Look Mag Assistant Editor Claire Sanderson talks Maternity Style

Glamorous mama Claire Sanderson is the assistant editor at Look magazine, who describes herself as a Valley girl done good! Mum to 2 year old cutie Zak with another one on the way, we caught up with Claire to find out how she’s been styling her bump for the office.

1)      Describe your day to day style

I’m all about simple yet knockout dresses and love a printed, vintage find. Pre pregnancy I’m a curvy size 12 with a narrow waist and wide hips so I’m a big fan of nipped in waistlines – the classic tea dress is my ultimate cut. I also prefer a midi length to balance out my hips. I rarely, in fact never, wear jeans or trousers. Even on the weekend you’ll find me in a dress with nice flats and a cross the body bag.

2)      Did you stay true to your style during pregnancy?

Yes, definitely. I’ve worn more plain dresses as opposed to lots of prints, but my waist, although higher, has remained comparatively small to my ever growing hips and bottom so the fit and flare style still suits me best.

3)      How did being pregnant affect your work wardrobe?

To be honest, it didn’t. I’ve just worn different dresses, but with flats rather than amazing heels. One of my colleagues paid me a lovely compliment recently saying I’d worn my pregnancy well and always dressed appropriately for the office.  I’ve tried to keep my wardrobe elegant, even when it’s the last thing I actually feel.

4)      What was your favourite Seraphine piece?

I love the navy pleated dress. It’s so comfortable, a must for expectant mums. The three quarter length sleeves are very flattering and the midi length is perfect to accommodate a growing bump without the hem riding up and becoming too short. The belt detail below the bust line exentuates what is still my slimmest area leaving me feeling confident and ready to take on the work day.

5)      Any top tips to share with pregnant mums?

Pregnancy shouldn’t change who you are or your style, but obviously adjustments have to be made. When it became apparent that I was a liability in heels – my balance and spatial awareness seem to have all but disappeared – I bought a couple of pairs of great flats. I’d also advise investing in key maternity pieces that you can rotate and accessorise differently. Finally, don’t be too hard on yourself. No one is expecting you to look amazing every day.

This week on the blog, we’re handing you over to the experts at The Baby Cot Shop to help you select the perfect cot for your little angel.

Choosing a Luxury Cot for your Newborn

One of the most exciting projects you will undertake during pregnancy is creating your baby’s nursery. A quick look online will reveal the huge range of beautiful nursery furniture designs that are available. There are plenty of options out there, but your home décor and personal style will give you an indication of your preferred taste.

If you’re a fan of period décor you’d love The Marseille Cot. Choose baby bedding that is simple, yet rich in quality to match. Metallic wall paper would complement this cot perfectly, and you could even add a feature wall with a mural of baby’s name or an inspirational quote. We love these fairy tale stickers from Bambizi.

Seraphine recommends: The Woven Printed Maternity Dress

For a feminine look, opt for the Chelsea Luxury Cot. Choose soft furnishings in heavy silk and a neutral colour palette. The Layla Cot bedding features layers of soft fabric and will be a perfect choice for this cot. A lambskin rug will add a soft and delicate ambience to the room, and you can add a touch more glitz and glam with a generous lace canopy.

Seraphine recommends: The Cerise Dot Maternity Dress

The Belgravia Upholstered Cot is an ultra-functional option that’s perfect for small spaces. It’s compact and includes an integrated drawer for storing essentials – it even converts into a sofa when baby has grown out of it. Choose a space saving nursing chair to match like the Elias Nursery Glider Chair, which is compact, comfortable and luxurious.

Seraphine Recommends: The Striped Nursing Shift Dress

Clean and sturdy with an air of sophistication, the Eaton Cot is perfect for the contemporary nursery. Choose on trend baby bedding to go with this cot – our Chevron Retro Baby Bedding would be perfect. And if you are sticking with the geometric theme, you could finish off your nursery with one of our new geometric style rugs.

Seraphine recommends: Knitted Zig Zag Maternity Dress

My Baba founder, Leonora Bamford on life, style and pregnancy

The gorgeous Leonora Bamford is the inspirational mum behind successful parenting site My Baba – a treasure trove of tips, tricks, advice and general life hacks for pregnancy and parenting. Leonora lives in London with her husband and two little ones, and took the time to chat to us about life, style and her experiences of pregnancy.

1) Can you describe your style in 3 words?

