Celia Munoz (@lacoquetakids) on

So what would be your advice to any new mothers or women starting their own business or just going back to work?

Cecile: I think to find yourself a network. Like anything in life, when you share problems you feel normal. When you’re lonely it’s hard!

Cecile, can we just talk about the Kate Middleton effect? How did the royal affiliation happen? It must have been a wow moment when she first stepped out in one of your dresses?

Cecile: I remember when it happened I was in the office, it was 5pm and my PR Assistant said ‘Cecile can you come here? I think she’s wearing our dress!’ I just couldn’t believe it! She chose our Fuchsia Knotted Maternity Dress for Prince George’s first official picture. So for her second pregnancy we offered to do bespoke pieces, it worked, they loved them, bought them and she wore them at official occasions and it’s been a fairy-tale!

And now you’ve launched The Diana Award baby collection?

Cecile: Yes, I was approached by the charity, obviously the idea was to raise money and awareness – we give 12% of sales from our baby wear collection to the charity, which is really satisfying. We also did the collaboration Love T-shirt with Tommy’s charity… it’s fun and for a good cause.

And Celia, you of course recently collaborated with House of Hackney?

Celia: Yes! Just like with Seraphine I love HOH and I could just see it working out. I think it’s nice to surprise your customer and keep coming up with new ideas….

What’s the most important message for your business? Why do your customers come to you?

Cecile: For us it’s simple. To make you feel amazing during your pregnancy and look beautiful! If we tick that box we’re happy.

Celia: For us the customer comes for anything that is handcrafted, all of our smocks are handmade and everything is beautifully finished.

And finally what are your must-buys from your own SS16 collections?

Cecile: The luxe dresses – we have a luxe collection of maternity evening wear – the gowns are amazing.

Celia: Our cotton sets for newborns, they’re very practical staples. And of course a handmade smock dress!

Say NO to Pregnancy Stretch Marks with Mama Mio – COMPETITION

It’s no secret: pregnancy can be tough on your skin. But with a little dedication, and the right tools in your cosmetics arsenal, you can minimise the damage, and in many cases avoid stretch marks altogether. So you can feel just as fabulous out of your maternity dresses as in them!

Read on for your chance to win a fabulous selection of skin firming Mama Mio products…

Why do we get stretch marks?

Stretch marks appear when your skin is put under pressure. During pregnancy you are growing faster than ever before and, just like your maternity dresses, your skin has to stretch to keep up. The problem is, that all of the essential fatty acids you need to sustain your skin’s elasticity are being hot-wired direct to your baby. And of course that’s where they should go, we’re glad to give them – but it means that your skin is going through its toughest ever challenge, while at its weakest point.

Seraphine maternity lingerie

What can we do to avoid them?

This is where Mama Mio comes in… They’ve developed a fantastic range of skin firming & elasticity increasing products designed specifically for mums during pregnancy, breastfeeding & afterwards, when you’re thinking about getting your body back to normal.

Prevention & protection is the name of the game; by applying those essential fatty acids omega 3, 6 and 9 directly to the skin, you can bypass the rest of your system, and feel the benefits exactly where you want them.

Hospital Bag Checklist: What to Pack for Mum & Baby

As your third trimester approaches, it’s time to start thinking about what to pack in your hospital bag.

Space at the hospital is limited, but you definitely don’t want to arrive only to realise that you’ve forgotten something essential.

Zabeena’s Hospital Bag Checklist

We caught up with third-time mama Seraphine model Zabeena, who shared her ultimate hospital bag checklist with us. These are the things she’ll be taking along for baby number three.

Zabeena is packing the Seraphine Tote Bag

Check out our Hospital Bag selection to see our top picks for taking to the hospital.

Hospital Bag Must-Haves For Mum

What to pack in your hospital bag

*Your Birth Plan: You’ll want a printed copy handy to give to your midwife.

*Comfy Maternity Nightwear: A soft button-down nightie is a must – it’s ideal for labour as well as skin to skin and breastfeeding afterwards. A matching dressing gown and supportive sleep bra are also a great idea to pack.

