But once you feel ready, a little gentle exercise is a fantastic way to tone up, boost your mood and even bond with baby!

So slip into your post pregnancy leggings or Seraphine Active Kit & try these fun postnatal exercises at home with baby!

P.S. If you’re still expecting, scroll to the bottom to find a fabulous 25 minute pregnancy yoga video to follow at home…

Exercise with baby

This is just about the sweetest way we can think of to start toning your tum!

Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and feet placed firmly on the floor in a position ready to do sit ups. Sit baby half way up the slope of your thighs, holding him in place around his middle. Then simply do a set of regular sit ups, kissing baby at the top of each one! Aim for 3 sets of 12.

Front stroller squats

Who needs weights when you have a little bundle of joy to lift!

Strap baby into his front carrier, stand with your feet just over a shoulder width apart and complete a set of regular squats. Bend your knees to lower your body into an imaginary chair, keeping your weight over your heels. Aim for 3 sets of 12.

Buggy Lunges

Tone up and make baby laugh!

Put baby in the buggy facing you, then complete a set of regular lunges, stopping at the bottom to pull a funny face and make baby laugh, before slowly returning to your neutral position. This is great for toning your legs and baby will love this fun new game!

Exercise with baby

Teach baby his ABCs and tighten up your abs while you’re at it!

Lying flat on your back with baby next to you, place your arms at your sides and extend your legs straight up toward the ceiling, feet together.
Recite the alphabet slowly to baby, drawing each letter in the air with your toes. Keep the moves slow and controlled, and be sure to keep your belly button pulled in toward the floor. Aim to make it through the entire alphabet.

Exercise with baby

Lie baby down on your mat and position your hands either side of her for a set of regular press ups. This is perfect for toning up your arms, and baby will find it completely hilarious. If those delighted giggles don’t motivate you to finish the set, we don’t know what will!

Keeping Fit Through Pregnancy

If you still have a while to wait before you meet your little bundle of joy, why not try some gentle pregnancy yoga! Yoga is a fantastic way to stay active through your nine months – It’s perfect for relieving tension both physically and mentally, and can even help you to prepare for labour and speed up your recovery time. With regular practice, you’ll feel energised and more connected to both your body and your baby.

Natalie Pinkham’s Pregnancy Style Secret… Seraphine Maternity Clothes!

Gorgeous Sky Sports presenter Natalie Pinkham became a stunning second time mama last week, welcoming a beautiful baby girl named Willow Mirela – a little sister for 17 month old son Wilf.

Natalie has been a fan of Seraphine maternity clothes throughout both of her pregnancies, and this month, she looked stunning in one of our luxe maternity evening gowns to attend a glamorous charity gala. The event, held at London’s infamous Abbey Road studio and boasting a VIP guest list including Princess Eugenie, Mike Tindall and brother and sister Sam and Holly Branson, raised over £600,000 for Hope and Homes – a charity dedicated to ending the institutionalisation of children around the world.

Natalie Pinkham with Princess Eugenie

The gala was held just weeks before her due date, and Nathalie simply glowed in our Black Lace Detail Wrap Maternity Gown.

Last year we caught up with Natalie just after she welcomed her son Wilf, and she let us in on her top tips for styling a bump…

1) Describe your style in 3 words

A bit tomboy.

2) Was it easy to adapt your style for pregnancy?

Not always, but having Seraphine maternity clothes in my wardrobe certainly helped!

3) How did you manage styling your bump on live TV?

I felt proud to be pregnant, so quite enjoyed having a bump on telly! One of my favourite TV outfits was the Seraphine Striped Maternity Tunic – it was so comfy & looked great on screen.

4) What’s the best bit of pregnancy advice your received and who was it from?

My mum – the journey is an incredible one, enjoy every minute – even the tough bits, because you will never be pregnant for the first time again!

5) We are confiscating your makeup bag – you’re allowed to keep three essential cosmetics. What do you choose?

Don’t do it! Please?! Ok… I choose bronzer, mascara and gloss. Done. Happy.

6) What’s your favourite Seraphine piece & why?

I love so many pieces from Seraphine, but probably my most useful was the black maternity swimming costume that i took away on holiday.

Wilf ❤️   A photo posted by Natalie Pinkham (@natalie_pinkham) on

7) Any tips to share with breastfeeding mums?

