An Introduction to Pregnancy Yoga with Tara Lee

Tara Lee has been practicing yoga for over 20 years. She is a registered senior teacher with Yoga Alliance UK and is a trained Doula who has taught thousands of pregnant women, guiding them through their pregnancies and births. She is also a mum of 2.

Tara’s pregnancy yoga DVD boxset “Bump, Baby and Beyond” is now available online. Read on for Tara’s introduction to the benefits of pregnancy yoga.

Pregnancy Yoga

pregnancy yoga

Many women instinctively feel more connected to their bodies during pregnancy and more concerned with looking after themselves now that they have a new life growing inside. This makes it the perfect time to practice yoga even if you have never done any before.

Many expectant mums attend yoga classes thinking that they would like to stretch a little bit, or because they have been told it will be good for them and their babies. They soon discover after a few classes that not only have aches and pains disappeared, they also feel more energised and have a stronger connection to their bodies and their babies.

The stretches help to release tightness and tension from the muscles, but the breathing techniques used work on a deeper psychological level to release fears, anxieties and bring a feeling of calmness and clarity to the mind. Insomnia, sciatica, hip pain, rib pain, back ache,  SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction), pelvic girdle pain, headaches, anxieties and general discomfort can be drastically improved or disappear altogether with regular yoga practice.

As the bump starts to grow and the centre of gravity shifts, regular yoga practice can help fine tune the balance both physically and emotionally. The classes also offer tools (such as breathing techniques and positions for birth) to use during the labour that help women feel empowered, in control and able to deal with whatever turn their birthing takes.

Yoga to Aid Labour & Recovery

A regular yoga practice during pregnancy does not provide any guarantee of a ‘perfect’ birth. If anything it helps women realise that there is no such thing as the ‘ideal birth’ but that they can stay calm and open minded and embrace the experience. It helps women to develop the right mindset to cope well when things don’t go according to plan (as so often happens).

Using the movements, breathing and sound techniques learnt during the classes encourages the body to relax and open, supporting the labour, speeding up contractions and assisting and facilitating the whole labour process. Women who have practiced yoga through pregnancy are better able to listen to their bodies, to move instinctively and trust that their bodies know what to do.

Additionally the recovery after the birth will be better for women who are fit and healthy from yoga practice throughout pregnancy. They are less likely to suffer from prolapsed organs, pelvic floor weakness or incontinence and can apply the techniques they have learnt for their labour to cope with those exhausting first months to gain energy and stay calm.

Postnatal yoga

Nursery Decor: Get inspired to create a beautiful room for you & baby!

Ready to talk nursery decor? Along with shopping for maternity clothes, decorating your baby’s nursery can be one of the most fun aspects of being pregnant! It’s a fantastic way for you and your partner to prepare for baby’s arrival, and a fun project to tackle together. You can let your imagination run wild and create a beautiful haven for you and your little one. This room will be your baby’s primary environment (and you and daddy will spend a lot of time here too). So it makes sense to put in a little effort when it comes to nursery decor!

If you’re looking for a little inspiration to help you get started, we are here to help!

Nursery Decor Themes

Your baby’s nursery is the perfect place to let your creative side take over, and it can look really effective to decorate around a theme! The options are endless:  You could create a fairytale palace for your little princess or a jungle adventure for your little monkey. Opt for nauticalaeroplanesouter spacefairies or even your favourite Disney characters! The great part is, that you can do as much or as little as you like: Your nursery decor is totally up to you!

Gender Neutral Nursery Decor

If you’re keeping  the sex of your baby a surprise (or if it’s twins!) it’s easier than you might think to create a gender neutral nursery. Choose a neutral base colour like white or grey and incorporate pops of colour like orange, green and yellow. Or you could choose a nursery decor theme that works for for boys and girls: Try woodland animalsadventures and explorers or alphabet!