Browse our range of maternity & nursing nightwear online.

*Slippers: Because nobody wants to get cold feet during labour!

*A Camera: Capture those first precious moments.

Packing your hospital bag

* The Wash Bag: Make sure to pack all the regular overnight essentials – Toothbrush & toothpaste, lip balm, hairbrush, ties & clips, flannel, face wash, deodorant, travel size shower gel, shampoo, conditioner & towels, tissues, wet wipes, and maternity pads.

*Some Distractions: Magazines, music, phone, iPad & chargers – don’t get caught out without juice at a crucial moment.

Leaving Hospital Outfit

Hospital bag checklist - what to pack

Soft, Comfy Maternity Clothes: Your body will take time to settle back to normal, so your maternity leggings, tops and dresses will be your best friends for the first weeks & months with baby. Choose an outfit that’s soft, comfy and easy to wear. But don’t forget, you’ll be taking plenty of pictures of baby’s first few days, so make sure to choose an outfit you’ll be happy to look back on in years to come.

Julia Bradbury tackles TV shoots, press, premiers & pregnancy!

TV presenter Julia Bradbury is best known for co-presenting BBC’s Country File with Matt Baker. She lives in West London with her partner Gerard and their 3 year old son Zephyr, and she is expecting twins later this year. She reveals her secret to finding stylish maternity clothes while dealing with a full on schedule!

When you’re pregnant you’re meant to avoid high pressure/stressful situations aren’t you? So finishing up a new television series, doing lots of press interviews and moving house are probably not what the Gyn ordered. To add to the story, I have a 3year old little boy, I’m 44 and pregnant with twins. It’s been a full-on few months and this pregnancy has affected me differently; swollen ankles, fatigue and nausea have all decided to come to the party this time round, after a near dreamy first pregnancy. Perhaps it’s my age, perhaps it’s because this bundle is a twin engine; whatever the reasons, I’ve been taking naps when I can, doing lots of breathing exercises and walking (I can’t bend over so yoga is out). My FitBit wrist band really helps keep track of my steps because I genuinely don’t feel like pushing myself, but it’s good to know I’ve passed the 5,000 (approx. 2.5 miles) step mark without too much trouble, although I’d normally aim for at least 10,000 steps a day.

Julia Bradbury pregnancy style

My new series is called the Wonder of Britain and kicked off on ITV1 at 9pm on Tuesday 6th January 2015. It’s a celebration of the elements that make Britain stand out as an iconic island, from magnificent landscapes to incredible buildings. I explore the country on boats, planes and zip wires digging out all the good stories along the way, travelling from the Isle of Skye in Scotland all the way down to the White Cliffs of Dover. Luckily we’d done all the super-active bits of filming (like abseiling down a 500ft inland cliff at Cheddar Gorge) before I fell pregnant but we did have to scrap a helicopter sequence where I got air-lifted off a rock face right at the end of the series and that was probably for the best!

Julia Bradbury in Seraphine

The last month has involved doing lots of press and photo shoots for the show and all I can say is thank Obi-Wan-Kenobi for Serpahine maternity clothes! It’s not easy styling multiple shoots one after the other when you’re packing a bump of this size! On top of that, I’ve had a lot of formal and black tie events to go to… Seraphine saved the day at the Katie Piper Foundation Fund Raiser in December where I spent the evening with the handsome duo Jake Humphreys and Gethin Jones. It was a great night and thanks to the support and attendance of Simon Cowell with all the X-Factor judges (including beautiful Cheryl and striking Mel B) the event raised nearly £250k to help people live with burns and scars. My Seraphine maternity maxi gown was such a success that I cheated and wore it again to the Royal Albert Hall 2 weeks later for the TV Times Christmas with The Stars night, raising money for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. I introduced a carol with the delightful Deborah Meaden from Dragon’s Den – I did try and crouch down for a photo (she’s 5’1, I’m 5’ 9”) but I just looked a bit hunched!