Try and keep your baby on your boob until it is completely empty, as the best milk is at the back – the hind milk… It’s full of nutrients, antibodies and all round goodness. : ) Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t breast feed. It’s luck of the draw and doesn’t make you less of a mum, or in any way a failure if you can’t do it.

8) Tell us your idea of happiness?

My idea of happiness has been redefined since becoming a mum. He is the centre of my world; I feel very lucky to have him – so every minute with Wilf is pure happiness!

Pregnancy Yoga Poses with Tara Lee | The Ultimate Stress Buster

Tara Lee has been practicing yoga for over 20 years and has been teaching for 12. She began teaching pregnancy yoga while pregnant with her first child 10 years ago and has developed her own dynamic fluid style. Now a mum of 2, she is also a trained Doula and Shiatsu practitioner, and has taught thousands of pregnant women including celebrities such as Cat Deeley and Rosamund Pike, guiding them through their pregnancies and births.

Shop Pregnancy yoga gear and maternity sportswear at Seraphine.

The exercises below are taken from her new DVD ‘Pregnancy Yoga with Tara Lee’.

1) Child’s Pose

Relieves tension in the neck and lower back, and helps to ease anxiety.

Pregnancy yoga child's pose

This classic pose is a masterful one to use during pregnancy. It eases the pressure of the baby on your pelvis and back, stretches the muscles along your spine and releases tension in the neck and shoulders – thereby helping to relieve tension headaches. As one of the few forward bends that feels comfortable and safe in pregnancy, it can be modified to suit most women. The intention here is to feel the broadening through the hips and lower back, gently stretching out and bringing relief to the muscles in your back.

From all fours with your knees as wide as you need to accommodate your baby, take the hips back to your heels and either reach the arms forward or make a pillow with the hands to rest the forehead on. Notice how this makes your back and hips feel. Notice the calming and soothing effect that being in this position has on your mind. Keep allowing the body to surrender towards the earth. Rest here for a few minutes, breathing deeply and slowly and imagine your body softening into the floor, releasing any tension.

You can come into child’s pose any time you are feeling stressed, anxious or if you have a tension headache. Use this position during labour if it feels comfortable when you need to rest. It will also be helpful for allowing your baby space to move into a good position.

2) Legs up the Wall

Relieves heavy legs and swollen ankles, and helps with insomnia or stress.
*Only do this exercise if you are under 28 weeks pregnant and still comfortable lying on your back*

Pregnancy yoga

Sit to the side of the wall (use a cushion or bolster under your hips if it’s easier) and swing your legs carefully up the wall while lying on your back. Stay for a few minutes or for as long as feels comfortable. To lower back down, hug the knees towards you (wide enough to make space for your baby) and slowly roll over to your side. Stay here for 5-10 breaths and then come up from your side.

If you get pins and needles in your feet, come out of the pose and rest to one side for a while before coming back up. If you feel nauseous, also come out of the pose.

3) Downward Dog Alternative

Relieves back ache and stretches the hamstrings.

Pregnancy Yoga Downward Dog

Towards the end of your pregnancy when Downward Dog feels too much, using the wall can be an excellent alternative. This pose is also great preparation for labour. It’s a great pose for if you’ve been sitting at a desk for too long and want to have a feeling of taking the weight of your baby off of your back. It can also be helpful for stretching out tight hamstrings.

Place your hands on a wall, shoulder width apart and walk back until you feel a comfortable stretch (making an upside down L shape with your body). Allow the body to soften as you feel the stretch through your back and down your hamstrings. Stay for 5 – 10 breaths. When you are ready, keep the knees bent as you walk back towards the wall slowly.

You can bend the knees and lengthen the tail bone back. Try swaying the hips from side to side to release tension in the pelvis.

If it feels uncomfortable place your hands a little higher up for a gentler stretch, and be sure to keep a bend in the knees.

Second Trimester Fashion Tips: How to Dress a Baby Bump

The secret is finally out… Baby is coming! Your second trimester is the time to settle in and start enjoying your pregnancy & flaunting your changing figure!

Every pregnancy is different, but it’s often at this stage that the bump will really start to show. Here are our top 5 tips for dressing a baby bump in the second trimester…

1) That’s a Wrap

This trimester you may go from barely showing at the start to beautifully blooming by week 27, so now is the perfect time to invest in maternity clothes designed to grow with you.