A Magical Place for you and Baby

One of the main things to keep in mind with nursery decor, is that this is a place where you will spend a lot of time! When baby arrives, you will be in and out of this room all day long and throughout the night as well. Our top tip is to make sure that you love the nursery furniture you choose – and to pick a comfy arm chair for late night feeds! While you’re at it, why not invest in some comfortable nursing dresses and nursing nightwear or one of our stylish changing bags to make your life a little easier through those first few months.

Magic 105.4’s Jo Parkerson’s Pregnancy Advice & Styling Tips

Jo Parkerson is the Entertainment and Lifestyle Content Director at Bauer Media UK – the parent company of some of the UK’s biggest magazines and radio stations including Absolute Radio, Magic 105.4, Heat, Grazia & Mother & Baby. But you may know her better as the Presenter behind Magic’s Green Room, interviewing some of the world’s biggest stars – scroll down to see what happened when Jo & Bump met Will Smith! Now expecting her second daughter, Jo shares a few of her pregnancy tips and maternity styling tricks.

1)      We love your style! Can you sum it up in 3 words?

Thank you 🙂

High Street lux!

2)      How have you been styling your bump? Are you more of a fitted kind of girl, or do you like to keep things loose and flowing?

A mix of the two depending on how I’m feeling and which trimester I’m in!  First trimester was definitely loose and flowing hiding the bump.  During my 2nd trimester I embarked the bump …once it had popped out and I stopped looking fat!  And now at 32 weeks I’m all about loose and flowing …..shift maternity dresses and tights are my go-to-look.

3)      Do you have a favourite piece from the Seraphine collection?

I love the Woven printed Maternity Dress and the Faux Leather Panel Maternity Leggings. And the Denim Swing Maternity Dress.  Its all lovely!

4)      What is the best part about being pregnant?

Not having to hold my tummy in!  And feeling like you have a little companion everywhere you go – I’m still blown away by the fact I’m growing another human being inside me!

5)      Have you had any weird pregnancy cravings?

Fizzy Water! I can’t get enough of it!

Jo Parkerson's must-have makeup

6)      We are confiscating your makeup bag – you’re allowed to keep three essential cosmetics. What do you choose?

MAC Mineralize Foundation, Benefit Rollerlash Mascara, Benefit Brow Shaping Kit!

7)      Do you have any beauty or styling tips to share with other expectant mums?

Comfort is key…but don’t forget fashion!  Invest in some key pieces that make you feel good.

Don’t try and squeeze into your old clothes as soon as you’ve told everyone your good news, embrace your growing bump & treat yourself to some new maternity clothes!

And the obvious …don’t forget to moisturise your bump every day with a bump cream to prevent or reduce stretch marks

8)      Finding the perfect balance can be a challenge – if you could have one super power, what would it be & how would you use it?

Never ending energy!

9)      Who are your heroes? Can you share your top inspirational women?

Cate Blanchett, Sam Taylor Johnson

10)   What was the best piece of advice you received when you were pregnant?

Try and enjoy it and savour the feeling of your baby growing inside you – as once they’ve popped out you won’t remember those amazing kicking sensations or the changes your body went through.

Seraphine’s Top 5 Spring Makeup Trends for 2016

The start of a new season is the perfect time to shake up your makeup routine with a few fresh new looks – why not get a head start today! Colour is the big story this spring – after season upon season of “no-makeup makeup” it’s seems that we can finally start busting out a bold red lip or electric blue liner again! Read on to discover our picks of the top 5 makeup trends to try this SS16…

Always a failsafe option, the classic red lip united makeup artists across the board this season in a specific shade of candy apple red. Seen all over the runways from Jason Wu to DKNY and Oscar de la Renta; the precision applied bold red lip is the perfect partner for a little black maternity dress, and the ultimate way to bring a little extra oomph to any outfit.

From tiny turquoise touches in the corners at Philip Lim, to iridescent butterfly effects at Diane Von Furstenberg and full on powder blue bandit masks at Chanel; designers & makeup artists couldn’t get enough of bold blue eye shadows and liners. There are no rules here – choose your shade, then go as big & bright or as soft & subtle as you like! This look is perfect for pairing with some of our stylish blue maternity dresses.