Easy, relaxed and wearable.

2) How did you adapt it when you were pregnant?

I wore pretty much the same styles as before, just bigger.  The one thing I invested in early on were pairs of pregnancy jeans with the nifty elasticated waistband.  I couldn’t have lived without them.

3) We love MYBABA – What inspired you to set up a parenting website?

My husband.  It was more of a blog in the beginning with little tips, but literally overnight it turned into something much more, with fun interviews and so many brilliant experts and bloggers coming on board.  I think I’ve been really lucky!

4) Finding the perfect work life balance can be tough – if you could have one super power what would it be & how would you use it?

Would it be boring to say, cloning?  I would love to split myself in two.  I’m totally neurotic and I never think anyone can do things as well as I can.  I know it’s not true but I feel calmer when I’m in control.  It drives everyone around me mad!

5) Life with two little ones must be a lot of fun – did they get up to any mischief this summer?

Too much to mention.  They’re very close in age and they’ve become best friends this summer.  Lots of whispering at night, making ‘secret agent’ plans, ones that don’t involve adults!

My Baba

6) We can’t get enough of the recipes section of MYBABA – what’s your favourite thing to cook with your kids?

I love cooking with the children and our most favourite family recipe has to be pancakes on the weekend.  Not crepe style, but big, soft, fluffy American style pancakes with lashings of maple syrup and homemade chocolate spread.  We love making Natasha Corrett’s Nutella – we keep jars of it in the fridge. I’ve just started a YouTube channel with lots of great child and family recipes and there will be a few pancake recipes cropping up.

7) We are confiscating your makeup bag – you’re allowed to keep three essential cosmetics. What do you choose?

Laura Mercier concealer, Tom Ford bronzer and Bamford lip balm.

8) Who are your heroes? Can you share your top 3 inspirational women?

This one often changes but for today, Arianna Huffington for making me realise that you can have a business and be a good mother, Coco Chanel for being the chicest woman on earth and my mother for writing her first book aged 62.

9) What was your favourite pregnancy outfit when you were expecting?

Bruce Oldfield made me the most beautiful black chiffon swing dress when I was about to pop.  Nothing fit and I had to go to a really smart party.  I remember I had my make up done for a treat and slipped into this gorgeous dress that made me feel beautiful. For everyday though, I had some great maternity clothes from Seraphine that i just lived in.

10) Do you have any advice for expectant mamas? What do you wish you’d known sooner?

Take help when it’s offered.  You don’t have to do everything and sleep is important.  If a friend comes over and offers to look after the baby, don’t feel you have to stay chatting. Go and have a bath and wash your hair, get into a clean nightie and catch a wink or two.  Look after yourself.  A happy mama leads to a happy home.

Seraphine Takes Asia: Live TV, Mandopop & Maternity Dresses

Here at Seraphine we pride ourselves on making maternity clothes that are loved by some of the most glamorous mamas on the planet. From Hollywood A-listers to British royalty, we’ve dressed women from all over the world, and this week we were thrilled to see two stylish Asian celebrities working it in Seraphine!

Chinese Mandopop singer He Jie posted these gorgeous pictures to her Chinese Twitter account, looking super cute in our Geo Print Maternity Wrap Dress. She balanced the chic monochrome style with a pop of colour, pairing it with a statement red hand bag and posing in front of a colourful vertical garden.

Meanwhile over in Japan, national news reader Takako Zenba has been styling it out in Seraphine maternity dresses live on TV. Like He Jie, Takako is a fan of the Geo Print Dress, and also looked super stylish in the Bubble Print Maternity Dress. She opted for a more classic look, styling the dresses with simple maternity camisoles and delicate silver jewellery.

Wherever in the world you are, we hope you’re enjoying styling your Seraphine!

Sophie Ellis-Bextor & Karolina Kurkova are Stunning in Seraphine

Here at Seraphine, we are known for dressing some of the most glamorous women in the public eye through their pregnancies. And last week we were delighted to see not one but two stylish celebrity mamas-to-be rocking Seraphine maternity clothes… Singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor and super model Karolina Kurkova!

Sophie Ellis-Bextor

Last Monday, Murder on the Dance Floor singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor attended the star-studded UKTV live launch at the Phillips Gallery looking stunning in one of our little black maternity dresses. She styled our Zip Detail Maternity Dress with glamorous red nails and a statement silver watch, finishing the look with a pair of classic black flats. The stylish mother of three, married to The Feeling bassist Richard Jones, is expecting her newest arrival latest this year; with immaculate makeup and a feminine half-up, half-down hairstyle, she ruled the red carpet!