Wrap maternity dresses are perfect for this! A second-trimester mamma’s secret weapon, they’re comfy, stylish, ultra-versatile, and the clever wrap ties let you adjust the fit as you grow.

2) Let’s Talk Bras…

If you haven’t already, now is the perfect time to invest in maternity bras – the sooner you make the switch the better. All of our bras offer a super flexible fit and easy access for nursing.

With the right support you’ll look and feel like a new woman!

3) The Perfect Pair of Jeans

With your newly budding bump, a comfy pair of maternity jeans is sure to be high up on your shopping list.

If you like a little extra support & cover, opt for a comfy over the bump style. Or for a pair that looks just like your pre-pregnancy jeans, under bump is the way to go.

Browse our denim collection online for skinny, slim leg, boyfriend fit, organic options and more in a great selection of colours!

4) Always Overalls

We don’t know about you, but we can’t think of anything cuter or more comfortable than a great pair of overalls – and they work so well with a second trimester bump!

Our essential denim overalls feature several size settings at the sides, so you can adjust the fit as you need to.

5) Flaunt that Blossoming Bump!

Styling in the second trimester is all about emphasising the empire waist. It’s your slimmest point right now, so highlighting it will flatter your figure & show off your beautiful bump to its best advantage. Afterall, now’s the time you want people to know it’s a baby in there… not a cheese burger!

Our double layer maternity & nursing dresses are perfect for this – the topper in a different fabric provides the perfect contrast to show off the bump.

Maternity Fashion Tips from Harper’s Bazaar Arabia’s Editor in Chief

It’s not every day you get to pick the brains of one of the most influential fashionistas in the Middle East. So when Seraphine founder Cecile Reinaud met the Editor in Chief of Harper’s Bazaar Arabia, Louise Nichol, she took the opportunity to sit down and quiz her on her approach to maternity fashion.

Alongside her duties as Editor in Chief of one of the most glamorous glossy magazines around, Louise is mama to 4 year old Leo and 1 year old Fox, and is expecting baby number 3 – a boy! – in the autumn. In May she attended the launch of our new flagship maternity store in Dubai’s famous Festival City Mall, and was thrilled with what she saw, saying:

“The store looks incredible – I love the Seraphine brand, so it’s wonderful to have you here in Dubai!”

Pamper Days at Home: Seraphine’s 10 Steps to Ultimate Relaxation!

During pregnancy you deserve to be pampered. And while a weekend at the spa isn’t always on the cards, at home pamper days are the perfect little luxury for an indulgent Sunday afternoon. So clear your schedule, relax, de-stress & unwind with our 10 steps to the ultimate at home spa day!

1) Set the mood – Before you begin, take some time to unwind & prepare your space. First, turn off your phone – nothing can compromise your Zen today! Next, slip into a soft pair of maternity pyjamas & brew a pot of your favourite herbal tea. Then dim the lights, put on a soothing playlist, light some candles & let the perfect at home pamper day begin.

2) Facial steam – Open up your pores & hydrate your skin with a relaxing herbal steam. Combine calming lavender, toning geranium oil & antioxidant green tea in a large bowl with warm water. Then sit with your face over the bowl & cover your head with a towel to create a sweet scented steam tent. Relax & allow the steam to work its magic for up to 10 minutes.

P.S. If you decide to create your own combinations of herbs, tea and essential oils – make sure to stick to the pregnancy-safe options, & always stop if you start to feel over-heated!

3) Exfoliate – Treat your skin from top to toe with a luxury exfoliating scrub. This will remove dead skin & impurities, leaving you with radiantly glowing fresh skin. Use a scrub from your bathroom cupboard, or whip up a home made batch combining sea salt, olive oil, lemon & lavender. Get the recipe here. Then rinse off in the shower & wet your hair.

Maternity nightwear

4) Hair mask – Smooth on a hydrating hair mask, then wrap up and secure your hair in a soft towel or old silk scarf and allow it to soak in. We love these DIY recipes from Hairspray & High Heels!

5) Soak in the bath – Lie back & indulge in a relaxing bath while you let your hair mask set. After all that exfoliation, your skin will be perfectly primed to absorb all the lovely things you can throw at it. Try adding 2 cups of full fat milk & half a cup of pure honey for a softening soak worthy of the queen of Egypt.