There are more ways than one to be pretty in pink this season! Usually reserved for the lips and cheeks, this season saw several makeup artists adding a pop of pink to the eyes. From peachy coral shades at Dior and Erdem to bright candy pink at Giamba, done right this trend can be ultra- soft and feminine – just like our Blush Pleated Maternity Skirt or our Pink Gingham Cotton Maternity Dress.

An unexpected twist on the spring summer catwalks this year was a moody injection of dark, rich lipsticks. We love the berry ombre lip stain at Burberry, the high shine dark gloss at Givenchy, and at Miu Miu we saw a dramatic look with berry liner fading into a dark purple shade. Work the trend with minimal eye makeup for a really striking style.

Designers and makeup artists had some serious fun with sparkles this season, and everybody had their own take on the look. We saw subtle fairy dust shimmers across the lids at Delpozo, major swathes of glitter at Creatures of the Wind, and Kate Spade models sported an understated streak of silver just above the lash line. A touch of sparkle is the perfect way to glam up your outfit for the evening – rock the look with our Premium Stretch Denim Maternity Jumpsuit and a glamorous beaded belt.

Here at Seraphine we’re getting that new year feeling – you know the one. You wake up one morning and realise that you have literally nothing to wear to work. Sounds like it’s time for a work wear wardrobe re-vamp!

When it comes to dressing your bump for the office, the rules are basically the same as they were pre-pregnancy with just a few minor adjustments to flatter your changing figure. Read on for our top tips for professional style in pregnancy…

You Can’t Beat the Classics

A comfy pair of tailored maternity trousers is a must, and you’ll never go wrong with a little black maternity dress. The Seraphine Bump Kit is a great starting point for your professional wardrobe; it offers 4 essential styles to mix, match and accessorise with key pieces from your regular wardrobe!

 Add a Pop of Colour

That being said, don’t be afraid to introduce a touch of colour into the mix! Break up your monochromes with colours and patterns for a more feminine look at the office. Accessorize All Areas

Complete your look & tie your pregnancy work wear ensemble together with the perfect accessories! A well placed belt will work wonders for your figure, breaking up your outfit and defining your empire waist, while a smart It bag will lend your look that perfect professional edge.

And don’t forget the shoes! When you’re expecting at the office, you need shoes that will look the part, and feel comfy and supportive all day long. Seems like a tall order, but ShoeTherapy has got your back! Their fabulous range of stylish ballerina flats and fashion forward loafers are perfect for your 9 to 5; made with ergonomically engineered soles, and designed to take the strain out of walking.

Fashion Blogger & Insta-Star Eimear Varian Barry Talks Pregnancy

Eimear Varian Barry is a super stylish Irish blogger and Instagram queen taking the fashion and lifestyle world by storm. She lives in Surrey with her partner Daniel & their gorgeous two year old Saoirse, and is expecting baby number two in March. We caught up with her to chat about fashion, pregnancy and her biggest inspirations.

1)      We love your style! Can you sum it up in 3 words?

Simple, androgynistic, structural.

A photo posted by E V B (@eimearvarianbarry) on

2)      How have you been styling your bump? Are you more of a fitted kind of girl, or do you like to keep things loose and flowing?

Definitely a mix of both! I don’t know what I did without my black maternity skinny jeans during my first pregnancy! I love pairing them with an oversized maternity sweater at this time of year. I have a few knitted dresses which I love to just throw on. I hate anything that restricts the bump or is in any way tight on it.

A photo posted by E V B (@eimearvarianbarry) on

3)      Do you have a favourite piece from the Seraphine collection?

Yes! The Wool and Cashmere Maternity Coats! I am obsessed with cashmere and love the structural style of these coats. I am wearing a lot of black at the moment, so all three shades go with everything!

Maternity coats

4)      What is the best part about being pregnant?

I think the fact that it actually slows you down. At the beginning, I was frustrated by it, but now I can see how much good it is doing for me physically and mentally.

5)      Have you had any weird pregnancy cravings?