Sophie is a fan of Seraphine maternity dresses… Last month, she attended a high profile London theatre premier in our Black & White Polka Dot Maternity Dress, and before that she made a glamorous appearance at the launch party of our brand new Kensington High Street maternity store wearing one of our LUXE maternity dresses. And just this week she was spotted looking uber-glamorous in Nice wearing our Woven Printed Maternity Dress with a pair of retro cat eye shades.

Karolina Kurkova

Then on Friday one of the hottest women on the planet, super model Karolina Kurkova was spotted out and about in New York sporting a casual chic ensemble including a pair of Seraphine cropped maternity leggings! The fashionable mum of one is expecting her second baby in the New Year, and rocked our leggings while enjoying a bit of down time between shows at New York Fashion Week. The stunning Czech model styled her maternity leggings with a long white tee, clean white sneakers and a stylish leather jacket, and accessorised with a chic white hat and shoulder bag.

Karolina created the perfect casual city chic style, and she isn’t the first super model to fall for our ultra-comfy maternity leggings… Doutzen Kroes rocked our Grey Bamboo Active Maternity Leggings for pre-natal ballet lessons while expecting her daughter Myllena Mae, and before that Claudia Schiffer loved our Black Seamless Maternity Leggings for everyday style during her third pregnancy.

Baby is coming: Be ready with nursing clothes & a beautiful nursery

With a baby on the way, now is the time to plan ahead and prepare. Life with your little one will bring plenty of surprises along the way, so it’s smart to be as prepared as possible before the birth. This week on the blog, we’ve got you covered when it comes to nursing clothes, and our friends at Izziwotnot are here to help you create a beautiful nursery for you and baby.

Read on for your exclusive Izziwotnot discount code!

Nursing Clothes

If you plan to breastfeed, it’s a great idea to put together the beginnings of your nursing wardrobe through your third trimester. Nobody wants a situation where daddy gets sent on an emergency shopping mission for nursing bras two days after the birth – least of all him! And the great thing about being prepared is that most good nursing clothes can be worn through pregnancy too, so the earlier you invest, the more wear you’ll get out of your clothes.

To start you off, we suggest investing in at least 3 nursing bras – one to wear, one in the wash & one ready to go. For taking it easy after the birth, a good collection of basic nursing tees, tanks and vests will be perfect for pairing with leggings or your maternity jeans. And for getting out and about with baby, a few chic nursing dresses and jumpers offer comfort and style, while an ultra-soft nursing shawl for discreet feeding on-the-go completes the collection.

Nursery Décor

Izziwotnot

Izziwotnot is a Manchester-based nursery interiors brand, offering a beautiful selection of furniture and accessories designed to help you create rooms that truly inspire, comfort and delight your little ones. From beautiful nursery sets and Moses Baskets, right through to bedding collections and keepsakes, all items are carefully designed with an eye for quality, and made using only the best materials and conforming to the highest British standards. Put simply, Izziwotnot want to help you create a room for your little one that is a safe, cosy and inspiring place to be.

When it comes to planning your nursery, a beautiful cot is a great place to start! The Bailey Cot (pictured above) is a stunning sleigh cot bed, designed to bring a subtle sophistication and an air of English grandeur to your baby’s bedroom. You can buy it separately or as part of a set with a wardrobe or chest of drawers, which are full size and designed to grow with your child. While the cot itself is the perfect investment piece, converting effortlessly into a toddler bed when the time is right.

Fashion Mamas Love the Denim Swing Maternity Dress

Transitioning between late summer and early autumn can be a tricky business, but these stylish fashion mamas have found the answer… it’s the Denim Maternity Swing Dress!

 Kat Buccio denim maternity dress

Fabulous Miami-based fashion blogger Kat Buccio featured the dress on her style blog Freshly Squeezed Fashionista, styling the look with a pair of comfy leopard sneakers, a panama hat and an adorable dinosaur necklace. She couldn’t get enough of the comfy fit, raving:

“Seraphine Maternity makes the most picture-perfect denim dress that I will definitely keep using after I give birth. I love the flowy skirt and the empire cut. It’s comfortable and easy to wear, especially when you’re nine months pregnant!”