6) Rinse off – When you’re finished in the bath, rinse off the hair mask in the shower, and use a clarifying shampoo to prevent any product build-up. Once you’ve dried off, take a few minutes to massage your bump with bio oil, or any other anti-stretch mark product you like to use (if your partner is around, this could be a good job for him!)

7) Face mask – Slip back into your robe & apply a soothing face mask. You can find some fantastic DIY options at Wellness Mama, or check out the video above from Promise Phan for a miracle turmeric mask – and don’t forget the cucumber slices for your eyes!

8) Foot wrap – While the face mask sets, apply your favourite foot moisturising cream liberally, then wrap them up in cling film with a hot towel on top for 10 – 15 minutes. You can make a hot towel by getting a hand towel wet, wringing it out & microwaving it for 1 minute.

 9) Mani Pedi – Rinse off the facemask & remove the foot wrap to reveal your beautiful soft feet. Time to paint your nails!

10) Treat – Slip into a pair of soft maternity pjs, stretch out on the sofa & indulge in a girly chick flick & chocolate while your nails dry.

Nursing Bras & Maternity Bras: Busting the Myths Wide Open

We want to talk about bras… Specifically, maternity bras & nursing bras. Bra buying can be a challenge at the best of times; add to that the drastic fluctuations in size and the extra features you’ll need for pregnancy and nursing, and you’ve got quite an underclothing conundrum on your hands. This week on the blog we are ironing out the issues and busting the myths wide open. Mamas: Welcome to Seraphine’s Ultimate Guide to Maternity & Nursing Bras!

Maternity & Nursing Bras: The Basics

First off let’s get one thing straight: your bra is not just there to look pretty. It has a very important job to do – keeping you and your bust fully secure and supported. During pregnancy this job becomes even more vital; as the added weight of your growing bust can put pressure on the delicate ligaments at the top of your chest, causing them to stretch. So we think it’s fair to say that your maternity and nursing bras are a pretty important underwear purchase!

Pregnant woman wears a Seraphine maternity bra & robe

When fitting your bra, the recommendation is that:

80% of the weight of your breasts should be supported entirely by the under-bust, and only 20% should be carried by the straps.

Seraphine maternity and nursing bras are made with super supportive elastic instead of underwire. This helps you to keep your shape and makes for a healthier, more comfortable option.

Buying Maternity Bras

nursing bras basics

When to Buy a Maternity Bra

Generally, your cup size will grow over the first 20 or so weeks of pregnancy. Your rib cage will start to expand after that from 20 weeks onwards.

We suggest switching to a maternity bra at some point in your second trimester. Your cup size should be fairly stable by then, and all of our maternity bras are made with extra hook and eye settings at the back to allow a flexible fit to accommodate your expanding rib cage.

Fitting Your Maternity Bra

As a general rule of thumb: Take your usual pre-pregnancy bra size, and then go 1 cup size up and 1 back size up. So if you usually wear a 34C, you’ll want to try a 36D.

When trying on your maternity bra, make sure that you feel comfortably secure on the tightest setting, giving yourself plenty of room to adjust the fit as you grow.

Buying Nursing Bras

buying maternity bras

When to buy a Nursing Bra

When your milk comes in for breastfeeding you may find that you’re busting out of your bras again, so it’s a good idea to buy new nursing bras a couple of weeks before your due date. That way you’ll be prepared when baby arrives, and will have a good idea of the size you’ll need.

If you continue with breastfeeding, you may find that once you’ve established a feeding routine and your body is basically back to normal, you’ll need a smaller size. All of our maternity bras feature nursing capabilities, so at this point, you can switch back to using the maternity bras you bought in your second trimester!

Watch John Lewis’ tips for choosing your nursing bra

Fitting your Nursing Bra

Take your pregnancy bra size, and then go 1 cup size up and 1 back size down. So if you are wearing a 36D near the end of your pregnancy, you should opt for a 34DD for nursing.

When you try on your nursing bra towards the end of your pregnancy, it should feel comfortably secure on the loosest setting so that you can tighten it up over time as your body settles back to normal.

Looking After Your Maternity Lingerie

Remember: not all bras are machine washable!