Julia Bradbury pregnancy in the press

At the opening night of ONCE, Ronan Keating made his West End stage debut and despite appearing to be a little bit nervous he really smashed it. I remember interviewing BoyZone when they first formed, so it was good to see them again and marvel at Shane Lynch’s enormous beard!  The next day I was up to the top of the Leadenhall Building in the City for more photos for a couple of newspapers. The top floor of one of London’s tallest skyscrapers in mid-winter is not somewhere I’d recommend you hang about but the London skyline looked incredible twinkling away that evening. The building is featured in the first episode of the Wonder of Britain so it was the perfect location to wrap things up for Christmas.  Next up, moving house….

The Seraphine Maternity Jacket Loved by the Swedish Princesses

Meet our Cropped Peplum Maternity Jacket; the favourite style of the Swedish Princesses!

Over the weekend, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden rounded up her official visit to Peru and Colombia with a trip to the Colombian Gold Museum in Bogotá, wearing our Cropped Ivory Peplum Maternity Jacket! She paired it with a monochrome maternity dress, a stylish clutch and classic pearl earrings – the perfect look for a day of official royal duties.

And Victoria isn’t the only Princess to fall for this stylish little maternity jacket. Earlier this year her younger sister Princess Madeleine of Sweden wore the Cropped Black Peplum Maternity Jacket for her audience with The Pope in Rome! The smart jacket paired perfectly with her black lace dress and veil, completing the stylishly demure outfit.

The Princess and the Pope

Our smart Peplum Jackets are designed to flatter the figure through every stage of pregnancy. Made with a simple round neckline and sleek hook and eye fastenings, the feminine peplum kicks out from the empire line, defining your new shape.

Princess Victoria has loved wearing her new Seraphine maternity clothes throughout her trip to Peru and Colombia. She looked stunning in a bespoke red maternity dress to meet the Peruvian President, and debuted our Cornflower Blue Silk and Lace Maternity Dress – which will be available for purchase from our LUXE Collection early next year – at a reception with the Mayor of Cartagena in Colombia. She even re-wore the purple bespoke Seraphine outfit that she had worn to her Nephew Prince Nicolas’ Christening, to meet the President of Colombia.

Twins & Celebrity Babies: Double the trouble, triple the fun!

We want to talk about Twins. The arrival of a new baby in the family is always an incredibly special time, so just imagine what it’s like to have two, three or even more at once – we’re thinking double the trouble, triple the fun!

With one in every 65 pregnancies resulting in a multiple birth, twins and triplets are on the rise right now, and the celebs – as always – are on top of the trend! Both Beyoncé & Jay Z and Amal & George Clooney are getting set to welcome twins this year, joining the already glamorous list of celebrity parents with twins including Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts and Angelina Jolie to name but a few…

Twins celebrity babies

And of course a fair few of these stylish celebrity twin mamas have rocked Seraphine maternity clothes! ‘Devious Maids’ star Dania Ramirez chose one of our silk maternity dresses for her baby shower back when she was expecting her non-identical twins John and Gaia.

A post shared by Dania Ramirez (@daniajramirez) on

Stunning Spanish actress Elsa Pataky was a big fan of Seraphine knitwear while she was expecting her fraternal twin boys Tristan and Sacha. We love this picture of her husband, Thor actor Chris Hemsworth playing super heroes with his boys!

Holly Branson, the daughter of entrepreneur extraordinaire Richard Branson, is mama to twins Etta and Artie. She wore plenty of Seraphine maternity clothes throughout her pregnancy, and loved our Faux Leather Panel Maternity Leggings so much that she continued wearing them after the babies were born.

If you are a mama expecting multiples, you may find that your bump begins to show earlier than your friends expecting singletons – sometimes as early as 10 weeks, so finding maternity clothes quickly becomes a priority! Shopping for maternity clothes online is an ideal option if you’re still suffering with first trimester queasiness, and here at Seraphine we offer free returns on all UK orders!