Sarah Sweeney Denim Maternity Dress

And she’s not the only one to fall for the transitional charms of this denim dress – Kansas City-based photographer and real fashion mama Sarah Sweeney rocked a retro 70’s inspired look on her blog Becoming Motherful, styling the dress with a cute tassel shoulder bag, shades and a pair of statement fringed heels. We are in love with this look and she is in love with the dress.

Chloe Delevingne

And it’s not just the fashion bloggers who are getting in on the denim action. High society beauty Chloe, the eldest of the fashionable Delevingne sisters, is expecting her second baby later this year. She rocked the Denim Swing Maternity Dress when she attended the launch party of our Kensington maternity store’s brand new location on Kensington High Street, keeping the look simple with long flowing hair, a simple necklace and shades.

A great denim maternity dress is a transitional must-have – it’s perfect right now while the sun is still out, and can be dressed up with tights, boots, hats and this season’s must-have sleeveless blazers once the weather turns colder! If you love the denim swing dress, try our Denim Polka Dot Maternity Dress or our Denim Dungaree Maternity Dress for a different take on the trend.

HELLO! Editor Rosie Nixon: Pregnancy, Celebrity Gossip & Beauty Tips

Rosie Nixon is the editor of Hello! Magazine, and one of the most glamorous women in the media today. With previous credits at Grazia, Glamour and Red Magazine to her name, it’s safe to say that she knows her stuff when it comes to fashion and lifestyle! Rosie lives in London with her husband and 18 month old son Heath, and is expecting her second baby (a little brother!) later this year.

1)     We love your style! Can you sum up your look in 3 words?

Classic with an edge (4 words, sorry)

A photo posted by Rosie Nixon (@rosiejnixon) on

2)     As editor of Hello! You have a stylish image to maintain. How do you manage dressing your bump for work?

Seraphine has been my pregnancy style saviour for the second time, I honestly think you have all 3 trimesters covered better than any other maternity brand. During the early months I find more loose-fitting styles work better but once the bump ‘pops out’, figure-hugging dresses and tops are more flattering. I tend to wear mostly dresses at work as they look smarter, but at weekends I live in leggings with smock tops, vests and cozy sweaters or wraps.

3)     We’ve loved seeing you in Seraphine through both of your pregnancies. Do you have a favourite piece from our collection?

The Bump Kit London has been my wardrobe saviour throughout pregnancy. And I’ve totally fallen in love with the Graphic Floral Maternity and Nursing Dress – I love the slightly edgy print, clingy flattering style, and the fact I can wear it when I’m nursing too. I’m pretty sure I’ll wear it for as long as possible.

4)     There must be plenty of glamorous events to attend as part of your job – what’s the most exciting event you have coming up & what are you planning to wear?

I’ll be attending the GQ Awards soon and the following night am hosting a HELLO! table at the British Olympic Ball. I’ll be wearing Seraphine on both occasions – the claret lace dress for GQ and black lace detail wrap maternity gown for the ball.

5)  You’ve interviewed a lot of famous people with Hello! what’s been the most exciting interview or celebrity home you’ve visited?

I’ve just returned from interviewing Jackie Collins in L.A. – she was fabulous personified and I can’t wait to invite you inside her Beverly Hills home in an upcoming issue. Other memorable interviewees include Robbie Williams on the eve of his wedding, and Sharon Osbourne is always a scream.

6)     We’ve heard a rumour you’ve written a book…

Yes, I’m very excited that my first novel, The Stylist, is going to be published by Harlequin (HarperCollins) in late January 2016. It’s a feast of red carpet fashion, celebrity meltdowns and features a big, exotic showbiz wedding. I REALLY hope you’ll enjoy reading it!

7)     With so much going on, finding the perfect work life balance must be tough – if you could have one super power what would it be & how would you use it?

To click my heels, Dorothy-style, and magic myself around town – especially at the end of the day when I can’t get home quick enough to put my little boy to bed.

8)     What’s your favourite restaurant for a romantic dinner, and which is your favourite for brunch with the girls?

I’m loving the new Soho House on Dean Street in London for mocktails, and I’m a fan of The Breakfast Club for their extensive brunch menu. I like to keep it local for romantic dinners and it’s always a treat to visit Trinity in Clapham, the food is exceptional.

9)     We are confiscating your makeup bag – you’re allowed to keep three essential cosmetics. What do you choose?