Not weird, but I am eating a copious amount of apples at the moment!

apples

6)      We are confiscating your makeup bag – you’re allowed to keep three essential cosmetics. What do you choose?

  • Primer- I use the Smashbox primer. It is like silk on your skin and keeps my foundation on for hours.
  • My Lip liner. It does wonders for the shape of my lips!
  • Eyebrow Kit. I use the Benefit eyebrow shaper.

7)      Do you have any beauty or styling tips to share with other expectant mums?

I put oil on my bump as much as I can. In saying that, I use oil all over, to prevent stretch marks. On my boobs, bum and thighs too! I use Eve Lom cleanser which I cannot rave more about. My skin has been breaking out lately and their cleanser reduces the redness and is the best product I have ever used for taking off make up.

Eve Lom

8)      Finding the perfect balance can be a challenge – if you could have one super power, what would it be & how would you use it?

Well it’s like every working woman isn’t it? I would love to be able to commit to what I do full time, while also living like the devoted mother in Little House On The Prairie, while also being a more present friend to those who are dear to me. Oh and be able to have the apartment perfect 24/7 and perhaps be able to read a book now and again? And get to shave my legs in between all of that!

9)      Who inspires you?

I bought Lynsey Addario’s book this week. She is a photojournalist I have been following for a while and who I admire hugely. Hopefully I will get around to reading some of it soon!

Lynsey Addario

10)   What was the best piece of advice you received when you were pregnant?

It was from my mum and it was just to do my own thing. Not be scared, not do what the book says but what feels right for you. It worked well for having Saoirse, so i think i’ll do the same this time!

Rose Quartz & Serenity | Meet the Pantone Colours of the Year 2016

The fashion powers that be have spoken: The Pantone colour of the year 2016 has been announced and for the first time ever there’s two of them! This year Rose Quartz and Serenity are set to team up and take centre stage.

Used as stunning standalone shades or combined as a killer pastel pairing, these colours are designed to promote “mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses.”

Set to define design trends for the year to come, from stylish scatter cushions to lipsticks, winter coats and adorable baby clothes; here are a few of our favourite ways to work the shades of the year…

Rose Quartz & Serenity for Mummy

When it comes to styling the Pantone colours of the year for pregnancy, we have plenty of fashionable options to choose from. Dressing for this trend is all about layering up separate pieces in block colours of each shade. Try pairing our Blush Lace Maternity Cocktail Dress with our Powder Blue Natasha Cashmere Blend Coat. Or why not style our Chevron Print Maternity Dress with pink shoes, accessories and lipstick for a fresh spring look. You could even work the trend at bedtime by slipping on our Blue Polka Dot Nursing Nightie with your favourite fluffy pink slippers and dressing gown!

Rose Quartz & Serenity for Baby

Of course it’s not just you who’d look gorgeous in these pretty pastel shades…. Check out the Diana Award Collection – a beautiful new range of designer baby clothes available exclusively at Seraphine, in glorious pinks and blues and featuring the stunning Diana Pastel Tartan. Fall in love with pretty tartan baby dresses, soft cashmere cardigans and smart coats. And melt over adorable fleece-lined baby booties and charming tartan bonnets.

Rose Quartz & Serenity at Home

When combined in just the right way, Rose Quartz and Serenity harmonise in a room to create a space that’s calming and nostalgic with a surprisingly sleek and modern finish. They make a stunning choice for the nursery, and work wonderfully together in kitchens and bathrooms. When incorporating these shades into your home, Interior Designer Jared Sherman Epps suggests: Let one colour take the lead and allow the other to act as an accent to create a serene but striking balance.”

Rose Quartz & Serenity in Beauty

This daring colour duo is sure to be a big hit in the beauty world. Sephora have already released their Pantone Universe inspired range complete with lipsticks in both creamy rose quartz and unexpected serenity. Both shades make for beautiful nail polishes, rose quartz is the perfect blush for a fair complexion, and we predict that this trend could even herald the return of retro blue eyeshadow.