To avoid disaster, always read the instructions on the label and if in doubt:

  • Hand wash with cold water
  • If you choose to machine wash, hook the bra together and use a wash bag, setting it to a delicate cycle.
  • Dry your bra in the shade to avoid sun damage and do not tumble dry

Nursing Clothes Shopping List

Nursing clothes must-haves

If you plan to breastfeed, it’s a good idea to have plenty of nursing clothes ready a couple of weeks before your due date. Nobody wants a situation where daddy gets sent out on an emergency clothes shopping trip – least of all him! So what will you actually need aside from nursing bras:

We know there’s a lot to take in here, but we hope you’ve found it helpful. For more info, make sure to check out our Maternity & Nursing Bra Advice online.

The Cointreau Awards: Super Models, Signature Cocktails & Seraphine

The venue: Liberty of London. The guest list: VIP. The signature drink: Cointreau fizz – what else!

Always keen to encourage aspiring entrepreneurs, Seraphine founder Cecile Reinaud joined a glamorous crowd this week at the Cointreau Awards for creativity and innovation.

Cecile spent time chatting with British super model and winner of the ‘true icon award’ Lily Cole, who loved Seraphine maternity clothes while she was expecting her daughter Wylde, and revealed to Cecile that she now can’t get enough of our nursing clothes.

The judging panel offered a seriously stylish line-up. Breath-taking French super model Laeticia Casta, who has been the face of innumerable fashion houses – Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Jean-Paul Gaultier to name but a few, took her seat on the panel. While the inspirational Guila-Clara Kessous, a French human rights artist and UNESCO artist for peace, looked stunning in our Emerald Silk Maternity Evening Dress.

Much like Seraphine, The Cointreau Awards fused French chic and British innovation, taking the best bits from both sides of the channel and wrapping them up in one glamorous package. The awards celebrate entrepreneurial individuals who dream big and dare to create, and everything about the fabulous event reflected these ideals.

Pregnancy Glow: Beauty Tips for Radiant Skin, Glossy Hair and a Gleaming Smile

Glow like a goddess through your pregnancy with these simple hints and tips for radiant skin, glossy hair and gleaming white teeth! We’ve all heard of that radiant pregnancy glow that appears during your nine months… the one that will have friends and family commenting on how fantastic you look. So why not give your natural glow a little boost with these simple pregnancy-safe tips:

Radiant Skin

Shop our gorgeous designer changing bags today!

There are no shock revelations or secret shortcuts here (well maybe just one….). The best way to ensure radiant skin fit for a goddess, is to lead an equally saintly lifestyle. That means drinking plenty of water and eating good anti-oxidant rich foods like grapefruit, watermelon and broccoli to flush out toxins.

When it comes to your skincare routine, every goddess is different, so all we can really advise is that you find a regime that works for you and stick to it. You may find that your skin becomes more sensitive during pregnancy, so it’s probably best to steer clear of heavy duty products, opting for the gentler ones instead.

Quick Fix

If your pregnancy glow is in need of an instant radiance boost, try sucking on an ice cube! This will boost circulation to your face and provide an instantly plumper, rosier complexion. Works like a charm!

Glossy Hair

For glossy, goddess-worthy locks, it’s all about keeping things cool. It’s no secret that heat is damaging to your hair, so a quick cool rinse at the end of a shower, or finishing off your blow dry with the cool shot setting on your hair dryer could make the world of difference!

Top Tip

Did you know that different hair colours behave differently? Lighter hair is more porous, and will be more prone to build-up, so blondes are at their glossiest when their hair is freshly washed. Whereas those with darker hair are at their best with well-conditioned second-day hair! Learn how your hair behaves and you’ll be able to wash wisely for your next big party.

Gleaming Smile

Aside from the obvious (brush twice a day and don’t forget to floss), a great way of keeping your teeth pearly white is to eat plenty of crunchy fruit and veg like apples, celery, broccoli and carrots. Sounds like some crunchy crudités and hummus is in order!

Let Your Pregnancy Glow Sparkle & Shine

Of course once you’ve achieved your goddess-like pregnancy glow, there’s no better way to show it off than in some stunning new maternity clothes! Choose the styles that make you feel like the most shiny and fabulous version of yourself. Whether that means rocking a Grecian style maternity dress, strutting your stuff in the perfect pair of maternity jeans, or pulling out all the stops in a glamorous LUXE maternity evening gown!

Look after your pregnancy glow & have fun with fashion this season mamas!