One thing that all mamas of multiples agree on is that though twins mean a double work load, they also mean double the fun. There’s nothing like watching your twins’ bond strengthen as they grow. They’ll learn to play together, enjoying each other’s company, sharing toys, and even working together to get around mummy & daddy!

You also get to be a part of hilarious moments like this!

To all the expectant multiple mums out there, we salute you, and wish you the best of luck for your coming adventures!

Glow Like a Goddess – Radiant Skin, Glossy Hair and a Gleaming Smile

Glow like a goddess through your pregnancy with these simple hints and tips for radiant skin, glossy hair and gleaming white teeth!

We’ve all heard of that radiant glow that appears during the early stages of pregnancy – the one that will have friends and family commenting on how well you look, while you and your partner exchange sneaky glances because you have a secret that nobody else in the world knows!

Well why not give your natural glow a little boost with these simple pregnancy-safe tips:

Radiant Skin

pregnancy glow tips

There are no shock revelations or secret shortcuts here (well maybe just one, but we’ll get to that soon enough)! The main way to ensure radiant skin fit for a goddess, is to lead an equally saintly healthy lifestyle. That means drinking plenty of water and eating good anti-oxidant rich foods like grapefruit, watermelon and broccoli to flush out toxins. Ideally you should also be getting plenty of exercise to boost oxygen flow, and sleeping at least 7 hours a night to banish dark circles around your eyes.

When it comes to your skincare routine, every goddess is different, so all we can really advise here is that you find a regime that works for you and your skin and then stick to it – though of course through the summer it’s always important to protect your skin with a good quality SPF30 sun cream with both UVA and UVB protection. You may find that your skin becomes more sensitive during pregnancy, so it’s a good idea to steer clear of heavy duty products, opting for the gentler ones instead.

Sneaky Fix

And here is that secret shortcut we mentioned earlier: If you’re in need of an instant boost – before posing for the camera at a special event or heading into an important meeting – try sucking on an ice cube! This will chill all of the cells in your cheeks and lips, boosting circulation to your face and providing a plumper, rosier complexion! Works like a charm!

Glossy Hair

For glossy, goddess-worthy locks, there are just a few simple changes you can make to your hair care routine, which will make a world of difference. First of all, it’s no news that heat is damaging to your hair, but you may not know how easy it is to counteract the effects: Finish your shower with a quick cool rinse, then make sure to use the cool shot setting on your hair dryer while blow drying and you’ll be left with smooth and shiny hair! Another easy change to make is to switch your nylon hairbrush for natural bristles – these are gentler and less likely to cause split ends, and they work to distribute the good natural oils through your hair.

Top Tip

Did you know that different hair colours behave differently? Lighter hair is more porous, and will be more prone to build-up, so blondes are at their glossiest when their hair is freshly washed. Whereas those with darker hair are at their best with well-conditioned second-day hair! Learn how your hair behaves and you’ll be able to wash wisely for your next big event.

Gleaming Smile

Aside from the obvious (brush twice a day and don’t forget to floss), the main message when it comes to keeping your teeth pearly white is to eat plenty of crunchy fruit and veg like cucumber, celery, broccoli and carrots – sounds like some crunchy crudités and hummus is in order! In fact some fruits like apples are particularly good tooth whiteners, as they are crunchy and are known to contain malic acid – a chemical actually used in commercial teeth whitening products to dissolve stains!

Natural Whitening

Strawberries are another great source of that miraculous whitening agent malic acid, and can actually be used to make a fantastic organic home whitening treatment!

  • Mash 1 strawberry together with ½ teaspoon of baking soda.
  • Apply the mix to your teeth with a soft toothbrush
  • Leave to work for 5 minutes
  • Brush thoroughly with toothpaste to remove the berry mix
  • Rinse
  • Repeat up to once a week for a permanent pearly gleam

Fashion

Of course once you’ve achieved your goddess-like glow, there’s no better way to show it off than in a striking maternity maxi dress! Then complete the look with jewelled sandals and our Shimmering Platinum Waterfall Maternity Cardigan for a truly iridescent look!