L’Occitane, Precious BB Cream SPF30 – it keeps skin moisturized, protected and is a fast, effective way to cover blemishes; Mac cream blusher and Bourgeois Ultra Curl Mascara. And I’ll beg you for my Maybelline Superstay 24 Hour Wear Lipstick!

10)  We can’t get over your gorgeous shiny hair – what’s your secret?

Pregnancy. It is a miracle worker for hair.

The September Issue: The AW15 Trend Report

September is here mamas! As we wave a bittersweet goodbye to summer, we are looking ahead and finding plenty of reasons to get excited about autumn. We can’t wait to start kicking up leaves in our trusty Chelsea boots, indulging in decadent evenings-in with cosy jumpers, hot chocolate and scented candles, and of course trying out the latest new season trends!

Good news all – the 70’s obsession is set to continue well into the new season! This versatile trend offers something for everyone with colourful retro prints, iconic wrap dresses and soft bohemian silhouettes bringing out different fashion moods from this seriously stylish decade. We love Burberry Prorsum’s bohemian luxe prints and statement fringed ponchos, while Bottega Veneta displayed some gorgeous retro colour blocked pieces.

Work the trend with our stylish retro print maternity dresses.

It wouldn’t be autumn/winter without a healthy dose of monochrome – and this season is no exception. From stunning op art checks and stripes at Valentino to swirling psychedelic creations in black and white at Emilio Pucci, black & white is well and truly back for the new season.

Master monochromes with our Circle Print Maternity Dress or our Geo Print Maternity Wrap Dress.

We love autumn’s sophisticated new take on neon. The trick is to introduce just a hint of neon to energize an otherwise neutral outfit. J.Crew used neon yellow accent pieces to dress up cream and camel shades, while Kenzo added zingy neon highlights to jazz up their all black outerwear.

Our Neon Trim Snood Nursing Jumper is the perfect piece to work the trend; finely knit in soft grey with just a hint of zingy neon yellow trim.

Your nautical pieces are set to take on a whole new persona this season. Team striped dresses with tights and boots and top off with a leather jacket, or dress up your Breton tops with slim fitting tailored separates a la Filippa K.

Sail away with an autumn nautical look – work the trend in our Striped Side Popper Nursing Top or the Striped Maternity & Nursing Dress.

From glamorous green lurex at Christopher Kane to Sequins at Nina Ricci and a gold statement dress at Michael Kors, this is the season to sparkle! Shine through the party season and dress up your daywear with decadent sparkles – now is the time to unleash your inner bling monster!

Add a subtle shimmer to your day wear with our Sparkle Tweed Maternity Jacket, or our Long Line Glitter Nursing Top, and glam up your evening repertoire with a statement sequin cocktail dress.

September Style Prep: Top 5 Transitional Must Haves

With September fast approaching, we’ve recently found ourselves eyeing up our tights and Chelsea boots, and wondering… “is today the day?” Our thoughts are turning to those first glorious weeks of autumn – the bright sunny days with just a hint of chill in the breeze.

These in-between days are notoriously tricky to dress for, so check out our top 5 transitional must haves, & prep your September style!

1) Denim Dress

A soft chambray denim maternity dress is the ideal style to transition the seasons. It tends to have a little more weight to it than a regular summer dress and looks just as stylish with sandals as it does with tights & boots!

2) Breton Top

Breton Nursing Top

Nothing navigates between the seasons quite like a classic Breton maternity top. Anything goes when it comes to this season-less style staple; pair it with denim shorts and flip flops, then transition the look for autumn with your favourite maternity jeans and a stylish wrap scarf.

3) Cover Up

Cover Ups

Don’t give up your stylish summer dresses just yet! Transition them for the new season with a luxury cosy cover up. Our Cotton & Cashmere Maternity Cardigans in cream or soft grey are your perfect autumn allies.

4) Ripped Jeans

 Maternity Jeans

A true fashion all-star; a great pair of ripped maternity jeans offers year round style. Turn them up at the ankle & pair with a cute maternity tee when the sun shines, then add a cosy jumper and ankle boots when the weather starts to turn.

5) Nursing Shawl

Nursing Shawls

It’s too warm for a coat, but not quite warm enough to go without altogether… so what’s a girl to do? This is the season for a stylish fashion nursing shawl. Drape it over any outfit to add a high fashion edge and to keep out the chill – discreet cover for breastfeeding is a bonus!
